Not Alone

In the Car

He sighed in relaxation as the silence filled the air. He turned the wheel and the car turned left, following the wheel's command. It was just how he imagined it to be, peaceful. The sky was dark and the surroundings was quiet. It was past midnight and the people were asleep. There were no cars that would loudly honk because the people inside were in a hurry. There were no people carelessy crossing the streets, not even looking out for cars that might bump into them. It was just him  under the dark sky with the car that his memebers bought him.

"You've always wanted to drive your own car right, Kangjun? Well now you're legal and you just got your driver's license!" he recalled their leader, Barom, say to him when they gave him the car. He have always wanted to drive his own car when he became legal. He wanted to ride it alone in the middle of the night. It was his dream ever since he was in middle school. He decided to postpone that dream when he debuted, thinking that he should focus on topping the charts instead of driving a car. He didn't expect that he would be doing this.

He turned the wheel and the car followed. He was driving for four straight hours. he wasn't even close to getting bored. He stopped the car in front of a convenience store and got down. He didn't recieve the stares he usually got when it was morning since there wasn't a lot of people in the convenience store. He came in the store and took a bottle of coke. He went to the cashier and waited behind a dark haired girl. He stared at the girl's hair. The girl had a very very dark hair which isn't really common. The people he usually saw had black hair, but not as black as the girl's hair.

"Ah!" he heard the girl suddenly whimper. It was just then when he realized that the girl was carrying a lot of things. His instincts kicked in and he grabbed some of the things the girl was carrying.

"I'll carry that for you" he said with a cheeky smile. The girl looked at Kangjun in surprise. Her eyes were wide and Kangjun couldn't help but think it was cute. When the girl realized what Kangjun was doing, she gave him a small smile and mumbled "thank you", with her eyes returning to its normal size. Although she wasn't surprised anymore, her eyes were still big. She didn't look korean, to Kangjun.

"Where are you from?" Kangjun asked, trying to start a conversation. He stared at the girl anticipating her response, but the girl was quiet and Kangjun had almost given up in starting a conversation.

"Seoul, I think." he heard the girl mumble. Kangjun became a little surprised at the girl's sudden answer. The girl was not ignoring him after after all. She was thinking.

Kangjun chuckled at her answer which made the girl curious to why he was laughing.

"Why are you laughing?" she asked. Kangjun looked at the girl and gave her a smile. Her eyebrows met and she had a confused look planted on her face.

"Of course you live in Seoul. We're in Seoul right now." he explained. The girl gave him a weird look and shook her head when she got what he meant. She looked forward and placed the things she was about to buy on the counter, when she realized that it was her turn to pay. Kangjun followed her and placed what he was holding down.i

"Where do you live in Seoul, I meant?" he asked, when he finished putting everything on the counter. He faced the girl and waited for her answer.

The girl thought for a while and faced him before speaking.

"I don't know the exact address but it's a few blocks from here." she said with an unsure look. Kangjun nodded, understanding that the girl wasn't familiar with the streets of Seoul and was probably new.

"That would be 25,000 won" the guy in the counter said. Kangjun's  eyes widened at the guy's statement. The girl really bought a lot.

"You bought a lot." Kangjun pointed out. The girl laughed and opened her wallet. She took the needed money and gave it to the guy at the counter. She looked at Kangjun and laughed when she saw that he had a weird look on his face. Kangjun was really surprised at the amount the girl had to pay and the amount of food she bought.

"Don't overreact. I won't eat these alone. I lost a game with my friends and I had to go buy them food." she explained. Kangjun nodded in understanding.

"Bummer" he mumbled and laughed. He knew what it was like to lose a game and be asked to buy food for the whole group. They, C-Clown, did it  a lot of times. There were a few times that he lost and the other members would ask him to buy tons of food. He didn't know that girls also do those type of games.

"I'll leave first then. Thank you for helping me out." he came back to reality when he heard the girl say. He looked in front of him and saw the girl wasn't there anymore. He looked around and saw the girl was already at the convenience store's door.

"Wait!" he called and ran to the door. He was about to come out when he heard the guy at the counter say "Wait! You haven't paid yet!". He stopped walking and glanced at the drink in his hands. He hissed and went back to the counter to pay. Oh how he wanted to leave the drink behind and run after the girl. He didn't want to say goodbye yet. He liked talking to her.

He paid the guy and took his drink. Kangjun ran out and tried to look for the girl but didn't find her. He sighed and walked to his car. He opened the door and came inside. He started the engine and looked around, in case the girl came back, before driving. He couldn't stop thinking about the girl he just met. He didn't really got to know her. He didn't even got to know her name, but he felt like she was different.

His thoughts got cut when a certain female, from a far caught his attention. She was holding two bags on her right and two on her left hand. She was wearing a white sweatshirt and shorts, just like the girl he met. Kangjun quickened the pace of the car and caught up with the girl. He slowed down when he was near the girl and lowered his car's window.

"Need a ride?" he asked, startling the girl. The girl looked at him with wide eyes. He was correct. She was the girl he was with a few minutes ago.

When the girl realized that it was Kangjun, she laughed and stopped walking. Kangjun stopped the car and opened the passenger's seat beside him, expecting the girl to come in. The girl smiled and close the door, without getting in which made Kangjun a little bit confused.

"No thanks. I don't want to burden you. My apartment is not that far to walk." she said and was about to continue walking until Kangjun spoke.

"It's not a bother. Come on." Kangjun said. The girl looked at him with an unsure look while Kangjun just gave her an innocent look, trying to tell her that he won't harm her. She sighed and opened the door before hopping in the car. A satisfied smile appeared on Kangjun's face as the girl closed the door. His smile became bigger as he started driving with the girl beside him.

"So where are you really from? You don't look like you're from here." Kangjun started. He saw the girl nod and look at him.

"I'm from another country. I came here to study as an exchange student." she explained. Kangjun nodded in understanding and continued to drive. In his head, he felt happy. He was right, she wasn't from korea.

"So what do you do?" the girl asked as she took a soda from one of the bags. She offered it to Kangjun but Kangjun shook his head and showed the girl the coke he just bought. The girl nodded and drank her soda while waiting for him ro answer. Kangjun thought for a while. Was he really going to tell this girl that he was a singer? Wouldn't she get nervous or something. She might even start using him to become popular.

"I'm a singer." he decided to just say it, and if she ever did use him he would deal with it. He glanced at the girl and waited for her reaction but she just nodded and closed her drink

"Oh. We're here" the girl suddenly said.

"I live at that apartment." she said while pointing to a building nearby. She started to arrange the bags until Kangjun drove past the apartment.

         "Wait you--"

"Don't you like talking to me?" Kangjun asked with a cheeky smile. The girl looked dumbfounded for a while. She couldn't help but just laugh and nod at Kangjun. She dropped her bags on the car's carpet and relaxed in her seat. Kangjun on the other was happy. He really didn't want to say goodbye to the girl yet. Not even close.

"So are we just going to drive around the city?" the girl asked which made Kangjun chuckle.

"No. We're gonna talk too." he said. The girl chuckled and slapped Kangjun's shoulder which made Kangjun jokingly yell "I'm driving!", making both of them laugh.

When both of them finally calmed down, Kangjun started to talk.

"I'm Jun by the way. You can call me Kangjun" he introduced and held out his right hand, with his left hand on the steering wheel. The girl smiled and shook his hand before introducing herself.

"My name is Ari. Nice to meet you Mr. KangJun."

Kangjun gave her a smile in return and they both looked away from each other as their hands separated. They were quiet, for a few minutes. It wasn't an awkward silence, but a comfortable one.

"So you're a singer..." Ari started. Kangjun nodded at her statement and turned the steering wheel. He took their album from the compartment and inserted the CD on the CD player. He went to a specific number before pressing play.

         We couldn’t say anything
And just thought about the forthcoming breakup
         We knew but couldn’t say
         And grew farther apart
Just the two of us, in the car

Ari listened as Kangjun sang along the song. He kept on singing and he would look at her at times. It was like he was singing the song to her, but they weren't a couple that was breaking up. They weren't even a couple. They were strangers to one another. Although she couldn't help but smile. Kangjun really had a beautiful voice.

For hours, they talked while Kangjun drove. Ari would laugh when Kangjun said something funny and so did Kangjun. They talked about each others life and experiences, their hobbies, likes and dislikes. Kangjun felt good talking to her. He felt normal. He didn't feel the pressure of being an idol.

The sun was about to set and both of them decided to head home.

Kangjun stopped the car in front of Ari's apartment before leaving the car and running to the passenger seat's side and opening the door. Ari took the bags and got off the car. They didn't say anything and just looked at each other, for a while. Neither of them wanted to leave and neither of them wanted to say goodbye, but they had to since Kangjun had a schedule and Ari had school to attend to.

"Thank you." Ari broke the silence. She gave him a sweet smile which Kangjun returned. She was about to walk to the apartment until Kangjun stopped her.

"Will we able to talk again?" he asked. Ari looked at him and laughed before going closer to him. She looked at him with big eyes and a small smile which Kangjun thought was really charming.

"Will you let fate decide that?" she asked back. Kangjun was lost for words. He didn't know how to answer her, and he was apparently too lost in her eyes. Kangjun didn't want to think that fate wouldn't let them see each other again and he also didn't want to risk not being able to talk or see her again because he trusted in 'fate'. But in the end he decided that fate told him not to trust him.

"I think fate is telling me to ask your number." Kangjun said and smiled cheekily before handing out his phone. Ari laughed at him and shook her head before taking his phone and entering her number.

Ari gave his phone back and Kangjun looked at it as if it was the greatest thing he ever held.

"Good Night then." Ari said and walked to the door of the apartment as Kangjun watched her. She stopped by the door which made Kangjun a little curious.

"I'm happy you got my number." she said still facing the door. She looked back to Kangjun and stuck her tongue out.

"You'll be dead when I get so many questions from my friends on why I got home late." she said which made Kangjun chuckle. Kangjun nodded to her which she returned with a smile. She went inside the apartment and Kangjun's smile widened.

He walked to his car with the smile stuck on his face. He was happy in his decision. He felt like it was the best decision he ever made after he decided to be an idol.

He came in the driver seat and stared at the steering wheel, still haven't got over the girl he just met. He suddenly hugged the steering wheel the big smile on his face.

         "Thank You car!"
