Vampires. Nocturnal creatures who translocates themselves as bats, burns in the sun and needs to drink human’s blond to survive.
Well, things changed over centuries a bit.

The ability of transformation into a bat have vampires from the very bottom of vampire’s hierarchy. Having only need of blood all the time they can at least hide from others stares after their feast. These get to their old age as quick as humans.
Going higher in hierarchy, the blood in their veins is purer of course, but you can meet huge variety of powers, gifts and special abilities.

Vampires won’t that easily burn in the sun. It’s not their enemy anymore. Only simple sunrise or sunset is powerful enough to leave burning marks on their pale skin. But nobody knows how it is with weaker individuals. No one want to check the symptoms in fear of its own life.

Besides vampires, there are also werewolves, demons, witches, spirits, shadows, wizards, angels and many other good and evil monsters. Earth is just place between. Between each of world where everyone can meet and live next door.

In each society being non-gifted is a bad sign. Without particular abilities creature is useless and even a bother, because others need to take care of it. Luckily, situations like that are very rare and usually clan is kind enough to take responsibility. However, society doesn’t need weak individuals, so normally powerless persons would be killed in their young age.

Being orphan is not welcome either. In these societies clans and ranks counts a lot and orphans fall just right next to those humans changed into bat-vampires.

Government keeps its hand on pulse, especially on the base of their society. Because what is going on in there has the most effect on the rest of the outside world.
If an orphan is special enough government can shove its hand to help each other. Otherwise, weakness has to disappear.

But.. What about being non-gifted, first from good family, next an orphan?
Well, it’s difficult, but possible. At some points…
