Foreword

This was just about the worst idea my father could have ever had. A family camping trip to promote unity amongst them? The idea was laughable. I, Jang Geunsuk, do not need to sleep outside in a flimsy piece of propped up fabric to grow closer to my family. No, I could very easily do that at home, in my bed, warm and happy. But instead I am out here, grumpy and wishing death upon my father. I repeat, this is the worst idea my father could have ever had.

I glanced up to tell him so, only to find that I had lost my parents. Apparently, while I was looking down at my footing I had either taken a wrong turn or they had gotten too far ahead of me. The forest around me was dense, the trees were packed closely together and it was hard to see far ahead. I knew there was a camp site in the forest somewhere, where the trees were cleared so that families could sleep there. But, I had no idea where exactly that was.

"Dad? Mom?" I called out, continuing to move forward in hopes that they were not very far ahead. But I received no reply to my yells. Maybe I had strayed in the wrong direction. This worried me, but I had to hope it was not true. So, I chose to continue forward. Eventually I'd either reach the campground or the edge of the forest. And either one would not be that bad.

As I trekked on I became very aware of two things. One, that I had most definitely gone in the wrong direction. And two, that this forest was much, much larger than I had anticipated originally. And as I picked my way through the thick trees, the faint roar of water reached my ears. A waterfall perhaps? As I moved closer I grew more and more assured of my original assessment. The quick rush of water and the deafening crashing assured me, even before I could see it, that I was in fact, going towards a waterfall.

As the tree opened up to revealed the majestic body of water, I was amazed by the beauty of nature. It was so rare to experience nature at all in Seoul, and to think that something like this was only a little ways away from the city was astounding to me. I had never appreciated the elegance that nature possessed until this moment.

And then I saw her. She was strange, that was my first thought. She was skinny yet muscular, her body was toned well. She wore nothing but a bathing suit that featured her small waist and lean legs well. She was lightly tanned and her hair was untamed. It was wavy and long, as if it was rarely ever cut or looked after. She wore no makeup but she had no need. Her eyes were a deep brown and evenly spaced from her nose. Her nose was short and fairly flat but not very broad. Her lips were thin and were tinted a faint pink color and when she smiled she revealed a straight set of teeth.

To me, she was both very beautiful, and quite repulsive. Physically, she was attractive. But she was unkempt and wild and I was reminded of an animal. Majestic, but crude.
