Nearly dead. Barely breathing. Needing fifty machines with long names just to keep him in his coma-like state. 

It was all because of that truck, going fifty miles over the speed limit, that swerved on to the pavement, taking away all the spirit from Key's body. 

All Key can do is sit and watch his mother weep over his slowly dying self, knowing that soon he'll be gone forever, because she can't see what is essentially his soul, waiting there with her. Key knows there's no hope of him waking up. He's trapped in a hospital for eternity. 

Luckily, a hospital is where many people die, so he has the opportunity to meet new people and make new friends.
