The other side

Description

Do you believe in the afterlife? Jonghyun didn't. Now he get's to learn for himself.

Foreword

Life was good, SHINee's new album had been accepted with open arms, even if their new style had received both positive and negative response.

They were all growing up and their new look for Lucifer showed it, they looked like men now, not just boys with a good taste in fashion.

"I can't believe your hair!" Jonghyun doted as they left the salon, running a hand through his own now dark locks for the first time since Ring Ding Dong. He was still getting used to it, no matter how long he had it now, every little touch up brought it back to him. He wasn't blonde any more.

Key flipped his new hair with a small blush on his cheeks, he knew it was extreme, but it was unique and he knew he could pull it off, with his personality he could have pulled off a bald head if he needed too. Though he needed to keep on top of it more than he liked he still loved it.

If there was one thing Key liked, it was to stand out, show off, it's half the reason why he had learned so many dances. So he could show off and be noticed.

Jonghyun laughed good naturedly at his friend and shoved a woollen hat over his hair to hide the new look before their comeback, chucking a cap at Key as they crossed the road.
"It looks good" he laughed, knowing that Key would be nervous about it until the public saw his new hair.

They hadn't had their comeback stage yet, and until then they were given explicit instruction to remain covered. All the recent performances were even performed in hats. Even if their new video and album showed off their new style.

They were so caught up in their new look that they hadn't seen the car as it sped through the lights, zooming down the almost deserted road before it collided into them.

Jonghyun didn't know what had happened, he felt like he was flying through the air, his body hurtling away from where he had been standing, his world spinning around him so quickly that he felt ill.

He clenched his eyes shut, terrified of the sensation that had hit him so suddenly.
It wasn't until a hot white flash ran through him that he could open his eyes again, his body feeling still again.

The sight threw him off balance slightly, everything was wrong, it was all upside down, like he was standing in the sky and looking up at the ground.

This can't be right... he thought to himself and looked at his feet, confirming that he was indeed standing on absolutely nothing.

Jonghyun stumbled back, as if moving would reveal it all to be a trick of the light, but as his body hurtled up in falling Jonghyun realised he would much rather be standing on nothing, than falling through it.

At that thought he hit solid air again, his feet firmly in place.

He didn't know what was going on, did he fall asleep in the salon? Was this all just some strange dream.

Looking up at the would above him he decided to go find out.

Testing his footing he took one step, finding that no matter where he stepped he could walk, like he had an invisible staircase that would lead him wherever he wanted. Even if gravity seemed to be working incorrectly as it were.

Swallowing the questions that rose in his throat he walked closer and closer to the world above him, his eyes immediately being drawn to flashing lights, and the ambulances they belonged too.

His footsteps quickened when he recognised the road outside of their salon. A sinking feeling rushing through him as the whole picture became clear to him.

Above him he spotted himself first, paramedics surrounding him, sticking him with needles, compressing his chest, breathing into him. Frantically he searched for the man that had been with him, would he be worried? Crying? Eventually he spotted him, and he didn't look conscious, let alone upset.

Jonghyun's world flipped again, causing him to become slightly disorientated as his feet hit solid ground, everything now the right way up again.

He could see how his own body was damaged, crumpled and bent in unnatural angles and no matter how the paramedics moved him his body looked broken.

If he was here, and also there, did that mean he was dead? If that was the case then it was already too late for himself, but he didn't see or hear another Key.

He rushed to his friends side, easily stepping through the emergency workers without even as much as a bat of an eyelash.

The sight of Key was strange, he looked in better shape than his own body did, but he didn't look quite like the carefree pop star he did moments before.

Jonghyun felt like he could cry, but he didn't even know if he could if he was dead so he settled on dropping to his knees, body passing through another man as he fell.

"You can't be dead Key, you can't" Jonghyun whispered, grabbing for the man's hand and practically jumping out of his skin when he actually touched him instead of passing through him.

If he could breathe, right now it would have felt like all the oxygen left him as his fingers held Key's, lifting the performer out of his body as he brought the hand to his chest.

"Key? Are you there?" Jonghyun asked, with no response from the body or the soul he was holding on to.

With a determination to help Key, Jonghyun stood, and pulled hard at the soul he was touching, taking him completely away from the body on the street.

"J-Jonghyun?" Key sputtered when his eyes opened, not sure what was going on as his world span into view.

"What are you- are you standing in that man?" Key blinked down at where Jonghyun's leg was going right through the paramedic working on Key's body.
Though the question of Jonghyun's non-corporeal form was quickly lost when his eyes alighted on his body "I-is that me?"

All Jonghyun could do was nod, he knew what Key must've felt, he was feeling it himself. The feeling of confusion, loss, and unwilling acceptance that you were in fact dead.

"We've got no pulse!" One of the paramedics yelled, compressing Key's chest to try and start his heart again.

It was something neither of them could look away from, no matter how hard they tried they wouldn't have been able. Watching with a morbid sense of fascination as they tried to revive Key.

Key's body jolted as the defibrillator was pressed to his chest, electricity running through him.

Every time the machine was pressed to the body, Key's soul would flicker, like a television in a storm.

"What's happening to me?" Key let go of Jonghyun to look down at his hands, watching as his hands flickered in and out of existence before flickering out of view entirely.

"Key!?" Jonghyun was panicking, where did Key go? His soul couldn't die too could it?

He frantically searched, looking around for him until he heard the paramedics, they had gotten Key's heart started again, he wasn't dead.

He turned to look at his own body, they were still working on him, but he didn't flicker when the machine surged electricity through his body, he didn't feel it at all, all he could do was watch and cringe as his lifeless body shook with each jolt.

"He's breathing!" one of them yelled, the lot of them strapping the bodies to stretchers.

He was alive? Then why was he still here?
