Track 1 - Spring

Take My Hand And Fly

Way up in the universe, the axis of the Earth had begun its inclination towards the burning Star, warming up a hemisphere of the globe of lives. The once breathtakingly anaemic landscape of chalky snow had gradually blossomed into vibrant hues of green and pink. Frozen streams swelled with runoff as Spring finally descended, granting the moment of growth and renewal, unveiling the many new chapters of lives.

Jang Hyunseung, an aspiring 26 year old graduate was finally about to embark on his long awaited journey as a civil servant, determined to dedicate his life to the field of education. He was ready to embrace his passion to teach, to guide and facilitate the minds of the society’s future successors. He was high spirited, ecstatic, and beyond nervous as he felt the heaven of reindeers and golden bells dashing and ringing through the snow right under his poor ribcage. Hyunseung loved Christmas, and he thought Rudolph was endearing. But right now, it wasn’t helping that he was feeling the cold and the hasty thumps against his chest.

“That’s quite an impressive bit of poetic bull I’ve ever read.” Doojoon chuckled with mock-cringe, dropping the stack of resume on his desk after skimming through the first paragraph of his companion’s goosebumps-inducing philosophy.

“Doo, I’m so nervous,” the newcomer confessed, conveniently ignoring the former’s typical kind of remark.

Doojoon pushed himself away from his office desk as he moved to stand before the younger man, who looked like he was about to pass out anytime. He stepped closer and tugged gently on both sides of Hyunseung’s collar, giving him a reassuring smile, “I’m really looking forward working with you. You’ll do great Seung.”

That spring morning, Jang Hyunseung was introduced as the new Literature teacher to thousands of young possibilities that he was about to make a difference to. He rehearsed and rehearsed an umpteenth time for his introductory speech, as Doojoon had warned him that his reputation in the school relied heavily on his first impression, and if he wanted to survive in this hell of teenage realm, he’d better not screw up. And as a Virgo, a perfectionist in many ways, Hyunseung worked hard practicing his merely 30 seconds speech infront of the mirror everynight. As Doojoon watched him spoke in perfect charismatic demeanour on stage, he couldn’t help but recite along with those dreadfully-familiar words. Inner Doojoon did a double flip and punches of “HOLY YES. THANK YOU JESUS MY LORD!” right after the speech ended. The young Head Of All Departments was partly glad that Hyunseung had pulled it off flawlessly, but mostly because he was more than relieved and over the moon for not having to hear the doe eye man chanting the same line over and over again like a new age mantra every single night.

There was an uproar of applause right after Hyunseung did a bow, and Doojoon could already spot some senior boys and girls ogling at his soon to be co-worker. Doojoon shook his head disapprovingly. Though clearly unintentional, but enthralling teenagers who were in their peak hormone phase was the last thing Doojoon wanted for this passionate teacher to land into. But whoever could resist the doe eye man? Not even his other co-workers, let alone a bunch of deluded hormone driven teenage boys and girls who just loved fantasizing themselves as the victims of a love triangle between their favourite teachers. That was part of high school life, Doojoon couldn’t really blame them.

Three months after teaching the seniors in Anglo High, Hyunseung was assigned as the home room teacher for one of the classes due to the former teacher having to go for maternity leave. He felt highly appraised to be assigned to the senior department, as it wasn’t a custom for new teachers to take on graduating classes. Nonetheless, Hyunseung , being the Virgo he was, gratefully accepted the challenging position, and penned down his every thoughts on how he could assist the seniors in preparation for their college entrance exams.

The doe eye man was close to the essence of a workaholic and the epitome of randomness. Doojoon groaned a hundredth time over dinner date when Hyunseung would ecstatically talked about how they should plan a short vacation to Hawaii to swim with the dolphins, and the next moment, started talking about how a field trip to the beach would benefit the holistic well-being of his stressed out students. So, Doojoon had finally had enough.

“Babe, I thought we were talking about our vacation? Remember? Your Peter Pan theory of riding on a dolphin and swimming through corals and what not?” Doojoon reminded deliberately.

Hyunseung was half way through typing watermelon in his shopping list for the field trip in his phone when he looked up and stared at Doojoon disapprovingly.

Doojoon grinned handsomely at his date, already anticipating whatever 4D remarks that would explode from those creamy pouty lips. It didn’t matter, as long as the older man had Hyunseung’s full attention, but those lips were becoming a little distracting.

“Doo,” Hyunseung started before the layer of Carbonara sauce off his lower lip, “Peter Pan doesn’t live in water. He flew around in Neverland, with Tinkerbelle and co, if you even know? Little Mermaid sounds more affiliated to the theory.”

Honestly speaking, Doojoon had absolutely no clue about fairy tales. He was never interested in those pastel, bling bling and bubbly tales which were often overdosed by the audio effect of wind chimes when some magical being appeared to unleash their awe-stricken spells. No. As a young kid, Doojoon preferred games and cartoon over books. He liked Sonic and Batman while Hyunseung liked Spongebob and Pinky and The Brain. But knowing Hyunseung was such a literature addict, he read about almost all books that one could name. Doojoon was only glad that Hyunseung’s distinct preference of literature was Realistic Fiction. Then again, all he wanted was something to grab Hyunseung’s attention back to him, and that he succeeded.

“Speaking of swimming with the dolphins, there are a couple of places that allow people to swim under natural demarcated sea area, like in Riviera Maya, and Cozumel in Mexico! I thought swimming in dolphinariums is kinda depressing. I mean, they’re supposed to be…”

Doojoon watched and listened to Hyunseung blabbering excitedly about his plan for their upcoming vacation. He enjoyed moments like this, where they discussed about things that they were to do together. Together. Just the two of us. For a life time. Till deaths do us apart. Doojoon smiled blissfully at the thought. As Hyunseung was animatedly drafting out their next year’s summer trip (yes, this year was done so the Virgo had moved on to plan for the following year), Doojoon was also planning for something. Something that he had been working towards since his eyes landed on a particular doe eye boy 20 years ago.

“Oh Doo, I was watching Nat-Geo Wild the other day, it was showing—“

“Mexico sounds like a nice place.”

Hyunseung stared, obviously not liking the idea of being cut off when he was talking, but at the moment, he was more puzzled than offended.

Doojoon smiled fondly while reaching for Hyunseung’s hand that was resting on the dinner table. “Hyunseung-ah, we’ll go Mexico next year.”

Hyunseung tilted his head slightly and watched the man in front of him who was suddenly adorning a brilliant smile on his perfect face. He had always thought that Doojoon was perfect. Flawless chiselled features, charming personality, capable, loaded, annoyingly smart and the list could go one and on. Sometimes, the teacher grimaced at the fact that he did think very highly of this outrageously defectless childhood companion, not that he would ever tell him his true feeling, which would only skyrocket the elder’s already grandiose ego.

Doojoon held his gaze on those mesmerizing orbs, the pair of eyes that swept him off his feet countless times. He deliberately brushed his thumb over the significant silver band which had been securely wrapped around the younger’s finger since a month ago. The elder watched the doe eyes widened a little, as Hyunseung bit down on his lips lightly, only to break into a tender smile which was almost bashful. The beautiful man nodded along with a quiet ‘hm’, locking eyes with the man serenading him as he spoke almost inaudibly.

“Mexico is perfect, Doojoon-ah.”
