Jonghyun

World of Secrets

Donghae followed Hyukjae for a good ways, staying a few steps behind him until he realized that this was not something that a normal teenager would do.

“Where are we going?” He asked running to close the gap between him and Hyukjae.

“You will see, just stay close.” Hyukjae said and quickened his pace.

Donghae had no problem keeping up with Hyukjae’s pace, his long legs easily kept up with him. They walked a long way through the city, winding up and down streets. Donghae had no idea where he was anymore. Hyukjae seemed to be following a distinct path though, and Donghae had no choice but to follow him. Eventually they reached a tall building in what seemed like a business district. Hyukjae entered it and Donghae followed. They ignored the front desk and headed straight past the secretary to a set of elevators. Hyukjae pushed the button for one and when it came the entered it. He pushed the button for the top floor, 15 floors up.

The elevator ride seemed to take forever for Donghae. They didn’t utter a word to each other, but simply stared straight ahead. Donghae kept trying to steal glances at the boy beside him. He fidgeted, trying to appear nervous. He figured some random kid off the streets wouldn’t be comfortable in a situation like this. Finally the elevator came to a halt and the doors opened. Hyukjae led the way out, past another secretary’s desk and then to a door that Donghae would not have seen if Hyukjae hadn’t walked straight towards it.

Hyukjae put his eye up to a scanner, which read it and the door opened. Donghae followed him into a stairwell, he expected it to go down since they were already on the top floor, but it only went up. Hyukjae began to climb and Donghae followed. After a few flights the stairs ended at another door with a scanner, which Hyukjae again opened with his eye. Walking through the door they were greeted by a bright light shining through the all glass room.

Donghae looked around him in amazement. They were on the very top of the building in a room that was clearly off limits to anyone except those who were invited inside. The entire thing was made of glass that was tinted so that you could see out, but nobody could see in. The spacious room included a large mahogany desk that sat in the middle, facing the door from which they entered. He saw a man sitting in the chair behind it facing the window, his back towards them. Beside him Hyukjae cleared his throat.

“Sir, I’ve brought you Kim Kibum as you requested.” Hyukjae said in a clear, strong voice. It was entirely different from the voice he had spoken to him with earlier, which had been softer and friendlier.

“Very good Hyukjae, take a seat.” The man in the chair said without turning around and Hyukjae obeyed immediately, taking a seat in one of the large, comfortable looking chairs that Donghae hadn’t noticed before.

“Well Kim Kibum, welcome. I am Jonghyun, but you already knew that.” Jonghyun said, spinning around in his chair to face Donghae.

Donghae immediately recognized him from school; his face was plastered everywhere. He was the enemy, and he was so close. He was entirely defenseless aside from the small boy sitting on the chair next to Donghae. Donghae felt the need to strike, but he resisted, remembering that his mission was not to take out Jonghyun, but to get close to him. It was easier to strike the closer you were.

“Welcome to the business. I take it you know why you are here?” Jonghyun said; the last sentence more of a question than a statement.

Truth was, Donghae didn’t have a clue why Kibum had been chosen for this assignment out of all the teenagers in North Korea.

“Honestly, sir, I don’t.” Donghae admitted, his face staying strong though, showing no sign of embarrassment.

“Ah, he has no shame, wonderful. You are here Kibum, because we need a new kind of thinker. You see, we must predict our enemy’s moves before they make them. Our enemy is South Korea, and they are just your average, governmentally funded army. They don’t think outside the box. Here we have trained children from birth to be our, spies, so to speak. They think outside the box, and lately their predictions…have been off.” Jonghyun began speaking and shot a look at Hyukjae who snorted.

Donghae observed this exchange and found it odd for someone as young as Hyukjae to disrespect someone as powerful as Jonghyun. Donghae had to admit, he found what Jonghyun said slightly amusing. If he only knew what kind of force South Korea had. At least he now knew something important: Jonghyun had a force similar to that of the Lee Company and he didn’t have a clue that the Lee Company even existed.

“We need somebody who is, average, but above average at the same time. We have been watching you for a while now Kibum, and you are perfect for the job. Your parents have passed recently, correct? A car accident I believe?” Jonghyun asked of Donghae. Donghae recalled the profile he had studied so intently.

“Neh.” Donghae replied, recalling that this information was indeed correct.

“So you have no one to watch over you. You are only seventeen, far too young to be left to fend for yourself. We are taking you in, teaching you new things that you would never have learned in the outside world. In return you will serve us loyally. You will analyze enemy movements, trying to predict where they will strike next. I feel that this war has gone long enough; it is a time that we put an end to it. I feel the end is very near, and we must be prepared. If we lose we are completely at the mercy of South Korea, and that will not end well.” Jonghyun finished explaining.

Donghae couldn’t help but agree with that last statement. If the Lee Company did manage to take down Jonghyun, he wasn’t sure what his father planned to do about North Korea, but he knew it wouldn’t be good.

“So, where do I begin?” Donghae asked and Jonghyun smiled at the response he got.

“First things first. Hyukjae, search him.”  Jonghyun commanded and the boy rose from his seat and took a stride towards Donghae.

Donghae spread his legs and lifted up his arms. Hyukjae ran his hands along Donghae’s arms, then down his sides and legs, then back up his legs again. Donghae tried hard not to react as the nimble hands came dangerously close to his private area.

“He’s clean.” Hyukjae said and stood up, not bothering to take a seat again.

“Very good, now check his bag.” Jonghyun instructed, not missing the back pack that sat on the ground next to Donghae.

Donghae was right about getting rid of the laptop and food. When Hyukjae opened it he only found the spare set of clothes and a few odd items. He reported what he found to Jonghyun who simply nodded and turned to face out the window again.

“Very good. Hyukjae, gather your friends, you have a journey to make. You will be taking Kibum here up to The Mountain where you will then fill him in on everything we know.” Jonghyun instructed without turning around.

“Alright, sir.” Hyukjae said and started to head back towards the door from which they entered, but a voice stopped him.

“Hyukjae, you will not take the underground train. Use the tunnel to leave the city, and then take Kibum here on a little hike. We must test his strength and resilience.” Jonghyun instructed and Hyukjae simply nodded, which Jonghyun clearly did not see but seemed to acknowledge none the less.

With that the two boys made their way back down the stairs towards the elevator. They entered the elevator in silence, neither saying a word.

Donghae had so many questions he wanted to ask. What was The Mountain was the first, following that was all the questions about the boy that was called Lee Hyukjae.

He was fascinated by him. He was also extremely confused by the strangely familiar relationship he seemed to have with Jonghyun.

“My name is Lee Hyukjae, I am 18 years old and I and my four friends make up Jonghyun’s most prized group of spies. You will be joining us now, making six. The Mountain is our operation headquarters, so to speak. It is where most of the operational analysis occurs. Normally we commute there by an underground train, but it is also accessible by a three day hike if necessary. We will be going on foot.” Hyukjae explained, though he didn’t seem too thrilled about this last part.

“Why are you so unhappy about having to go on foot?” Donghae asked, curious as to the reason behind his resistance.

“It is so much easier to go by the train. The hike is also dangerous, and in this weather it is more perilous. You have to deal with the constant cold and lack of sleep. Our enemies could also be out there, hiding, waiting for us to let our guard down. The next three days will probably be the worst of your life.” Hyukjae concluded, but Donghae highly doubted that.

He couldn’t tell him that this little hike was nothing compared to the wilderness training that every student went through in the Lee Company. They had to spend a month in the woods in the middle of winter. They couldn’t build a fire as it could give away their position. Not only did they have to survive, they had to perform various missions throughout the month.

The elevator stopped and Hyukjae got out when the doors opened. Donghae again followed him, but this time he followed him towards the back of the building where another elevator was found. Hyukjae used his eye to open the elevator and they got in. This time they went down at an alarmingly fast rate instead of up at the usual speed. They kept going down, Donghae thought they would never reach the bottom when finally the door opened and revealed the core of an underground labyrinth.

Donghae looked around the room in amazement. There were special suits filling every corner, and all of them seemed to have different capabilities. In the center of the room was what appeared to be packs of camping supplies, all ready to go. He saw rows upon rows of guns, and off in the distance he heard shots being fired. It was probably a shooting range.

“Stop gawking and go change into this.” Hyukjae instructed handing him a suit that looked like the disguise suit he already had on.

“What does it do?” Donghae couldn’t help but ask, curious as to what powers the article of clothing had that his suit didn’t.

“It’s just an outdoors suit. It is water proof and will keep you warm no matter what the temperature is outside. It may seem flimsy and useless, but it isn’t.” Hyukjae explained and then shoved him towards the door to a small room.

So it didn’t have any powers that his disguise suit didn’t. Donghae quickly pulled the new suit over his disguise suit and then put his street clothes back on.

“Grab a pack.” Hyukjae instructed as Donghae came out of the room.

Donghae saw that Hyukjae was wearing nothing but a suit similar to the one he had just handed him. He took in the sight of the slender boy in the tight suit. It clung to his skin perfectly, showing of his subtle, yet muscular physique.

“You’re going to want to take those off. They will just get wet and heavy in the snow. Don’t worry about shoes either; the suit won’t let any water in.” Hyukjae said with a glance at Donghae.

He looked down at his street clothes and felt a blush creep into his face as he slowly ed the shirt and took it off in front of Hyukjae. He had nothing to hide since he had the suit on underneath, but it was still uncomfortable for him to strip in front of a stranger.

Once he had removed his clothes and discarded them with his own pack that had been thrown to the side, he replaced his worthless bag with a back pack full of camping supplies.

“This way.” Hyukjae called once Donghae was finally ready.

Donghae followed Hyukjae down one of the tunnels that lead off from the giant store room. They walked for some time, the tunnel growing darker as they progressed. Donghae his night vision so he would still be able to see.

“How do you see in the dark like this?” Donghae asked Hyukjae, wondering what his secret could be to overcoming the blindness.

“You get used to it, I can see just fine. Can you?” Hyukjae asked and Donghae saw that he threw him a worried glance.

Not wanting to give away the fact that he had an eye screen with night vision Donghae had no choice but to lie.

“No, I can’t see a thing.” Donghae bluffed perfectly.

“Take my hand; it gets a little rough up ahead.” Hyukjae said and took a hold of Donghae’s hand.

Donghae felt himself blush at the physical contact. He hadn’t held hands with someone since he was a little boy, he didn’t even touch his friends like this. It appeared so casual for Hyukjae though, so he let it go. Maybe normal teenage boys held hands with their friends all the time, he didn’t know.

The continued to walk in silence, still holding each other’s hands until finally Donghae saw a light up ahead. Hyukjae let go of his hand as they approached and the light had gotten bright enough for Donghae to see naturally.

“Hey, it took you guys long enough!” A small boy with short, shaggy brown hair called out.

“Geez Yesung, give it a rest. He can’t see in the dark like we can.” Hyukjae told the boy and Donghae made a mental note of his name.

“Oh great, this is going to be one long trip then isn’t it?” A taller boy with big, brown eyes asked.

“Yes, Kyuhyun, yes it is.” Yesung answered the boy.

“Kibum, this is Yesung, Kyuhyun, Heechul, and Kangin. Guys, this is Kim Kibum, our new groupie.” Hyukjae said with a teasing smile while pointing to each of his friends.

Yesung looked like he wanted to eat you, while Kyuhyun had a kind, innocent face. The boy named Heechul looked like a girl, especially with his long, flowing hair. Kangin was a bigger man compared to his friends, obviously very muscular underneath the tight suit.

“Well, shall we get going before night falls and we have to stop because this one over here can’t see in the dark?” Heechul suddenly whined and Donghae could tell right away that the feminine man had a whiny, princess like personality that matched his appearance.

“Alright Heechul, no whining.” Kangin said smacking the smaller man upside the head.

Donghae laughed inside at the act. They reminded him so much of his own friends. The thought made him slightly homesick, but he couldn’t let his emotions take over him now. He needed to focus. He had to learn about these boys, especially since Hyukjae said that the group was Jonghyun’s most prized group of spies. These five could be the key to the Lee Company’s success in taking down Jonghyun.

Chapter 16: That was a fun ride. I like the story. Though it will be even greater if there’s more action but I guess it’s better this way with a little bloodshed. As Donghae said, like a domino effect we need to take the first one to cancel all the effect.
