She skipped down the hill,

Path long-ago abandoned

"A turn here,

Cross the narrow river

Down the hill to the meadow..." she sang.

The girl swung around the willow tree,

Blithe and brightly smiling but,

that single lace-bound shoe twisted in roots enchanted and vines possessed.

And down she fell.

Day had passed and she had not returned to her love.

Night had fallen and stars afloat in the black ocean

He left with a single oil lamp.

He ran own the hill,

Path long-ago abandoned.

Maddened by her absence and frantic but,

And down he fell.

"If there's no one behind you when your soul embarks, then

I will follow you into the dark..." the wind sang.

The woods gave way,

And dark parted as the willow tree was brought to life by flames.
