Foreword
They were near.
I could sense it. I could feel their cold presence freezing the blood in my veins and turning my stomach to rot. My troubled breaths came out in a shaky wince as I clutched my side and pressed on.
The wind against my body, the loud thudding flap of wings, the shriek of the dark ones behind me. I moved faster through the night, towards the glistening flicker of city lights ahead of me. If I could only reach the light.
But they were near, so near.
Now I could even smell their stench like rotting flesh and decay.
Not sparing the time to look back, I pushed my body to its limits – long past the point of excruciating pain – to fly even faster. I winced at the strain on myself. Muscles ached, limbs became numb from the loss of blood trickling down my side; but forward I went. Giving up was not an option. Giving in to the dark, handing myself over to become a lost soul . . . I couldn’t. I wouldn’t.
My mind started to drift, and as it did this, my body slowed down. I was so close to the city lights, so close.
But everything ached and without realizing it, I started to descend. Plummeting down through the clouds until . . . The impact against the rooftop was enough to kill any normal person.
