Foreword
“Good morning!”
You greeted your step-mother happily from your seat at the table. She ignored you and took her seat next to your father. Your smile wavered for a moment but you turned to smile at your father instead. He returned your smile.
Breakfast was served and a nice silence took over the room. You liked it better this way. Towards the end, you decided to ask your father what the plan for today was. Instead, your step-mother spoke up before you could.
“Your father and I are going to Jeju for the week. We’re leaving at noon. Make sure not to cause any trouble while we are gone.”
You just stared at her. How could they leave? Didn’t they know what today was? Your father just excused himself from the table and returned to their bedroom. When it was just you and your mother, she spoke again.
“Just because you’re a year older doesn’t mean there needs to be a celebration. Just keep to your studies and wait until you’re married. We’ll celebrate then.”
You bit your lower lip to keep from responding. Satisfied, your step-mother left the table.
You finished your breakfast alone.
