Strangers

Just A Holiday Romance

Scuffed, grey, ankle high boots...Tight, black, faux leather pants...A studded belt that was visible only because his too long t-shirt was caught in the top of his pants on one side. Collar bones protruding beneath his milky white skin...The face of an angel, half hidden beneath a long, blonde fringe...JongHyun decided that this kid was not dressed to hiking.
He didn't look like he wanted to be there, his clothes, the way he stood, the expression on his face...JongHyun observed it all, completely forgetting that he'd just slipped off a fallen tree trunk right in front of this gorgeous, unknown teenager. JongHyun realised he'd been staring too long when the boy in front of him gave an irritated sigh and looked away.
Using the trunk he'd fallen off of, JongHyun pulled himself out of the mud and got unsteadily to his feet. Turning to regard him again, the blonde male cocked an eyebrow, observing the thick green brown sludge that clung to the other's clothes. He decided in that instant that the idiot in front of him was lucky he hadn't fallen off face first.
"JongHyun?" A mature woman's voice called through the trees. The two boys stared at each other for a moment longer before JongHyun looked around. His mother appeared from behind the trees that lined the hiking track and he gave her a sheepish grin. "Look at you!" She scolded with a smile. "Your father's found somewhere to stop for lunch, the view's wonderful." JongHyun nodded and carefully climbed over the tree. "We'll brush the dirt off when it's dry." She added.
Following her closely, JongHyun glanced over his shoulder at the blonde kid, watching as he dug quite a heavy stick into the mud the opposite side of the tree trunk and used it to steady himself as he climbed over. Smirking, JongHyun shook his head and turned his attention to where he was going. His mother took a not so obvious fork in the path and after a few minutes of fighting through thick brambles, they burst out onto a large flat rock.
JongHyun stopped instantly to admire the view. It was beautiful. Soft white clouds drifted aimlessly across the vivid blue sky, clouds that grew thicker towards the horizon, hazing out the tops of the trees furthest from them. The shadows from the clouds gave the trees a greater variety of colours. Most of the trees in the valley were evergreen but the few deciduous trees dotted here and there cast tones of red and gold into the mix.
"Wow..." JongHyun murmured, blinking against the sunlight as he took in the scenery. "Dad!" The elder man looked around at being called. "Where's the camera?" Sliding his backpack off his shoulders, JongHyun left it resting against one of a dozen moderately sized rocks dotted around the plateau and took the camera from his father. "Stand together!"
His mother discarded her backpack and went to embrace her husband as JongHyun fiddled with the camera. Bringing it to his face, he stared at the tiny screen intently, grasping the camera body tightly to make sure it was steady when he took the photo. He didn't even need to ask his parents to smile, they looked so happy whenever they went on holiday like this...
JongHyun sighed sadly, took the photo, and several more to accompany it. He squished himself between his parents and held the camera out in front of him, awkwardly angling the device so he could press the shutter. His parents leant in closer and all three of them smiled brightly as JongHyun took the photo, quickly turning the camera over to inspect the selca.
His parents decided they weren't interested in how the photo looked and settled down to unpack lunch. Satisfied he didn't look too goofy, JongHyun put the camera back in his father's bag and kicked his shoes off. "Let's stay here for a couple of hours." He suggested, untying his boot laces against a rock and dropping them off his feet.
"I got the spares out for you, you can change now and we'll leave the ones you're wearing out flat in the sun." His mother called as she handed her husband a Tupperware box filled with a delicious smelling curry. With no one but his family anywhere in sight, JongHyun didn't hesitate to shuck his pants, laying the cotton garment out flat, mud side up, to dry in the sun.
Sitting beside his mother in just his boxers, JongHyun peeled his socks off and left them to dry alongside his pants. He knew his mother wouldn't let him eat if he didn't put the spare pants on so quickly donned the garment and took the tub she offered him, bowing his head as thanks. Tucking into the curry, JongHyun let out a satisfied sigh, he was going to miss his mother's cooking.
She smiled at him as he glanced up, his eyes travelled past her and settled on the trees that hid the path back to the lodges. JongHyun got the feeling that they were being watched, he stared into the foliage, looking for any signs of life. His mother must have realised he was looking past her and glanced over her shoulder. "What is it?" She asked, glancing back at JongHyun.
"Nothing..." He shook his head, eyes lingering a little longer on a patch of bushes he thought he'd seen moving. "This tastes really great mum." Shoving more food into his mouth, JongHyun hoped he had successfully distracted his parents' attention from the bushes behind them.

Straightening up once he was sure he hadn't been spotted, the blonde boy stared at the teenager happily devouring the food his mother had so lovingly prepared. He knew this kid's name was JongHyun, which was more than said male knew about him. JongHyun had analysed every inch of his body from the mud and for some strange reason, he had been happy to let him look. It was odd because no one looked at him without him snapping at them...
The urge to protect himself from JongHyun never surfaced. There was something different about this boy and he wanted to know what. He looked extraordinarily average. Wild brown hair that was swept back to reveal his forehead, thick but well kept eyebrows and dark, shimmering eyes. His nose was broad and flat, lips well formed but dry...In need of moisture...He blushed a little at his own thoughts and shook them clear from his head.
JongHyun couldn't shake the feeling he was being watched. Unable to concentrate on his lunch, JongHyun clipped the lid back onto the pot and grabbed his shoes. "I'll finish it later mum. I'm gonna go check out the area." He barely saw her nod as he got to his feet and disappeared into the trees.
He reached the fork in the path and stopped. Branches cracked beneath light feet as someone came up the path behind him. JongHyun had a feeling it wasn't one of his parents and no one else had been on the rock when they'd got there. Turning, JongHyun came face to face with the blonde boy.
"Are you stalking me now?" JongHyun asked, grinning broadly at the discomfort on the other's face. He turned away and JongHyun took the opportunity to study his profile. The boy's nose was a perfect curve,  protruding very little from his cheeks. He had well defined, high cheekbones, slick, pouty lips and a strong, slightly pointed chin.
In short...He was beautiful. JongHyun decided that he was very much attracted to this boy. If he wasn't male, JongHyun wouldn't have thought twice about pursuing him. "The least you can do, stalker boy..." JongHyun's smile widened a little. "Is tell me your name. Otherwise I'll be calling you stalker boy every time I see you."
"Key." The boy replied simply. JongHyun cocked an eyebrow and tilted his head a little to one side. "That's what everyone calls me anyway." His voice wasn't the soft, angelic voice JongHyun had been expecting. Key realised his surprise and rolled his eyes. "I'm an eighteen year old guy you know? I'm not gonna start talking like a five year old."
JongHyun looked away and chewed on his lip. Key didn't look a day over fifteen, yet he couldn't help but believe the younger male was eighteen given how the pitch of his voice. "I just wanted to ask if you were okay..." Key continued, snapping JongHyun out of his thoughts. "That was quite a spectacular fall."
Instead of getting embarrassed like any other person, JongHyun threw his head back and laughed. "That was nothing!" He stated once he'd recovered, wiping a tear from his eye. "I fell out of a second floor window when I was twelve. My greatest achievement to date." Key was visibly astonished at how easily he shrugged off the severity of his clumsiness.
They lapsed into another silence, JongHyun entertained his short attention span by looking around. He spotted what he thought was another path, making the fork into what would be a four way cross road. Key tilted his head nervously as JongHyun wandered down the barely beaten path. "Hey...I don't think that's a path..."
Key glanced over his shoulder before following JongHyun, he didn't want this clutz to be on his own if he got into trouble. "You don't have to follow me, I can look after myse-WHOA!" Key flinched as JongHyun's backside connected with the ground again. Gingerly stepping over a low lying branch, Key squatted beside him, saying nothing. "Okay...I think my has suffered enough today."
JongHyun realised how dirty his choice of words sounded when Key blushed furiously. He grinned and grabbed the blonde's shoulders, overbalancing him and making him fall onto his knees. Their faces ended up way too close for comfort but Key could do nothing but stare  in shock. "You shouldn't blush like that..." JongHyun murmured, eyes drifting down to Key's lips. "Especially when you're so physically close to another guy..."
Their closeness obviously didn't bother JongHyun in the slightest. Any straight guy would have applied a hefty blow to the jaw. Key realised the longer they stayed so close, the more obvious it would be that neither of them were heteroual. Instead of pulling back, getting to his feet and walking away like his brain was telling him to, Key found himself closing the distance between his and JongHyun's lips.
Smiling softly as Key's lips brushed lightly against his own, JongHyun reached forward and brushed the soft blonde strands out of the younger's face, tucking them behind his ear. "You've never done this before, have you?" He asked gently, sensing the hesitation in Key's movements. "Kiss another guy, I mean." He clarified, not wanting Key to misunderstand.
The blush crept up Key's face, he looked away in embarrassment. JongHyun couldn't help but nuzzle into his neck, kissing the skin lightly. "That was my first kiss..." Key replied quietly, staring at the ground as JongHyun pulled back. "I knew I was different when I was 14 or 15...all the guys in my school were bragging about their girlfriends and I was more interested in art and dancing."
JongHyun settled back to listen, Key seemed like he just needed someone to listen to him. "I had always dressed 'uniquely', as my mother put it. The kids started teasing me, calling me gay and all these things..." He trailed off and tugged absently at some blades of grass that just happened to be growing where his hand had come to rest in the mud.
It was a typical story. JongHyun had met many gay men that had been ridiculed at school. His own experience had been enough to put him off living altogether. Key didn't need to know that though. "I guess I'm just looking for a holiday romance...No strings attached sort of thing..."
"Running into me must've been a of luck in your eyes." JongHyun piped up, making Key raise his eyes. "It's not everyday another gay guy will fall off a tree right in front of you." Key cracked a smile, the first one JongHyun had seen him wear. It suited him, a hell of a lot more than the sorrowful look he'd constantly had plastered on his face since they'd met. "How long are you staying here?"
Key met his eyes for the first time in a while and held his gaze. "I go home on the 14th." JongHyun nodded and patted his thighs, signalling he wanted Key to sit on his lap. Chewing his lip nervously, Key manoeuvred himself from the mud and snuggled into JongHyun's chest. "Won't it be awkward...? Knowing that we'll probably never see each other again after then?"
"Never mind that." JongHyun dismissed the question without giving it a second's thought. "Until the 14th, you are my boyfriend and I'm going to show you the time of your life."
