sorry late, this was your request via facebook. ;) You requested on how I did the white thingy/shadow behind their pictures, here. So here's the tutorial.

General Instruction:
1. Open a new canvas.
2. Open your (extracted) picture. Drag it on your new canvas.
3. Add a new layer. Make sure your layer is under your image.
IF YOU WANT THE SHADOW USING POLYGONAL LASSO TOOL...
A. On your new layer, go to your PS tool and select the Polygonal Lasso Tool.
B. Make a selection path, using Polygonal Lasso Tool.
C. Once you're done, close the path.
D. Still with the new layer, fill it by using the PAINT BUCKET TOOL. The suggested color is white, but still it's up to you.
The output should be:
IF YOU WANT THE SHADOW USING MAGIC WAND TOOL.
A. On the image layer, select the whole canvas, press (ctrl+ A)
B. Right click and choose SELECT INVERSE.
C. Using your MOVE TOOL, move the selection to either left or right. (Again, it's up to you.)
D. Go to the new layer, fill it by using the PAINT BUCKET TOOL with any color you want.
The output should be:
