Humpty Dumpty
Der Märchenclub
Chapter 4
[Humpty Dumpty]
(special thanks for the beta by: Yocaterpillar)
Once upon a time, Jung Jessica’s life was crushed.
It happened when she was seven years old –when she saw her bleeding parents, her dying parents, her lying parents….
“Mother, Father… don’t leave me, don’t leave me!”
A blood-covered hand caressed her cheek, a red stain was left on her porcelain skin. “We won’t, Darling… We won’t…”
Death made someone a liar.
Her smile was frozen. Time healed some people, like what it did to Krystal. But the only thing time did to Jessica was to freeze her heart.
The Ice Princess.
“Are you alright?”
She slowly looked up and was soon greeted with a concerned face. Familiar face, where had she seenit before?
When she was a child…no, also much later… that night…tonight?
“Donghae,” Jessica muttered slowly.
A relieved sigh escaped his lips. “Here, wipe your tears,” he said as he offered her a pack of tissues.
Jessica did not even realize that her face was drenched in tears. Her eye liner made black blots on her skin, she must have looked hideous. How she looked made her rather insecure, but she knew that there was a more crucial matter she had to address. For instance, finding out the reason why she was sitting on a bed in a room that seemingly resembled a hospital room.
“What…?” she weakly inquired.
“The doctor said that you had a minor shock,” Donghae started his explanation. “After we heard you scream, we saw you lying on the floor and brought you here.”
“Lying on the floor?” she repeated in a haze, still not completely grasping the whole concept.
Marble floor drenched in blood…
Jessica’s eyes widened again as the memories mercilessly infiltrated her mind. Jumping off the bed spontaneously, she bombarded Donghae with panicked stutters. “T-that man! Someone fell from the balcony! T-that Kangin guy and he –“
“It’s a miracle Kangin Hyung is still alive. In a comatose, unfortunately,” informed Donghae. “There is severe bleeding in his head, and he still hasn’t gained consciousness. His bones are fractured everywhere but at least, he is still alive. Though I should tell him not to drink too much liqueur next time, after he wakes up.”
Jessica’s eyes only stared back at the white hospital room. “Liqueur?”
“He was drunk enough to fall off from the balcony. That surely was a serious case of drunkenness. We wouldn’t want that kind of accident to happen again.”
“…Accident?” Jessica questioned softly to herself. And like a of lightning, the faint nursery rhyme flowed in a fine melody inside her mind.
Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall…
Jessica blinked. “I wasn’t the only one to witness Kangin’s fall, was I?”
“No, actually some of the Club’s members and one servant also witnessed that accident, but you were the closest in distance to him. Why?”
“Who else witnessed that scene?”
“I did,” a new feminine voice resonated from the hospital’s door as a young woman stepped into the room. She was still graced in a fine pink velvet gown. The exquisiteness of such a dress made Jessica conclude the girl was one of the members of Der Märchenclub that she had not bothered to remember earlier.
Her wavy, chestnut-brown hair swayed gently as she walked towards Jessica’s bed. The newcomer had a very pretty, doll-like face (that made Jessica wonder why she had not remembered her before) and innocent-looking doe eyes. She had a nice, girl-next-door vibe and Jessica concluded that this girl would probably be uncomfortable around her.
It was not that she hated the girl-next-door type, but this type of girls usually crawled away from her.
The doll-like girl, however, only approached her. She dragged one of the hospital’s chair, sat on it, and took off her high heels.
“These shoes are seriously killing me,” she casually commented as she grinned sheepishly to Jessica.
Jessica frowned.
