The next day, Hyukjae finally understood why Donghae is so excited to go despite being there for innumerable times already. They were on the way to the cove Donghae wanted to go to, and had already passed by several coves. And truly, they were very very beautiful.
They’re in a small boat with two other men operating the boat, and many supplies Donghae has brought. There's food, gasoline, medicine, and many other stuff that Donghae said he’s giving to the people in the cove. Hyukjae has come to realize that Donghae’s beauty is a reflection of how kind and generous he is inside.
“We’re here now, Hyuk. Look!” Donghae exclaimed as he looked back at him, wavy hair swaying in the wind.
And yes, it was truly a picturesque sight. A cove with white sand, pine trees at the far end, and majestic mountains in the background.
(Hyukjae's view as they neared the cove)
When they anchored, Donghae, along with the two boatmen, carried all the heavy stuff towards the beach. They seem unaffected by the waves at all, being used to it. Meanwhile, Hyukjae was tasked to just carry his and Donghae’s bags.
It took them around half an hour to unload everything and carry them towards the small store at the entrance of the fenced area that turned out to be a campsite.
Hyukjae gulped in nervousness. He looked around and saw tents pitched in the sand as well as in the more solid areas underneath the trees. Don’t get him wrong, he likes the idea of camping. He even has a tent in his room at the dorm. But he’s not sure if he can rough it out like this. Some of the campers are cooking in portable stoves and some in charcoal and set up from tree branches. He looked around and saw a communal bathroom with many stalls, and he’s definitely sure that there is no electricity here. He’s also sure that there’s no pillow or sleeping bag or portable stove or any cooking ware in the things that Donghae brought.
Donghae seemed to sense his uneasiness and looked at him. “Don’t worry, we won’t sleep here.”
Hyukjae forced a smile and nodded, unsure of what Donghae’s plan is, but can’t ask about it because they’re still busy arranging the supplies Donghae brought.
One of the locals there can speak English and told him that they’re always thankful for Donghae’s help, and that even when Donghae was younger, he used to teach the kids there to read and write and shared his books.
My perfect Donghae…
When they were almost done, an elderly man in his eighties suddenly arrived and greeted them. He hugged Donghae familiarly and Donghae introduced him to the man he called “lolo” which he said means grandfather. The grandfather smiled warmly at Hyukjae and hugged him as well, and then continued talking to Donghae as he led them to a house at the end of the campsite. He didn’t understand what they were talking about, but he obediently helped Donghae carry the boxes that seem to be especially for this old man.
They entered the cozy house and grandfather offered them drinks but from what Hyukjae interprets, Donghae insisted on making them instead. He seemed to be familiar with the house and went to the other room, presumably the kitchen.
Hyukjae was left with grandfather who tried talking to him in broken English.
“Aiden. You. Happy together. Okay?” The grandfather said while gesturing with his two index fingers together.
Hyukjae nodded good-naturedly despite being unsure what the old man actually meant.
“You. Aiden not hurt. Okay?” The grandfather said again while shaking his hands and then pointing at his heart.
Hyukjae cocked his head to the side.
Did he mean not to hurt Donghae?
Just then Donghae stormed to the small living room and whined to the grandfather who was chuckling at the blushing Donghae.
Hyukjae can’t help but chuckle as well even if they were talking in a different language, and Donghae sent him a non-threatening glare.
After they finished their drinks, Donghae stood up and said it was time to go. Both of them hugged the old man and proceeded to leave, now with just their two bags, a water container, another bag, and a cooler.
Finally being just the two of them, Hyukjae started questioning Donghae. He’d been curious for hours now. “So, were you always here as well?”
“This is the most frequent destination for the tourists since it’s a beautiful cove with a lake and not the farthest. So whenever I went as a boatman when I was a teenager, I became friends with the few people who actually live here.”
“And you bring them these supplies for free? The way I interpret their reactions, they’re happy to see you and are used to you giving these things.”
“As you can see, there’s no signal or electricity here. Tourists go here to unwind and disconnect from the world, but the people here are always disconnected. They get income from the people who pay to be in this cove and from selling whatever they can sell. So whenever I visit, I bring some things for them that can reduce the things they need to buy from the mainland which costs them a lot.”
“You’re really such a kind soul, Donghae. You nev
