That moment.

Description

What if instead of Dong-min, Eun-ho takes care of Dan-i when she is giving birth to her daughter Jae-hui.

------------

This story is set almost ten years before the events of the drama.

Foreword

Cha Eun-ho loved his work. He loved writing and editing even. Juggling his work and studies kept him busy and didn’t give him time to think about Dan-i or Mr. Kang.

Which was good.

Except sometimes his work frustrated the hell out of him. Like today, for instance, he has a massive hangover. And the worst part, today is Saturday, he was supposed to sleep off his hangover, but instead he got a call early in the morning about how one of their books had the wrong author’s bio. On top of that, their company was new so they couldn’t afford a contract cancellation from one of their few authors, so he had to drive to the printing shop so that he could help his business partners in applying stickers on the wrong author's bio. The worst part? There were at least 5,000 copies of the book.

Now, here he was in the midst of a pile of books around him with his other four business partners.

He sighed loudly for the fifth time in the last hour.

“What’s wrong?” Mr. Bong asked him on behalf of all of them.

“Nothing.” He replied flatly before yawning and massaging his forehead.

The lights were just too bright for him to focus really, and till now he didn’t get any sticker right in the first try.

“Are you hungover?” Mr. kim asked and when Eun-ho deadpanned at him he cracked a smile.

“Did you have to much fun at the club last night?” Mr. Bong teased.

Eun-ho just gave them a tight smile while the women of the group looked at him in amusement thinking that of course, since he is young, he will do these things.

But little did all of them know the real reason behind him getting so drunk last night. Yes, he was at a club. But the girl he was with reminded him so much of Dan-i. He couldn’t take it, so he simply had one drink too many and gave the taxi driver Dan-i’s address. That was the first time he showed up like this at Dan-i’s house after she got married. Of course, he knew he can’t meet her like this now. But he missed her so much. He wondered how she was doing, then he heard her laughter followed by Dong-min’s. At that moment he realized that he will never be able to move on from her.

Now that he is here at the print shop with his colleagues and a hangover, he regrets letting go of Dan-i. At that moment his phone rang.

What a coincidence! He thought sarcastically as Dan-i’s name appeared on the caller id.

He sighed yet again, before declining her call.

Now is not the time, Dan-i.

But his phone rang again and before he could decline it and put his phone on silent Mr. Kim decided to cut in.

“Pick it up. It must be something important.”

Eun-ho looked up at him for a second before sniffing and walking away from his colleagues to take the call. He half expected Dan-i to exchange greetings and talk about her day or ask him about his recent trip abroad.

What he didn’t expect was Dan-i hyperventilating and saying some incoherent words.

Before he could ask her, she cut him,

“Eun-ho, come to my house quickly, I need you to take me to the hospital.” She panicked on the phone.

Eun-ho stood straight in alert and worry, “But what happn—”

“My water just broke!” she almost shouted and grunted at the same time as if in pain.

“WHAT?” Eun-ho shouted in surprise before covering his mouth, realizing where he was. Then in a low voice asked into the phone, “Are you okay?”

“Of course, I am not okay you Brat.” She sounded a little relaxed now, “I need you to take me to the hospital.”

“Who? Me? Where is Dong-min?”

“On a business trip. Come fast Eun-ho. Because if I give birth on this kitchen floor then I will kill you!” Again, she shouted in the phone making Eun-ho jump.

“But—” Before he could say anything, Dan-i cut the call.

He sighed again before turning around to see his colleagues staring up at him.

“Mr Kim.” He hesitated, “I have to get my sis—uhh….”

She is not my sister; you don’t fall in love with your sister.

“Mr. Kim, it is a family emergency.” He tried again, “I have to go now, sorry to leave early.” He quickly turned and walked towards the exit, ignoring what Mr. Kim said and the stares his other colleagues were giving him.

The moment he stepped outside the bright sun blared at him.

Hangover and bright sunlight don’t go together.

“EUN-HO!” Dan-i shouted from where she sat on the passenger seat beside him while he drove as fast as he could, “Drive faster!” she said as she clutched at her protruding stomach and took a deep labored breath.

“I am driving as fast as I can noona, I am!”

He glanced at her from his peripheral vision. Here, she was in the middle of giving birth as sweat covered her face and her hair was all out of place. Eun-ho could feel his heart rate increase, but soon he was pushed out of his trance as Dan-i’s hand came flying at him and slammed his head into the window.

Dan-i screamed simultaneously with the screeching of the tiers of the car they were in.

“NOONA!” Eun-ho clutched the staring wheel tightly before the car went off the road.

“Drive faster, I can’t keep it in anymore!” Dan-i said tiredly as she recovered from her contraction. Eun-ho removed her hand from his face and increased his speed.

“You are not giving birth in my car!”

“I SAID DRIVE FASTER YOU PRICK!” Dan-i picked the takeaway coffee cup from the cup holder and crushed it in her hand as another contraction hit her. Eun-ho watched with wide eyes as the leftover cold coffee spilled out of the cup.

Finally, to both of there relief, they reached the hospital, Eun-ho quickly stopped the car and got out before walking to Dan-i’s side.

He helped her out of the car holding both of her hands to support her as he walked her to the hospital entrance. To anybody else it would seem sweet that a man was helping the women he loved while she was in labor pain, but not certainly to Eun-ho. Not in that moment at least, because first; Dan-i squeezed his hands so tightly that he was sure he would get bruises. Second; she was showering him with profanities and death threats as her pain increased. He shouted for a doctor before two nurses showed up and took Dan-i away.

Eun-ho was not a type of guy who would easily admit that he had dreams about living his life with Dan-i, that, if she ever reciprocated his feelings. He wanted to experience so many things with her. The daily domestic life to going on one of those foreign trips with her, he usually went to alone. But he never thought of experiencing this with her. He never thought that he would help her to the hospital while she is actually giving birth to her and Dong-min’s child, while he himself is hungover.

But now, when the nurse tells him that they had a daughter, he wanted to tell her that he is not the father, but he doesn’t. Instead, he follows her to Dan-i’s room where she rested on the bed with a little life in her arms.

A smile grows on his face.

Dan-i looks at him then, “Eun-ho look!” She says smiling widely, excitedly showing her newborn to her friend.

He stepped closer to her bed, “She looks so much like you.” He said softly first looking at the baby, then looking at Dan-i who is busy admiring her daughter.

At that moment warmth settled into his heart. And he thought that if he would get more moments like these to live in with Dan-i, albeit for a short while, he would be the luckiest man on earth.
