Red.

It was the color of roses—his favorite, by scent or by shape; the symbol of love in the color of courage, the one that had always decorated his room one way or another. It was one of the three additive colors that made everything else—red, the fiery hue that demands a full attention of the seer. It was also the color of what was taken from him in a matter of seconds—blood, the bringer of life to the living.

Red, the color of what he would see in his dreams from that moment afterwards: her eyes.

And just like that, the lines were blurred; reality or dream, he could no longer be sure. No longer, also, could he feel the sinking of sharp fangs into his veins, and while the color of her irises were imprinted deep in his consciousness, even if his eyes were open, he saw nothing.
