Other Half

Eunha felt her body freezing from her spot as she was only a few steps away from the shivering girl whom she completely fell for. She couldn’t utter any word nor move her feet to take another step, afraid that she’ll mess this one chance she has to make a good impression towards her self acclaimed soulmate

“What are you doing? Why are you only standing there?” Eunha flinched at the sudden whisper and tap on her shoulder. Yerin was looking at her with the ‘what are you doing?’ expression

“I—“ Before the smaller girl could even say anything more, she was pushed by Yerin and ended up almost spilling the hot latte she was holding. Good thing she was able to balance it or else the coffee might now be all over the girl named Sowon

Eunha was staring on the ground, embarrassed at how she stumbled in front of the girl she likes. She swears, she wanted to curse at her best friend for ruining this moment

“Is that coffee you’re holding, perhaps mine?” Sowon asked with her sweet voice and Eunha just nodded shyly, still staring on the ground

“Uhm... will you give me that or will you just gonna hold it until it turns cold?” The shorter girl widened her eyes as she realized that she haven’t given the customer’s order. Once she lifted her head, she saw the girl giving her famous smile. And that made Eunha’s face heat up and turn bright red

Watching the tall girl from afar was enough for her heart to feel like it’ll explode at any moment and the butterflies in her stomach to act up. What more now that she’s seeing up close?

“Right. Here’s you’re order, Miss Sowon” Eunha stuttered in every word she uttered and her hands were shaking as she placed the latte on top of the table. She thought ‘Great. Just great, Jung Eunha. Good job for stuttering right in front of her’

She thought that the latter would find her to be an idiot or someone weird, so she was readying herself for the cold response of the girl. But instead, she heard soft giggles coming from the tall girl

“You’re cute. You know that?” Sowon trailed off as she reads the barista’s name tag “Jung Eunha-ssi”

The latter could feel her heart skip a beat at the mention of her name. She didn’t knew that hearing someone call out your full name could become music to her ears until Sowon had said it herself

The reddening face of Eunha had now become sixty shades of red, which meant that the color of face was definitely not normal anymore.

Sowon noticed how her face’ color was changing “Are you okay?” The panic on the tall girl’s face was inevitable. Never had she seen someone’s face turn into different shades of red in just a matter of seconds. She stood up from her seat to check the younger girl’s temperature but was stopped by the sudden outburst of the girl “I’m fine! No need to worry about me”

By that time, Eunha had definitely wanted to shrink down and hide herself from the latter for she had really made such a bad impression in front of the latter. She saw how Sowon’s eyes widened and how she flinched at her sudden outburst—the truth was, she was just too embarrassed and too nervous around the girl. Specially that she would feel the customer’s hand on her skin if she hadn’t stopped

“I’m sorry, ma’am” Eunha whispered out of shame

“No need. I totally understand” The model like girl assured her with a smile “And please just address me as Sowon. No need to be too formal”

“I’m sorry, again. Ma— Sowon” Eunha repeated before bowing ninety degrees and turning around to run back to her best friend

But as she takes a few steps away from the girl, the realization that the blanket she was supposed to give towards Sowon was still on her hand. So she didn’t have any choice but to swallow hard and pray that she wouldn’t commit any mistake again

Eunha breathed in and out for a few times before finding the courage to tap the older girl’s shoulder who was busy studying the scenery outside the cafe while drinking her hot latte

“I forgot to give this to you a while ago” Eunha reached both of her arms out to give the taller girl’s blanket but the latter only titled her head and questioned her “What’s that for?”

Eunha blinked a few times before the words had finally processed in her brain “It’s because you seemed cold. Plus your outfit is drenched from the rain outside”

The latter found the way Eunha’s cheeks were turning bright red and how cute her voice sounds. As if she could hear the younger girl’s voice throughout the day. Sowon grinned and joked “I wouldn’t have to pay for that blanket. Right?”

“What?” Again with Eunha’s slow processing. She snapped out of her thoughts when she heard the latter’s soft giggles

“I was joking” Sowon stood up and grabbed the blanket from Eunha “Try loosening yourself more and who knows? You might be even cuter if you did that” The tall girl said seductively as she winked, leaving the younger girl in a daze

Eunha was still lost in her own world even after the tall girl had left the cafe. She still couldn’t get over at the ‘You might be even cuter’ statement of the girl and damn that charming wink she gave after that statement. Eunha definitely found a tiny hope that they might end up together

She doesn’t care anymore if Sowon was her soulmate or not. But all she could tell is that she’s already in love with the girl and she would do everything to win her heart. Soulmate or not.

She doesn’t care anymore if her face would turn wrinkly while her best friend’s would still stay the same, young looking and flawless face. As long as the person whom she would end up with is that girl. The model like girl named, Sowon or also known as Sophrodite

“Why are you smiling like an idiot?” Yerin flicked her best friend’s forehead who was lost in her own world. The latter covered her reddened forehead and glared at her best friend for hitting her

“What was the for?” The younger girl was rubbing her forehead and hissing out of the impact of Yerin’s strong flick

Yerin shrugged and arched up an eyebrow “You looked like someone who lost her soul yet someone who looked like a person who just won a lottery because of how huge your grin was and how your eyes were sparkling so bright” Yerin had this smirk on her face for she maybe know the reason behind that attitude of her best friend

“So tell me what exactly happened” The older girl nudged Eunha who appears to still be in pain. “Does it still hurt?” Yerin asked, concerned if she flicked her best friend that hard. Because personally, she doesn’t think she only tapped the latter

But that perspective was only for Yerin. Everybody knows and had witnessed how strong she was. So even if she thinks she only did it lightly, that would be different toward the latter’s feeling. Eunha clicked her tongue and glared at her “What do you think? You know how strong you are”

Yerin gave her apologetic look and muttered “I’m sorry, Jung”

“Yeah, yeah. Sure you are” Eunha sarcastically as she headed towards the staffs room to get her bag.

Sometimes Yerin couldn’t understand how moody her best friend can be. Just like what had happened a while ago. She was smiling like an idiot and immediately changed into a woman who grew old alone without any love life

“Don’t forget to tell me all about it and if a name appeared on your chest, when you get home” Yerin shouted as she turn the sign board of the cafe into ‘Closed’

“What? She seriously called you cute?” Yerin squealed on the other line while Eunha tried to remove her phone away her ear, but her smile still planted on her face

Remembering her conversation with Sowon this after still doesn’t fail to make her lips curve up. She remembers how husky yet sweet voice of the girl, how her smile could easily melt her, how her eyes could easily capture her whole being.

Sowon definitely has something special in her that makes her stand out from all the guys and girls Eunha had encountered in her life. The past people whom she liked couldn’t even be compared towards the tall girl

“She didn’t exactly directly called me cute. She just told me that I may be even cuter if I loo—“ Eunha was trying to clear what Sowon had told her but ended up being the one who needed some clarification from her best friend

“She didn’t tell you that you’re cute, but she said ‘you might be even cuter’ right?” Yerin wasn’t asking, she was more like saying it as a statement “The ‘cuter’ word is already enough that she finds you cute. Because she wouldn’t use the comparative word of cute if she doesn’t find you cute”

Eunha’s line was dead silent after Yerin’s statement, her face was heating up and her ears were hot. ‘Does Sowon really thinks I’m cute?’ She thought as she try to stop herself from forming a smile that could reach up to her ears

“Hey, Jung Eunha. Are you still here?” The brunette asked that made the younger girl snap out from her own world

“Yes, I’m still here” Eunha responded with her voice cracking up at her first word which turned her face into an even brighter shade of red

“What do I do with an in love Eunha?” Yerin muttered that was barely heard by the girl on the other line.

It was the very first time her best friend, Eunha, had become this whipped towards someone she barely knew. It was as if the younger girl could even beat her whipped level towards her lover, Hwang Eunbi.

The brunette let out a heavy sigh “Well, let’s leave out the chest part for tomorrow. Don’t forget to tell me if her name had been marked on your chest” Then the lined started to beep, their call have ended

Speaking of the name, Eunha immediately darted out of her bed, suddenly feeling that all her tiredness had disappeared.

She went inside the bathroom to wash herself—and to also check her chest. Her smile was from ear to ear and was humming happily as she head to the bathroom.

The first thing she did was check her chest in front of the mirror, but instead of smiling, she felt disappointed and a frown soon replaced her smile as she saw what was written on her chest

Eunha entered the cafe with a frown and a bothered expression. She wasn’t the always outgoing best friend slash barista that Yerin knew. Concerned was the very first thing that the brunette felt when she saw her best friend entering the workplace with a gloomy face

Yerin wondered if something bad had happened last night after their talk with each other. She thought thoroughly on what might make her best friend act that way. And the only thing that placed the puzzle together was the mark on her chest. Instead of assuming things on her own, she decided to confront the younger girl about what had really happened

“Why are you so down, Jung?” Yerin asked as her eyes followed Eunha who was heading towards her locker to get her uniform

“Don’t want to talk about it” Was the only thing Eunha could say before entering the changing room and closing the door. Her voice was cold and stern, unlike the usual Jung Eunha

The brunette only heaved a sigh and waited patiently for the latter to finish changing. She didn’t open the cafe yet even though it was already working hours because her best friend’s feelings is her first priority (well except her real first priority is Hwang Eunbi. Eunha comes next after her)

Eunha ignored the brunette and even walked past her. That didn’t bother Yerin, the only thing that bothered her was how down and depressed the girl looked like. Eunha’s way of walking even looked like she was a zombie, a walking dead. A walking mess

“You haven’t opened the cafe yet?” The younger girl asked in monotone, not even looking at Yerin’s direction

“Nope. I need you to tell me what exactly happened before we open the cafe”

“Nothing happened” Yerin crossed her arms in front of her chest and raised her eyebrow, not believing any words her best friend says

“Your dark circles and soulless body says otherwise, Jung Eunha” The brunette gave Eunha her serious and i’m not joking expression and that enough made the younger one growl. She knew that the older girl wouldn’t stop pestering her until she opens

“Fine” Eunha rolled her eyes and say on the stool in front of the counter “There was a name inscribed on my chest but...” she trailed off and played with her hands. The latter didn’t bother her nor cut her off because she knew that Eunha would speak up once she finds her voice

“The name written wasn’t hers” Eunha felt her eyes getting teary and her vision was getting blurry, but she immediately wiped her tears from her eyes

Yerin on the other hand was keeping quiet. She knew how much her best friend was probably disappointed after seeing another person’s name being inscribed on your chest instead of the person you were expecting to be

But Yerin knew or thought that the girl with the Sophrodite nickname might have not told her real name yet to her best friend. That maybe Sowon was also another nickname of hers. Because after all, she didn’t tell Eunha her full name or even her surname

“What was the name written?” The brunette asked as she rubbed Eunha’s back who was stopping herself from breaking down

“Kim Sojung” With Eunha saying the name written on her chest, she finally bursted and completely down into tears

Eunha looked so vulnerable at this very moment. She hadn’t seen her best friend this broken in the past. Her best friend might have cried over some guys in the past but never did she see her this down and even so fragile just because of someone. Eunha never cried unless it was something important to her.

At this very moment, she knew that her best friend saw something special towards Sowon. She needed to cheer her best friend up because it wouldn’t mean that it would be the end for her and the other girl just because they were not soulmates

Yerin didn’t open the cafe until Eunha was finally done breaking down and she tried her best to convince the younger girl that she should not stop winning the girl’s heart

“I’ve been curious, have she told you her full name yet?” Eunha looked at her eyebrows knitted together

“No. And the point is?”

“The point is. What if the Kim Sojung written on your chest was her? What if Sowon was just another nickname of hers? And even if Sowon was her real name and she’s not your soulmate, would you give her up that easily? I thought you were better than that” Yerin tried to get her best friend worked up because it was the only way that her self confidence and fighting spirit would come back. The Eunha she knows, never gives up in anything or anyone

“No. Why would I give her up? It’s you who already said it. That I’m head over heels for her” The younger girl talked with her sore voice and glared at Yerin which made the brunette smile

“I didn’t say that word you know. I said whipped. Not head over heels. So stop making your own story, Eunha” The brunette best friend, which earned her a light punch on the shoulder. And finally, Eunha’s smile showed up

“So... are you okay now or do we need to delay the opening for an hour once again?” Yerin smiled and backed away, to avoid Eunha’s punch. If ever she gets violent again

“Open it. She might come back today” Eunha weakly smiled at her best friend. She then tood up from the stool and the latter backed away (just in case her best friend punches her). But instead, Eunha excused herself so that she could fix herself at the comfort room
