J: “Taehyung, let’s have a private talk. Meet me behind the school at 2.”

That’s all Jungkook said after approaching Taehyung when he was alone in the high-school hallways one day. After that, he walked away, leaving Taehyung stunned and on the verge of freaking out for various reasons.

One was that it was the first thing Jungkook ever said to him. Taehyung knew of Jungkook, since he was quite known in school, but they had almost never interacted with each other and Taehyung couldn’t comprehend how Jungkook came to know his name. The only time they actually interacted was when Taehyung got pushed slightly while he and his classmates were fooling around as they passed through the hallway and Taehyung ended up bumping into Jungkook somewhat roughly. Taehyung said sorry and continued on his way, realizing only in hindsight that Jungkook had not said anything in reply and only kept looking at him with an expression one couldn’t precisely read.

The other reason was that the bumping-into-Jungkook incident only happened the week before and what else could Jungkook want to talk about?

The third reason why Taehyung was freaking out was Jungkook’s reputation. He was very strong, athletic and good at doing anything that involved using his body. Some girls liked to joke around by interpreting that description in not so innocent ways. He was popular with them and got confessed to and flirted with on a regular basis, but that didn’t go very well. He always refused those who approached him, subtly or straightforwardly, rudely or kindly, depending on the attitude they approached him with.

Him staying the stoic and single son of a man in the army only made some girls even more ambitions and only pissed off more guys who were prone to envy. So a lot of people started picking on Jungkook but they soon discovered just how dangerous that could be. He wasn’t an active bully, but Jungkook didn’t tolerate people messing with him, so many ended up having their arms twisted in a painful way, their asses dropped inside trashcans, dumpsters and mud puddles, their fists grabbed and held in place no matter how much they struggled to release them, and many other such things, all because they messed with Jungkook. He inevitably got involved in fights and rumors inevitably spread about how many people he managed to single-handedly beat, inevitably making him enemies that were motivated by things other than envy and making his reputation strike fear into the hearts of chill, peace-loving cowards like Taehyung.

So, when Jungkook told Taehyung to have a private talk, Taehyung inevitably assumed Jungkook intended to showcase his physical strength to Taehyung in a not very pleasant way because he was pissed about Taehyung running into him the week before.

T: “Nope!” Taehyung answered long after Jungkook had left.

When 2 o’clock came, Jungkook went behind the school and waited while Taehyung ran home faster than if he had had a horror movie character on his tail.

He was weary of Jungkook for the following days but, since they didn’t happen to cross paths, Taehyung almost completely forgot about the whole deal. That is, until one day when he was walking down the hallway and a hand on his shoulder made him turn to see Jungkook attempting to say something:

J: “You didn’t come last week. Wh…”

T: “I’M SORRY!” Taehyung shouted, taking a 90 degrees bow that took Jungkook by surprise, but not as much as Taehyung yelling “I’m really sorry, Jungkook!” did, as he split the scene with lighting speed right after he took the bow.

Jungkook couldn’t grasp what had happened at all and continued to occasionally seek out Taehyung and get an explanation while also fulfilling his original goal. However, Taehyung was now hyper-vigilant and, at the very sight of Jungkook, he hid or ran like his life depended on it, which, in his mind at least, it did.

He didn’t talk about this situation to anyone at school, anyone except Cookie. Taehyung didn’t know who Cookie was, but he knew they went to the same school. They first interacted through an online chat on an anime streaming site and eventually discovered they were from the same country. So they switched to a private chat window and later on found out that, not only were they living in the same city, they were also going to attend the same high-school. Taehyung got excited at the news and said:

TaeX2: OMG!

TaeX2: That’s so cool XD

TaeX2: I’m Taehyung

TaeX2: What’s your name?

Cookie: Not telling

TaeX2: Wha???!!

TaeX2: Why not?

Cookie: Keeping the mystery alive

Cookie: It’s more fun like that

TaeX2: But I told you my name…

Cookie: No one asked you to :)

And that was that. Taehyung didn’t get Cookie to reveal his identity, but it didn’t matter much because they could always talk about anything and have fun with it. They sometimes played online games together and, one afternoon, Cookie seemed to be very eager for that sort of activity while Taehyung was fairly reluctant.

Cookie: C’mon, Tae!!!

Cookie: Let’s play!

There was no way in this situation for Jungkook to confess that he was Cookie. Or the other way around. An online persona could say and lie about anything, so Jungkook thought it’d be best if he approached Taehyung as Jungkook and let him in on the fact that they had been talking and playing together for quite a few months so, maybe, they could try hanging out in real life as well. But that didn’t go that well for him, partially due to his reputation, partially due to his nerves that made him state his request in a way that sounded like an aggressive demand and partially due to Taehyung having a paranoid mind alongside a wild imagination.

Jungkook felt a bit sad and disheartened that his real life self had been rejected without even being given a proper chance. He gave up on approaching Taehyung for the time being, but the latter still ran whenever he saw him.

One day, as Jungkook was walking down the hallway, he saw Taehyung notice him, turn around and run behind a corner with the speed that a magician used to make something disappear. Jungkook stopped in his tracks and sighed. Then he saw Taehyung cautiously peeking from behind the corner and saying:

T: “Jungkook… When you said you wanted to talk, did that mean talking with your fists?”

J: “…No.”

T: “So you don’t wanna beat me up for bumping into you that time or any other reason…”

J: “No.”

T: “Okay.” Taehyung said, coming out from behind the corner and standing in front of Jungkook. “What did you want to talk about?”

Jungkook was surprised that Taehyung overcame his fear and approached him on his own accord, but he was still slightly bitter and there were too many people around for the kind of talk he originally had in mind, so he just said:

J: “It doesn’t matter anymore.”

Then he walked away with his eyes cast down.

For a good while after that, the incident kept eating away at Taehyung, making him unsettled enough to approach Jungkook again and ask:

T: “Hey, tell me what you wanted to talk about that time. I’m all ears. Well… a big part of me is ears.” Taehyung said, pulling the lobes of his ears to the side to showcase how big they were and maybe amuse Jungkook enough to get him talking.

However, Jungkook furrowed his eyebrows, looked to the side and just walked away after saying:

J: “I said it doesn’t matter anymore.”

It mattered to Taehyung. At first, he was just really curious as to what Jungkook wanted to talk about. Then he started feeling guilty about running away from Jungkook so often like he had the plague and assuming the worst when Jungkook probably needed something from Taehyung.

But then, after paying a lot of attention to Jungkook in order to find opportunities to go ask him again and noticing that lately Jungkook was almost always down or absentminded, Taehyung’s mind went places without him having any control over the steering wheel. The scenarios that often rattled Taehyung’s mind usually involved Jungkook being in some kind of trouble and needing Taehyung’s help specifically, which Taehyung had denied him because he assumed the worst about him for superficial reasons. Taehyung’s imagination was making him panic again and he tried to approach Jungkook on other occasions as well, but he just couldn’t catch him alone so he could bring up the subject.

To make matters worse, he couldn’t catch Cookie online to talk to him either, so he ended up leaving quite a few messages.

TaeX2: Hey, Cookie

TaeX2: Cookie, you there?

TaeX2: Coooookiiiiieeeeee

TaeX2: Heeeelllooooo! Anyone there?

TaeX2: Cookie?

TaeX2: COOKIE!

TaeX2: No? :(

Taehyung was left to his own devices and, for a while, he continued to look for an opportunity to talk to Jungkook alone. Such an opportunity did not show itself, so Taehyung got fed up and decided to create his own by suddenly grabbing Jungkook’s elbow and dragging him behind the gym.

If Taehyung wasn’t fairly known for being a coward when it came to physical confrontation, people who saw the scene would have thought he was going to challenge Jungkook and would have followed them to see the events unfolding. If Jungkook didn’t already know what intentions were behind Taehyung’s action, he would not have let himself be dragged anywhere.

If Taehyung had known that, as soon as he was face to face with Jungkook behind the gym, he would forget everything he wanted to say, he would have written himself a script to carry around. But he had no script and Taehyung remained silent for a few second until Jungkook decided to break the ice:

J: “So?”

T: “How’ve you been?”

J: “Fine.”

T: “Lie!”

J: “Doesn’t concern you if it is.”

T: “Apparently, it does concern me.”

J: “Why get concerned? What business do you have with me?”

T: “What business did you have with me in the beginning?”

J: “Like I said a hundred times by now – It’s doesn’t matter anym…”

T: “It matters to me!”

J: “Why?”

T: “Cause I acted like an , I’m sorry and I wanna make up for it, especially if it’s related in any way with you looking down lately.”

Jungkook stared at Taehyung for a few seconds, then turned his head to the side and let out a very small laugh before saying:

J: “Such a considerate guy, aren’t’ya?”

T: “Yup.” Taehyung answered cheerfully, then realized something that made him shake his head and shake his smile away as he said: “Scratch that. I’m not. If I were, we wouldn’t be here like this right now.”

J: “I guess…”

T: “Tell me what you initially wanted to talk about. Please?”

J: “Well… the thing is, you always seemed like a nice and fun guy, so… I guess I wanted to ask if you’d like to hang out sometime…”

Jungkook was pretty embarrassed admitting this, although it was only half of the truth, so he turned his eyes away as he talked and brought them back to Taehyung only after he realized the silence was too long following his confession. He saw Taehyung with his mouth and eyes frozen in a widely open state and with his hands grabbing his head as he said:

T: “I kept running from you and assuming the worst when, all along, you wanted something like this?!”

J: “…”

T: “Jungkook, I’m sorry!” Taehyung practically shouted, taking another 90 degrees bow which made Jungkook chuckle.

J: “You keep apologizing like this… I think you’ve watched too much anime.”

T: “You watch anime too?”

J: “No.” Jungkook answered quickly, then mentally kicked himself for lying about that for no good reason at all, especially since it was what had made him Cookie and had brought him and Taehyung together in the first place.

T: “Anyway, I really deserve getting punched by you now, so go on. Do your worst.” Taehyung said shutting his eyes tightly.

J: “Taehyung, I don’t wanna punch you.”

T: “It’ll make me feel better. We’ll be even and start from zero. So, come on – let out everything you’ve got pent up in one quick blow.” Taehyung instructed, keeping his eyes tightly shut as he gestured with his hands for Jungkook to come at him.

Nothing happened for quite a few seconds and Taehyung thought Jungkook had left since he couldn’t hear anything either. Then, all of a sudden, he felt a hand on his shoulder and a light kiss on his lips. By the time he opened his eyes, Jungkook was already behind him, walking away swiftly.

Taehyung didn’t go after him, he didn’t even turn back to watch him go. He remained in place, completely still, turned statue from the shock.

For the rest of the day, Taehyung did not say a word to anybody and the following days weren’t much better. His friends were starting to theorize that what was happening to Taehyung had something to do with the paranormal side, because he would often stare blankly into space, make faces like he was having a heated conversation with himself and jump out of his skin whenever someone touched him.

He didn’t even go online for quite a while but, when he did, he received a message from Cookie, which he answered almost on autopilot.

Cookie: Hey, Taehyung! What’s up?

TaeX2: Hey, Cookie

Cookie: You haven’t said anything in almost a week. Something wrong?

TaeX2: No

Cookie: …

Cookie: You’re answering slow and in very few words… That’s not like you…

Cookie: Did something happen?

TaeX2: Something always happens
