Pizza

Pizza

It had only been two days since Changkyun had gone on vacation, yet here you were sprawled out your bed with a large pizza to yourself, waiting for him to message you back as an episode of Weightlifting Fairy played on your laptop. Of course, you weren’t focused on that. In fact, you were so engrossed with your messages that you almost missed your mouth trying to eat a slice of pizza. Twice. You couldn’t understand why you missed him so much. Sure, he was your best friend, but you never missed any of your other friends like this when they weren’t around. You thought perhaps it was simply because it was summer, and you no longer had the obligation of university classes keeping you busy every day, so you had more time to sit and do nothing. When you weren’t working at least.

Sitting up, you read through his last message, and continued with your conversation.

You couldn’t help but laugh at his ridiculous photo. Changkyun was certainly talented, you had to give him that. But the more you looked at the photo, the more you thought it looked kind of cute. Shaking your head, you said goodnight to Changkyun, and took your pizza to the fridge to save the rest for the next day. Somehow, it didn’t feel the same as when you had pizza with him. When you came back to your room, you checked for any more messages from Changkyun, and headed to bed yourself, sleepy and full.

The next week, you didn’t talk much with Changkyun except on the nights. He was busy spending his vacation doing fun things, whilst you were at home watching dramas and working your summer job. You found yourself thinking about him a lot, daydreaming at work, on your way home, even when trying to watch a drama. You couldn’t help it, and you didn’t know why. Just thinking about getting his messages later excited you. Feeling confused, you decided to consult one of your female friends as to why you happened to feel the way you did.

“Hello?” y/f/n answered.

“Hey it’s me! Listen I have something to ask you about, can you come over? Preferably in like five minutes.” She paused for a minute before replying.

“Yeah I can be there. But five minutes isn’t gonna happen. I’ll be there in like ten minutes, see you soon!” Hanging up the phone, you tossed your phone aside, knowing you wouldn’t need it for a while. Even if you decided to flick through twitter or Instagram, you knew that you’d never be able to focus on anything, so there wasn’t much point. Instead, you collapsed onto your bed, staring up at the pale ceiling above you. As you kept staring, your vision grew blurry and you began to think of him again, wondering what he had done today, and if he was having a good time. You thought it was a normal thing to hope your best friend has a good time on vacation, so why did it seem so weird to you?

Eventually, ten minutes had passed before you knew it, and there came a knock at your door. Jumping up, you ran to it and let y/f/n in.

“I’m so glad you’re here, I’ve been so confused lately.” You frowned, sitting down on the couch with her. She smiled at you knowingly.

“Is this about a boy?” The second your eyebrows raised in surprise, her smile turned into a grin. “I knew it. I’m good you see.”

“Okay yes, but it’s not what you think.” y/f/n’s expression showed that she didn’t believe you one bit. Folding her arms, she smiled again.

“Alright fine, then tell me.”

“Changkyun went on vacation, and I literally haven’t stopped thinking about him. I don’t know why I’m making such a big deal though, he’s my best friend of course I’m going to think about him, especially when he’s not here to entertain me with his stupidity. Which reminds me, I have a photo I need to show you later. But with this, I have no idea. I just miss him like crazy… Am I a clingy best friend? Oh god I didn’t want to be the clingy best friend!” Before you could say anymore, y/f/n had cut you off by laughing.

“y/n, when I say ‘is this about a boy’, this is generally the kind of thing I’m talking about. You are so naïve I don’t know if it’s precious or hilarious. Or both.” You quirked an eyebrow at her, crossing your arms.

“Do you have a point with this?”

“Obviously you like him! To be honest, I thought you always did, but I guess better late than never! If you seriously miss him as much as you say, and think about him that much that it’s confusing you, I think you like him.” Your eyes widened. Could that really be it? You and Changkyun had been friends for years, but never before had you considered it. Then again, you guys were younger then, and getting older had clearly changed your thoughts on the matter. You thought about it briefly, thought about how he was genuinely a nice, funny, sweet guy that you could trust. It wouldn’t be such a bad thing to like him, would it?

“Maybe you’re right… How do I know for sure though?” y/f/n thought for a moment.

“How do you feel when you think about him? Do you get butterflies in your stomach? Start to feel shy even though you’ve known him for years?” You nodded.

“My stomach twists when I think about him… in a good way I mean, if that makes sense.” She nodded too.

“You definitely like him. I think you should tell him when he gets back.” You were taken aback by her bold suggestion.

“What?! I can’t tell him, what if he doesn’t like me back? He’s one of the best friends I’ve ever had, I can’t risk losing that!”

“But think about the benefits! You’ll be the way you guys are now but with more cuddling and kissing!” y/f/n laughed, patting your leg. “You just have to go for it, because I have a feeling that you might get lucky. And I’m rarely ever wrong.” She winked. You thought about it for a while before eventually agreeing with her.

“I’ll do it.”

“Okay, see you soon Changkyun!” Hanging up the phone, you exhaled loudly. Changkyun was on his way over, but you were nervous beyond belief. You were almost to the point of chickening out and telling him not to come, but the thought of a relationship with your best friend kept you feeling as confident as you were able. You had decided that you were going to just tell him straight, like ripping off a band-aid.

Soon enough, the knock you had been waiting for came. You felt a sense of unease, but you powered through it anyway, and made for the door. As you pulled it open, you were met with the bright, smiling face of your best friend, who moved in to hug you almost immediately.

“Hi y/n!” He grinned, squishing you in his arms. Struggling for breath, you hugged him back, but ultimately had to pry yourself away before you suffocated.

“Oh good, I can breathe again.” He smiled at you sheepishly, closing the door behind him as he stepped fully into your apartment.

“Sorry, I just missed you.” You raised an eyebrow, smirking at him.

“My how the tables have turned.” He rolled his eyes, making you laugh. You were back to feeling comfortable again, and wondering momentarily what you were ever worried about. When it hit you again, you swallowed the lump in your throat, and sat down on the couch with him. “Listen, there’s something I need to talk to you about, something that’s happened while you were away.” He looked at you innocently, nodding his head to show he was listening. “I don’t know how to say it, so I’m just going to do it…” You took one last deep breath. “I like you.” He stared at you for a moment, making you catch your breath, but then he grinned.

“Well, finally!” You were surprised by his response, unsure what to say. “Sorry, it’s just that I’ve liked you for a while now too but I didn’t know how to say it. I’m impressed that you just did it, you’ve got more courage than I do that’s for sure.” He chuckled. You couldn’t help but smile like an idiot as he took one of your hands.

“I’m glad I did.” You threw your arms around his waist, and pulled yourself closer to hug him. “I’m glad I get to be with my best friend.” His arms wrapped themselves around you, hugging you back.

“Me too.” You stayed that way together for some time, until Changkyun’s stomach rumbled. Pulling away, you pulled a face at him.

“You haven’t eaten?”

“Technically that’s on you, I came straight here!” As he finished speaking, he pulled out his phone and looked at you. “Pizza?” A small smile crept up onto your face.

“Yeah…” You nodded. “Eating pizza just hasn’t been the same without you.”

“I know just what you mean.”
