Part I: A Lonely Boy

Only With You Will I Fly

Once upon a time, there lived a boy in an island very far away in a world where angels existed among them. A lonely boy who had never met one but often let his imagination wander. Everyday, he made his way to the edge of the island, where he saw the sunset glimmer against the blue water and he felt the fresh sand against his feet and let the waves sing to him as the wind softly caressed through his entire being. One day, just like any other day, as he walked by the edge and the cold water hit against his skin, he heard a voice, "why do you always come here?" He turned around but saw no one. Was it his imagination again? "No, up here!" The boy looked up and there he was with his white wings, a pair of worn jeans and a white button shirt, and a bright smile. A-an angel?! The boy stared at him in disbelief and unable to speak as he admired the black-haired angel who almost seemed like a painting as the sunset shone behind him and made him look like a sweet dream. "Do you not speak?" The boy still startled managed to say, "yes..."

"What is your name? I'm Jinyoung, by the way."

"I'm M-mark" the boy whispered almost like if it was an unspeakable secret. But that only made the angel more intrigued.

"Why do you always come here alone? Do you not have friends?"

"I... well... no one knows my language here so in order to pass time I come here." The boy suddenly had the realization that the angel understood his language. He was so dazzled by the angel's beauty that he didn't noticed he, for a long time, finally held a conversation with someone.

The angel smiled brightly and asked, "would you like to be my friend, then?"

Mark felt his body heat up and his heart raced a bit, something he had never felt before. Was it the summer heat? No. It couldn’t be. The summers here are always fresh, not like where he came from. Suddenly, reality started to set in. An angel is before him, something he always imagined about but never would he had thought that this was what it actually felt like. In a moment of panic, he ran off and the angel didn’t follow behind.

That night he fell asleep so peacefully, for the first time since he arrived at the island. He dreamt of the angel named Jinyoung who told him "I'll be waiting". The boy woke from his dream and felt a tear fall down his cheek. Why did the angel look so lonely in his dream? He looked out his window as the full moon shone brightly against the trees. He couldn't fall back asleep and he wondered if the angel was a projection of his longing for someone to understand him or was he real. There was only one way to find out and he couldn't wait any longer. As he took the same path to the coast, he couldn't help but feel different. This was the first time he went out at night but he wasn't afraid, he was more like desperate. He was desperate to get to the ocean. Even though, in every visit, he always took his time but now he found himself running towards it. His lungs burned and his legs ached but he didn't care, he just wanted to get there. As he left the trees behind and the sound of clashing waves became louder, he made his way to the same spot where he saw the angel but he was nowhere to be seen. Was it, after all, a dream? Was he going crazy? Or did the angel decided he wasn't worth his friendship and left somewhere far away where his wings could take him? The boy fell to his knees and the water hit against him, so coldly, almost like it mocked his misery. He felt an emptiness he had never felt before. He stood from where he was kneeling and made a turn. There he was. Jinyoung sat on top of a cliff, where at the bottom the waves violently hit, looking up at the moon. Mark ran towards him, unable to scream. All he could do was gasp for air and run with all his might towards the angel. He wanted to get to the angel as fast as possible, he felt afraid that he might suddenly fly towards the moon and never come back. Mark felt his chest tightened, not just because he was running out of breath but also because he felt like the angel was crying and all he wanted was to get there to comfort him. He got as close as possible, the angel still unaware of Mark’s presence, he stopped and stared in admiration. How can such a beautiful being look so lonely? Then, something took over Mark and he screamed from the top of his lungs, even if they burned from all the exhaustion, "Jinyoungie!" He didn’t seem to hear Mark, no matter how loud he tried to be, the waves were louder and Jinyoung was too high up.

The angel felt a sudden urge to turn as if looking for someone who was waiting for him. He felt the wind whispering to him to find Him and the waves screamed keep looking. As he desperately looked around, in the distance he saw Mark, out of breath and looking at him, down by the shore and in that moment the wind stopped whispering and the waves stopped screaming. All he heard was Mark calling his name.

The boy still out of breath felt tears falling down his rosy cheeks, unable to stop he cried out, "Please be my friend! Don't leave me alone!"

The angel, without a second thought, flapped his wings towards the boy. He landed a few feet away from Mark so gracefully and walked towards him as he extended his hand, "forever?"

The boy, tears still falling uncontrollably, nodded in response as he held the angel's hand. As soon as their skin made contact, Mark’s legs gave up on him. Jinyoung couldn't help but chuckle at this boy who had desperately ran towards him. The angel felt his chest warm up and a smile showed on his face. Mark had delicate features. Everything about him seemed fragile but his very being was strong and determined. His eyes were soft and gentle. He seemed untainted and pure but there was more to him, like if he had the whole world's weight on his shoulder.

Jinyoung wanted to stop Mark's crying but didn't know how to, so, he did what he thought was the best choice. He picked Mark up and flew to the rock where he was sitting at. By the time they landed, Mark had stopped his crying and looked around in confusion and awe.

"You p-picked me... I-I flew... How did you..?" Mark stammered, unable to make a full sentence.

Jinyoung delighted with Mark's reaction responded, "You're not that heavy, in all honesty. And my wings are quite strong!"

Mark confused face soon turned into a smile. They both let out laughter like two innocent kids until tears formed and their stomachs ached. Full of pure happiness. They sat and stared at the view before them, even though neither of them spoke, it wasn't uncomfortable or awkward. On the contrary, they both felt calm and warm with each other's presence. The waves seemed to have calmed down, almost as if they were in sync with their hearts.

This was the first time the moon seemed so close and Mark felt like he could touch it just by extending his arm. He couldn’t believe how high up he was. When he saw Jinyoung from the bottom, it felt like such an unreachable place but now he sat there, the place he so desperately wanted to reach, next to the person he wholeheartedly called for.

Mark slowly felt his eyes become heavy and Jinyoung took note of that so he gently grabbed Mark and laid him over his wing. Mark felt the warmth and softness of Jinyoung's wing against his cheek and he fell under a deep slumber.
