The boy next door

Roommates

To Mark Jinyoung was the boy next door. The college dorm neighbour he could say hi to in the morning, and silently crush over during The day. The cute, lovely, sweet boy next door. Mark's roommate Bambam on the other hand had no business with Jinyoung what so ever, although Jinyoung's roommate was another story.

Yugyeom had been Bambam's boy next door. Now it was his boyfriend next door. Don't get him wrong he was happy that Bambam and Yugyeom finally got together, it still didn't mean Bambam's endless rants about how cute Yugyeom was had ended. And it led to some suprisisng changes.

"Hyungs" Bambam started talking looking nervous. Bambam and Yugyeom had gathered both Jinyoung and Mark in Bambam's and Mark's room. They were currently sitting next to each on Mark's bed.
They wanted to tell them something they'd said, and when Bambam started speaking formally... well it either meant he needed something from you or he broke something.

"We would like to switch roommates" Yugyeom said confidentaly. "Now that we are together we would like to share a dorm room, but that would mean the two of you would be in a dorm together" Bambam said a little less confident trying to ask as politely as possible. Mark's eyes widened. In a dorm with Jinyoung, yes he would love that, but he didn't think he would survive.

Jinyoung looked at Mark. He adored the guy. He liked his smile and his soft voice and kind personality. He was happy for Yugyeom and Bambam, but sharing a room with Mark, he didn't want to fall any harder for the older then he already had. Mark turned his head to him and Jinyoung threw him a smile. Mark smiled back and Jinyoung nodded at him. It would have advantages to be in a room together, it meant a rant or twenty about Bambam less.

"Okay guys, we'll try it out for a while" Mark said still smiling.

"Okay we get that-  wait what" Bambam said looking confused. "You're okay with this?"

"It can't hurt to try, right" Jinyoung said looking at Mark again. "Okay, okay this is great" Bambam whooped in excitement.

"Yugyeom go grab your stuff" he said while getting up from his bed. "We're moving" and they all laughed at Bambam's childlike excitement.

Mark was trying to get all his stuff to Jinyoung's, and now his, room. Which proved to be harder then he thought, whith Bambam and Yugyeom running from room to room and stuff flying around. Jinyoung had offered to help him after ten minutes of laughing at their struggles which Mark had gladly accepted.

He dropped himself on the bed now that everything was finally settled. "Hyungs we're going out" Bambam said peeking around the almost closed door.

"No need to tell us that anymore" Mark mumbled into his pillow, but Bambam couldn't hear him. "Byeeee" he yelled while closing the door.

"Those two" Jinyoung sighed out while also dropping himself on his bed. "Yeah they are me a bunch" Mark complied.

"How did that even happen?" Jinyoung asked now looking at Mark.

"All I know is that Bambam was crushing on Yugyeom real hard. Yugyeom this, Yugyeom that. He even called him the boy next door" Mark chuckeled at the thought of Bambam's endless stories about Yugyeom. "I'll inform you that Yugyeom was the exact same" Jinyoung said laughing too. They smiled at each other.

"I don't think I have ever properly introduced myself, have I?" Mark suddenly asked. "Mark Tuan, nice to meet you" he continued while sticking out his hand for Jinyoung to shake.

"Park Jinyoung, the pleasure is all mine" Jinyoung replied while shaking Mark's hand. His hand felt smooth and warm in his and maybe he held on a bit too long. If Mark knew how much Jinyoung already knew about him he would probably be even more creeped out.

"You major in literature right?" Mark asked. Jinyoung nodded, "and you major in maths, no?" Jinyoung answered. It looked like Mark knew a thing or two about him too. Mark smiled at him nodding. "Do you enjoy it" Mark asked.

"Yeah it's okay, I like to read so" Jinyoung said.

Mark knew he liked to read. Whenever he saw him he would either have a book with him or he would be reading one.

"Any favourites?" He asked. Jinyoung was surprised because Mark seemed to be genuinely interested. Mostly when he said he liked reading people just hummed and changed topic. "Not really" Jinyoung said trying to think "I still have a lot I want to read" he decided to answer.

"Makes sence" Mark replied smiling.

"How about you. Any hobbies?" Jinyoung said just as interested. He sat up on his bed to look at Mark.

Mark sat up too and said "I like to dance or play basketball, but that's about it really." "Sounds nice" Jinyoung said. "We could go play together once" Mark said without thinking.

Jinyoung blushed a little "No, I'm no good at sports" Jinyoung said waving his hands in denial. "You can't be that bad" Mark said chuckling "it's just for fun anyway."

"Yeah you're right" Jinyoung smiled. He couldn't seem to stop smiling around Mark.

He dropped himself back on his bed again, tomorrow was Monday which meant classes again. The moving had taken up so much time and Jinyoung was tired so he decided to just call it a night. He quickly changed in the bathroom and jumped back into bed grabbing a book, Mark's eyes on him the whole time.

"I don't mind if you go to bed" Mark said guessing what Jinyoung had been thinking. Jinyoung didn't want to fall asleep on Mark, maybe Mark would think he was a boring person or that Jinyoung didn't like him and tried to avoid talking to him.

"You don't mind?" He asked hesitating. "Of course not, I mean you must be tired after helping me move and stuff" Mark said smiling kindly.

"Aren't you?" Jinyoung asked a little concerned.

"No I'm fine don't worry just go to sleep." Jinyoung did as Mark said and turned off the light next to his bed.

--

He woke up around 1 am seeing Mark sit on his bed while typing away on his laptop. "You're still awake?" Jinyoung asked in a hoarse voice.

"Oh, did I wake you up" Mark whispered apologetically.

"No you didn't" Jinyoung assured him "but it's not at all healthy to still be up this late" he said in a more scolding way "do you do this more often?"

"Uhm, every night?" Mark said like it was a question. He knew it wasn't the best thing to do but he couldn't really sleep easily and Bambam had never really cared anyways.

He was suprised to see that Jinyoung did, he was almost always suprised when people cared. When you're a person that doesn't talk much like Mark people just stop caring along the way. Jinyoung on the other hand hadn't stopped caring. Not yet, Mark told himself, it's too good to be true anyway.

"If it bothers you I could go somewhere else" he continued. They both knew that was a lie, Mark didn't have anywhere to go.

"No, no you're staying here" Jinyoung quickly said. "It doesn't bother me, I'm just concerned about you." He was now sitting up looking at Mark. Mark didn't look like he was tired or exhausted in any way. Maybe he just didn't need a lot of sleep Jinyoung said to himself. Still he didn't like the idea of Mark not getting any sleep.

"Don't worry about me, okay" Mark said bitterly. "Why not?" Jinyoung replied. Mark sighed. He felt like telling Jinyoung, he felt like throwing his heart out to him, something be never did.

"Because no one cares anyways, so it doesn't matter if you don't either" Mark finally huffed out.

"Well I do" Jinyoung said sternly, still looting at Mark with concern. "Alright, I'll let you stay up this late and I'll try to not worry my off about you getting sleep deprived, if I get the shower first in the morning." Jinyoung said like he was making a great deal. Mark laughed, Jinyoung was just adorable.

"Alright deal" he said "if you go play basketball with me tomorrow" he sneakily added.

"But tomorrow is Monday" Jinyoung responded. He needed some excuse to not go with Mark. He would love to, yes, but he would only make a fool of himself in front of Mark, and that was not something he wanted to do.

"So?" Mark questioned.

"Alright" Jinyoung complied "but don't you dare laugh at me when you find out how terrible I am" he said as if threatening him.

"Alright I can do that" he said quickly adding "I think." Mark could only laugh at the face Jinyoung made at him after he said that.

"Go to sleep Mark" was the only thing Jinyoung eventually said.

"Goodnight Jinyoung" Mark answered while closing up his laptop.

"Night" was the only reply he received from an already half asleep Jinyoung. He smiled to himself once more before turning off the lights.

--
Mark was sitting on the basketball court playing with the ball in his hands. He was supposed to meet Jinyoung here ten minutes ago. He knew it was too good to be true. Just when he wanted to leave he heard rushing footsteps. He looked up to see Jinyoung sprinting towards him, skidding to a halt in front of him breathing heavily.

"Sorry, sorry" he tried to say while trying to catch his breath. "Teacher kept us behind because some kid thought it was funny to provoke him" he managed to say.

"You came" Mark said in surprise. He was suprised Jinyoung still showed up. "Of course" Jinyoung said like it was obvious he came.

"I thought you hate basketball" Mark said still suprised.

"I don't hate it, I'm just not good at it" he answered while taking he ball from Mark. Mark swiftly got up and took the ball back from Jinyoun with ease.

"I can tell" he said chuckling.

"That's not fair" Jinyoung exclaimed while desperately trying to get the ball back from Mark.

Mark skilfully passed him and scored. Jinyoung looked at him shoot. Mark shot with ease and a natural grace, he wondered how the older would look while dancing. Suddenly the ball came flying towards him and he unconsciously caught it.

"Stop daydreaming" Mark yelled from the other side of the court. "Nice catch by the way" he continued as Jinyoung dribbled towards him. They kept on playing until it was too dark to see, laughing and having fun.

When they came back to their room they both collapsed on their beds in exhaustion.

"Alright" Jinyoung roled over to look at Mark "we still have homework to finish. If we tackle it together we might be done before midnight." Mark grumbled, Jinyoung was right, there was work to do.

"Fine" he said dragging himself off the bed.

Monday became their weekly basketball day. They would stay at the court to play either until they couldn't see anymore or it got too cold. After they would do their homework together, not always finishing before midnight, but still quicker then they would on their own. They grew closer and became the best of friend. Sometimes Yugyeom and Bambam would walk in spontaneously and they would go out with the four of them.

--

Exams were coming up and Jinyoung was freaking out. Mark on the other hand just wanted it to be over with already. It meant late nights studying, Mark wearing Jinyoung's comfy sweaters because he seemed to have tons of those and Jinyoung falling alseep on top of his books meaning that Mark had to put him in bed.

He remembered one night he was so tired he had dropped Jinyoung on his bed, dropped himself next to Jinyoung and fell asleep.

When he woke up he saw Jinyoung still sleeping cuddled up next to him. Jinyoung sleeping was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen. He was still studying Jinyoung's face when Jinyoung woke up. "Morning" he said suprised to see Mark lying next to him. He yawned "are you wearing my sweater again" he asked.

"Yeah sorry they're just so comfortable, but I won't do it anymore if you don't like it" Mark said apologetically.

"No" Jinyoung said "I don't mind. Besides you look cute in them" he added while getting out of bed to shower leaving a startled Mark behind.

--

When exams had finally finished they both didn't know what to do anymore. The past weeks had been filled with studying, taking exams and studying again. Now that they had a whole free week there was too much time for them.

The first day was spent inside their dorm, the two of them sleeping, watching movies and then sleeping some more. The second day they decided to go outside to enjoy the weather, play some basketball as their tradition had faltered during exams, and eat ice cream. The third day Jackson came to visit.

Jackson.

Mark had told Jinyoung about Jackson, friends they were. Only Jackson seemed like more then a friend to Jinyoung. He was clinging to Mark like his life depended on it, hugging him and claiming all of his attention. They went out to eat together and Jackson's behaviour didn't change a bit. Jinyoung felt an uneasy feeling in his chest. He wasn't jealous was he? Mark wasn't even his. Did he even want Mark to be his? Apparently he did.

But Mark looked happy, and that was all Jinyoung really wanted. For Mark to be happy. Wether that was with him or Jackson, if he was happy it was okay. Still he couldn't get rid of the burning sensation in his chest.

"Jinyoung?" Jinyoung hummed in response. They were back in their dorm room. Jackson had left a couple of minutes ago and Jinyoung hadn't said anything ever since. It was usually silent as both of them were not really big talkers, but this silence was awkward, which silence never was in their case.

"Jackson is throwing a party tonight. He asked if I wanted to come" Mark said. He thought Jinyoung was acting weird. He was unusually quiet even around Jackson while he mostly tried to be polite and start a conversation, even if he didn't want to talk. Mark couldn't help but think something was wrong, but he didn't dare ask knowing Jinyoung would simply shut down and not tell him.

"So" Jinyoung replied sounding hurt.

"What's wrong Jinyoungie" he said sitting down next to Jinyoung on his bed.

"Nothing" Jinyoung said turning away from Mark. He didn't want to tell Mark because it meant confessing that he had been jealous. They were only friends and Mark had the right to have other friends beside him.

"You go to the party, but I'm not going with you. I'm tired and I don't like parties anyways" he said lying down still avoiding Mark's gaze.

Mark was hurt. He wanted to know what was going on, he didn't like seeing Jinyoung hurt. He wanted him to be happy. He didn't want to be the reason Jinyoung was sad, he realized, he wanted to be the reason Jinyoung smiled.

"Okay, if that's what you want" Mark added softly. He got up to walk out of the dorm.

"Mark" he heard Jinyoung say. He turned around to look at him. "Don't do anything stupid okay" Jinyoung said a little sad. Mark rushed towards him and hugged him tight.

"Don't worry. I'll be fine, it's just a party" he said in Jinyoung's shoulder. He felt him nodding, and he let go getting out of the door without looking back.

--

Jinyoung woke up with Mark snuggled up next to him. He didn't remeber Mark coming in last night. Mark didn't smell of alcohol, actually he smelt like he always did, like his shampoo. He had his face buried on Jinyoung's chest and his arm slung across his stomach. Jinyoung smiled, the older was wearing his sweater again. He ran his hand through Mark's hair and sighed contently.

"Good morning" he heard Mark say in a husky voice that sent shivers down his spine.

"I didn't notice you coming in yesterday" he said his hand still on Mark's neck. "I left the party early, but when I came here you were already asleep" Mark explained yawning.

"Why did you leave?" Jinyoung asked.

"The party wasn't great and I felt bad for leaving you alone here. Besides this is ten times better then partying with Jackson" he said snuggling his head closer into Jinyoung's chest.

They had woken up pretty late and decided to spent the day in bed, talking, playing games on their phones and occasionally having tickle fights, mostly inniciated by Jinyoung. Nothing was said about last night, no words spoken about Mark coming home early or Jinyoung being angry. Both were afraid to label the relationship they had, not wanting to ruin it. They didn't want to cross the line, but were playing really close to it.

When it was time for diner and they were contemplating whether to order food or eat out, Yugyeom and Bambam stormed into their room. "Hyungs" Yugyeom yelled "get out of bed. "Eeeeew" Bambam signature phrase was heard "get out, we're going out for diner" he added.

"What" Mark said confused.

"We're going out for food" Yugyeom said loudly emphasizing every word. "Yeah come on get out of bed" Bambam added. Mark and Jinyoung threw each other a look.

"Alright" Jinyoung carefully said "we'll be out in a sec, now get out" he added waving them away. "Just hurry" Bambam yelled while closing the door.

"Those two" Mark sighed out while getting out of bed. "I'm keeping your sweater on" he said matter of factly.

"Sure" Jinyoung chuckled. Their day had been lovely but maybe it was good for the both of them to get out of the dorm. They changed and headed out to see an impatient Bambam and Yugyeom waiting.

"We're getting Thai food" Bambam said excited. The others just laughed, and they left.

"So hyungs, you're finally together?" Yugyeom asked while munching on his food. Mark choked on his food and Jinyoung turned bright red.

"No" Mark managed to choke out between coughs.

"You're not" Bambam said in surprise "oh, we thought you were" he added.

"What makes you say that" Jinyoung asked still a little flushed.

"I don't know, you're just so close and cuddly sometimes, so we just put one and one together." Bambam stated. "Markjin, I like it" Yugyeom added thoughtfully.

"Haha you're crazy" Mark said now done coughing.

"Yeah that's ridiculous" Jinyoung added.

"Okay. I still like it though" Yugyeom simply answered, and they continued eating. Mark and Jinyoung ended up paying and when they left the restaurant Yugyeom and Bambam left them to go do 'some other stuff.'

"Lets go play basketball" Mark proposed and Jinyoung hapilly complied. The silence between them had been awkward but now everything seemed to be back to normal again.

On the basketball court Mark couldn't help but notice how much Jinyoung had improved. Mark was still significantly better but Jinyoung now managed to keep up with him and sometimes even get past him. As always they had a lot of fun together, but something felt off. Mark knew what it was, but he wasn't ready to say it, not ready to cross the line they had been staying so close to. Then again he did want it, he wanted to talk about it with Jinyoung, he wanted to know how the other felt about him.

Jinyoung on the other hand was just as afraid. Had he been so obvious at showing affection for the older, even he only knew about his true feelings for about a week or so. He was afraid of confronting Mark, afraid that Mark would hate him. Seeing the way he had responded to Bambam's questions Jinyoung knew Mark would hate him.

"Jinyoungie" Mark said and Jinyoung almost exploded at the use of the nickname. He stopped playing to turn around and look at Mark. "Yes" he said. His breath hitched Mark looked so amazing in Jinyoung's sweater on the almost dark basketball court.

Mark couldn't help but admire Jinyoung's beauty too, and he knew he loved the other. Loved every single inch of him. Loved how he was worried and jealous and kind, loved how he actually cared about Mark, Mark and no one else. Mark wasn't a talker Jinyoung knew that so he did what felt right and walked up to Jinyoung and hugged him as tight as he could.

Jinyoung sighed and hugged Mark back tightly. "Do you really think it's ridiculous for us to be together" Mark said quietly into Jinyoung's shoulder but not quiet enough for Jinyoung not to hear.

"Why" he asked pulling away and looking at Mark's face. "That's what you said" Mark continued.

"I-I just" Jinyoung sighed again.

There was no line. They had crossed it long ago leaving it far behind, the only thing holding them back now was their own fear.

"Yes it would be ridiculous" Jinyoung said and he saw Mark's face fall.

"Because it wouldn't change anything between us would it?" He quickly continued "we would still be the best of friends, we would still cuddle together when we sleep, we would still talk and play basketball" Jinyoung started rambling and Mark smiled.

"Yes, we would" he said comforting Jinyoung. Jinyoung smiled at him. "The only different thing would be that I could call you cute whenever I want" Jinyoung said.

"Oh I don't mind you doing that at all" Mark said smiling brightly. Mark brought his face closer to Jinyoung their noses now touching.

"You could also call me your boyfriend" he said cheekily. Jinyoung blushed and Mark chuckled at how cute he was. "You want me to?" Jinyoung asked shyly.

"Am I that obvious" Mar answered, and then he kissed him.

It was a sweet soft kiss full of love and affection. Their lips moving together perfectly. Mark pulled Jinyoung closer and Jinyoung put his arms around Mark's waist. Mark was the first to pull away catching his breath.

"Yes, I would want you to call me your boyfriend" he said. Jinyoung smiled brighter then ever. "Only if I get the shower first in the morning." Mark laughed at this, at how silly but oh so cute Jinyoung was being.

"We could always shower together" at this Jinyoung smacked his arm. "Alright, alright deal, the shower is all yours, and you're all mine."

"Eeeeeew" they heard someone yelling recognizing Bambam's voice. "And you're telling me you are not together" they heard Yugyeom say, and they saw both of them walking off together.

"Those two" Jinyoung said. "Yeah I know" Mark said intertwining his fingers with Jinyoung's "but they did get us together in a way" he continued. They smiled at each other and started walking back to their dorm, just to cuddle and fall asleep, now officially together.
