That Spring

That spring was when Jeon Wonwoo realized he was in love.

He was never one with relationships. People called him a hopeless romantic- a trait that completely contrasts his visual appearance and personality. He wanted someone who would hold him and be with him until the end of time. Someone who would be by his side and whisper sweet nothing into his ears. Maybe that was too much to ask for.

He met with many different people at different places, at different lives, all starting well but ending in the same result.

There was Minhyuk whom Wonwoo was with for about two weeks. He was an outgoing man, always loving parties and loud crowded places. As fun as he was, Wonwoo was quite not fond of him. He dragged Wonwoo too much to parties and often called him boring as Wonwoo did not enjoy parties. He was too much for Wonwoo to handle. It just didn’t work out.

After him was Jaebum. He was super sweet and nice, only problem was that he was a control freak. He was too clingy, always asking where and what Wonwoo was doing. Wonwoo couldn’t breathe, often feeling like he was suffocating around him.

Seokmin. They could’ve worked out, he was absolutely great and one of the nicest person Wonwoo has ever met. But they didn’t have “that spark” nevertheless they decided it was best to remain as friends.

Minwoo was the worst. Like Minhyuk he loved parties and like Jaebum he was possessive. But Wonwoo still loved him. They shared similar traits and had the same interests. He thought Minwoo was the one and thought he was the first he’d give himself up to, that was until he woke the next morning and Minwoo was gone.

Wonwoo was really not a picky person. He just wanted someone. Every day he’d pray that maybe just maybe today was the day he’d bump into this soulmate - someone he’d finally give his heart to.

But his dates were just so so - average. There wasn’t anyone he was attracted to. He tried, but he couldn’t no matter how much he wanted to. It was frustrating, annoying to him. Why couldn’t he love anyone?

“You’re pretty boring.” - Wonwoo was an introvert. He kept himself quiet and tried his best to become more outgoing but that personality just didn’t fit in. He tried to be wild with one date when they had gone to the amusement park, something Wonwoo wasn’t quite fond of, so he forced himself onto extreme rides which didn’t last well.

“You don’t talk much do you?” Again that matched with his introverted personality. He was a quiet man. His hobbies are reading books and listening to classical music. He enjoyed coffee and napping. He disliked chaos and loud noise. Was that too difficult to understand?

Breakups didn’t hurt much to Wonwoo - which he was confused if he should be or not. Known as being an ice prince ever since he was young, experiences like pain and regret never really occurred to him. Being on dates with someone was awkward and was mentally difficult for him. His heart wouldn’t flutter, and his mind wouldn’t feel bad.

He did have one feeling though- it was usually jealousy.

Sitting in cafes were the worst. Wonwoo would sit by the windows alone, his eyes often drifting off to stare at the several dates and couples around him. He was so curious about how love would feel, how falling in love would feel. Everyone was in love but him.

“Don’t worry you’ll eventually find someone.” His mother once told him. The lovely son he was, he listened to his mother’s wise words. He waited and waited for that somebody- that somebody’s arms he would run into. That somebody he would hug and never let go.

The weather was changing, the season was changing. It was winter.

Cold and quiet just like how Wonwoo was. He walked through the snow filled streets, watching the white mists that breathed out his lips. He wasn’t cold, but he wanted someone he could link his arms with and drink coffee with.

It was another lonely Christmas and New Years.

Until that spring came.

Cherry blossoms fluttered down from the pink trees and onto the streets of Seoul. Some petals caught onto Wonwoo’s black hair as he walked through them. He walked alone, passing through couples who were admiring the romantic scenes of the cherry blossoms.

He walked through the park, and that’s where Wonwoo met him.

He was walking through the green park on the sunny spring day, holding numerous amounts of different colored balloons in his hands to hand out to the kids that piled onto him.

He had a toothy smile, with sharp canines and sparkly eyes. His skin was the most beautiful shade of tan Wonwoo had ever seen, almost as if he was kissed by the sun.

“Oh? You want me to carry you?” His voice was deep and charming when he spoke to a young girl who had asked for a piggyback ride. He smiled and picked her up to a magnificent height. He was much taller than Wonwoo; it was a perfect height difference.

“Would you like a piggyback ride too?” He had suddenly asked Wonwoo with a wide smile and Wonwoo’s foxy eyes had widened the most he could ever imagine.

Wonwoo felt his cheeks heat up. He hadn’t checked the weather but it must have had been very hot that spring day.

The cherry blossoms were still falling and the wind picked it up around Wonwoo and the man, and it was that spring day when Wonwoo knew, he fell in love.

Kim Mingyu was one year younger than Wonwoo. He was a bright young man training to become a chef. “I want to be the best chef in the world, let everyone know what real food tastes like.”

They had been together for two months and needless to say, Wonwoo was falling hopelessly in love. Mingyu was so much more different than anyone else he had been with.

The younger was an extrovert. He liked parties and bizarre food and loud music and sports and movies. And yet Wonwoo could not have fallen for him more. It was the first time he had ever felt his heart jump.

He loved how considerate Mingyu was.
