Foreword

"What the hell do you think you're doing with that?!" I jump out of the truck practically running through the small yard, making my way to a woman in her thirties who had just exchanged cash for the music box resting strangely in her arm. I yank it out of her hands receiving a hiss from my mother and a cacophony of apologies to the startled stranger.

"I am so sorry, please forgive my daughter," she pleads, taking the woman's trembling hands into her small calloused ones. "Nayeon say your sorry and give it back."

"Mom are you crazy?!" I whisper, not sure why the drop in tone but certain that if I talk any louder I'll start screaming.

"What are you doing? This is all gramps stuff, how could you just give it away?"

Tears threaten my mothers eyes. Knew better than to question my mothers decisions, everything she did was for the good of our family, but this time she was crazy. She'd have to be insane to think I would just let complete strangers buy off my grandfathers possessions. He hadn't even been dead any more than 24 hours and she was always having a selling it all.

"Nayeon please understand, he's gone, and we don't have any way of paying off his funeral if we don't get rid of somethings."

My thoughts raced with unbelief, her own father had just passed away and yet here she was pretending like it was just any other Saturday.

"No," I said through clenched teeth, "You're not doing began to collect all the small nick nacks scattered about the wooden tabletop. Gathering as much as I could in my trembling arms.

"I won't let you do this, not to Gramps!"

Rushing into the house with my collection of things I heard her yelling behind me, apologizing to the woman and telling my brother to deal with me. Her voice was but an echo. My world turned as my stomach churned and I did everything in my power to keep my lunch in. Fortunately my room was just ten feet away and as I rushed in I slammed the door behind me, throwing the objects on the bed before locking the door. My brother pounded on the door, voice muffling with the sound of his fist connecting to the old wood.

My ears were clogged with a ringing sound and I dropped unto the floor cradling the old music box I had taken back from the stranger.

"I'm sorry..." I mumble, my voice but a whisper.
