Chef Seungwan

Her laundry always smells like flour, garlic, and grease.             There it was again.  Joohyun whipped her head in the opposite direction.  The scent was frustratingly elusive yet so obviously… there!  She turned her head towards the open door and huffed, “Seungwan!  You left dirty clothes in the bedroom!”             Joohyun felt her heart thump twice in her chest before her bushy-haired girlfriend peered curiously into the room.  She always found herself getting lost in Seungwan’s wide eyes, that encompassed a rich sense of adventure and in the soul that was too good for the world.  She watched as those tender orbs circled the room before blending into her own gaze.  Normally, Joohyun would have melted at the emotion that spilled, but this was not one of those moments.  Joohyun clicked her tongue as Seungwan held her stare, baffled.             “I don’t…” she began, “I don’t see anything, Joohyun.”             Joohyun’s eyes narrowed.  “Exactly.”             Joohyun spent the next hour searching.  She wasn’t sure exactly what she was looking for, but it was something.  She looked under the bed frame that Seungwan had built herself (because she insisted on that kind of “fun” labor), behind the dresser (that Joohyun had begged Seungwan to simply purchase), even through the desk (that was just, the desk). Her nose twitched with every step to the left, but the left was such a vague direction.  She growled at her reflection in the dresser’s mirror. Meanwhile in the kitchen, Seungwan hummed a delicate tune as she quickly sliced the celery and diced the carrots.  She swayed to the beat of the knife.  “Sweetheart?  You should be resting in bed, you’re sick.”             Joohyun’s forehead peeked from the doorway to their bedroom, just enough so that her eyes were barely visible.  And in an uncharacteristically menacing voice, she whispered, “I can’t rest with the smell of grease tainting my chi.”             “Your what?”             “My chi.”             Seungwan stared at the sliver of skin, still visible from her place behind the kitchen counter.  It remained unmoving.             “Honey, you should really get some r--”             “Aha!”  Joohyun exclaimed, triumphantly raising a dirtied pair of black slacks, “I found it!  Damn you and your dirty clothes, Seungwan!”             “Where was it?”             “Neatly folded in the drawer with your clean work clothes!”             Seungwan buried herself in thought.  Perhaps she had placed them in there without realizing they hadn’t yet been washed.  It was a valid reason, for years ago, Joohyun had come up with an intricate laundry plan that Seungwan couldn’t seem to wrap her mind around.  She opted instead to just let Joohyun handle the tedious details, while she just picked up what was hers near the end of the process.             Joohyun had begun to ferociously throw out every pair of pants Seungwan owned.             “Joohyun, what are you doing?”             “Your dirty pants touched the clean ones, so this is all contaminated now.  I need to go wash these.”             “But honey, I need to leave for work in half an hour.”             “Go ,” Joohyun deadpanned, “no girlfriend of mine is leaving the house smelling like garlic.”             “But I’m a chef,” Seungwan stated; but her voice seemed to fall on deaf ears as Joohyun began the six-hour-long laundry ritual.  “I might actually have to go now.”   She always experiments with food on you, but somehow makes you feel like a love-struck puppy instead of the guinea pig you actually are.             Twenty minutes later, Seungwan stood over Joohyun with a steaming bowl of soup in her hands and a rash forming on her thighs.  The damp slacks made her legs itch, but it would have to do.  The hair-dryer could only do so much for lavender scented pants.             “Be honest with me, okay?”  Seungwan pressed, placing the soup on the nightstand, “I tried something a little different.”             Joohyun waved her hand lazily through the burrow of pillows she had created, “Whatever you make is amazing, Seungwan.”             Seungwan chortled as she slipped through the door, “You really know how sweet-talk a lady, Joohyun.”             There was a moment of distant shuffling before Seungwan came rushing back to the bedroom.  Joohyun’s eyebrows shot up in surprise, only to fall down in amusement when Seungwan’s lips met her temple.  She left as quickly as she had come.  As the door’s slam echoed through the corridors, Joohyun felt the ripples resonate through her heart, that suddenly felt hollow.             With a deep sigh, Joohyun turned to reach for the bowl of soup.  If Seungwan wasn’t here to admire, the least she could do was to savor her creation.  However, it was in that same breath that a smile lit up her weary features; for floating in the center of the soup, was a cluster of  noodles that spelled out, “I love you.”   She never has a phone that works because it always falls into something, but when she does manage to talk, she updates you on the kitchen drama, which is ironically juicy.                        Ring… ring… ring…             “Damn it, Seungwan,” Joohyun cursed.  It was one of those days in which Seungwan’s phone probably fell into a pot of pasta sauce.  She recalled the brief (anxious) time before they had officially began dating.  Those days had been filled with a constant worry tugging at the back of her mind, at the realization that no, Seungwan had not replied to her text in two days; and yes, maybe the chef had gotten bored of her.             After all, what was there to get hooked on?  Seungwan was the type of studious girl who could walk into a room and coax a crowd with a wordless breath.  Joohyun on the other hand was just another face in that mindless mob.  With a simple nine-to-five job as an accountant and a quirky laundry obsession, Joohyun had begun to wonder why Seungwan had given her the time of day in the first place.             It was in the dead of night in which the infamous blonde had appeared at her doorstep with a deep-fried cellphone and a bag full of left overs.              “H-Hey, Joohyun!  Sooyoung accidentally fried my phone, and well, I haven’t had a break at work until now, and I know it’s two in the morning but I was wondering if you would like to have dinner with me?  Andmaybebemygirlfriend?”             “What was that last bit?”             “N-Nothing!”             Joohyun grinned at the memory; Seungwan had confessed at the end of their meal.             Later in the day, as Joohyun hummed herself a lovely tune and ironed every wrinkle visible under her (extra strength) magnifying glass, her phone rang.             “Hello?”             “Joohyun, hello!  What a lovely surprise, have you finally decided to date me instead?”             She chuckled into the line, “If I remember correctly, you called me, Seulgi.”             “Still no date?  Darn.  I refuse to believe that that clumsy hamster of a chef out-charmed the Kang Seulgi.”             Muffled in the background buzz, Joohyun caught the screeching of her girlfriend approaching, “Seulgi, stop flirting with my girlfriend!  Stop!”             To which Seulgi replied, “I’m not flirting, I’m just admiring.”             There was a noise that resembled something between a screeching seagull and Sooyoung’s ugly crying before the line emerged clear once more.  “Sweetheart?”             “Hey, Seungwan, what happened to your phone?”             “Yeri accidentally gave it away in a to-go order,” she sighed; Joohyun could sense the white flag in the dips of her tone.             She chuckled in shock, “You’re kidding.”             “I wish I was,” she groaned, “but listen, apparently there’s tension going on between So
