Sungyeol and Myungsoo have been friends since elementary school and both their parents are good friends. During their first year of high school, their parents allowed them to share a two-bedroom apartment in Seoul because it would be closer to their school. Sungyeol couldn’t have been happier because he really didn’t like their old town and he wanted freedom from his family…well, that and something else. You see, Sungyeol had been crushing on his best friend since middle school, unbeknownst to the other boy of course.

They’re now in their last year of high school and their friendship is still standing strong. Today, Dec. 24, 2010, the last day before winter break and Sungyeol decides that we would finally confess to Myungsoo tomorrow, on Christmas day. However, something happened before he had a chance to.

-Nearly a year later, a few days before Christmas 2011-

“Myungsoo, hurry up!” Sungyeol dragged Myungsoo into the gift shop, his arms around the latter’s shoulders.

“Aish! You can’t do anything without me, can you?” Myungsoo playfully groaned.

“Of course. You know me so well. Haha” Sungyeol replied, “Now, help me pick out what to get for my secret santa.” Yes, they’re doing secret santa with their friends this year since they can’t afford to buy gifts for everyone. Myungsoo already bought his gift a few weeks ago, but Sungyeol still have no idea what to get his. He has never been good with picking out gifts.

“How about this?” Myungsoo held up a mug with kits to make hot chocolate.

“Nah, that’s too plain” Sungyeol shook his head and walked over to a different section of the shop as he grabbed onto Myungsoo’s hand.

“This! I think this would be perfect. What do you think?” Sungyeol picked up a black music box with an engraved picture of a christmas tree and presents and a teddy bear in santa clothes. Sungyeol opened it up to listen to the tune (music). Myungsoo couldn’t help but notice the familiar tune. “It’s so beautiful, the music I mean.” Sungyeol smiled.

“Yea, I think that should do it” Myungsoo nodded.

After Sungyeol paid the cashier, both the boys headed to a nearly café for brunch. Sungyeol ordered his favorite drink, you guessed it, Americano. Myungsoo ordered strawberry smoothie and a slice of cake for them to share.

“Can you believe it? We’re already half way done with our first year of college” Sungyeol took a sip of his coffee.

“Time sure flies huh?” Myungsoo gazed out the window of the café.

“Sure does. I’m glad we’re attending the same college. It would feel so weird if we didn’t” Sungyeol chuckled as he thought about the past. He and Myungsoo have never been away from each other for more than a day since they’ve known each other. They were so close and so were their parents. Being together just seemed so natural to them.

“Why is that?” Myungsoo asked curiously as he took a bite of the cake and fed Sungyeol some.

“Because we’ve always been together.” Sungyeol simply answered after taking a bite of what Myungsoo offered.

“Yea, I suppose so.” Myungsoo wiped the cake’s frosting that was smudged on Sungyeol’s cheek with a napkin making Sungyeol flinch.

“Geez, you eat like a kid” Myungsoo snickered and Sungyeol pouted.

“Hey, promise me we’ll always be together even if you meet new people” Sungyeol suddenly said as he stuck out his pinky.

“I promise” Myungsoo smiled, hooking his pinky with Sungyeol’s.

-Christmas day-

Dongwoo, Sungjong, Sunggyu, Hoya, and Woohyun were getting themselves comfortable in Sungyeol and Myungsoo’s apartment as the two boys were changing their clothes. Dongwoo, Sungjong and Hoya were chatting and watching tv in the living room while they set up the tables. Woohyun and Sunggyu are preparing dinner in the kitchen.

Myungsoo was inside his room changing. After he finished, he walked over to his study desk and took out something from the desk drawer. It was a music box, a simple dark blue music box with “Lee Sungyeol” engraved in the middle. It’s been a year already huh? Myungsoo grabbed the box before heading out of his bedroom.

*knock knock*

“Sungyeol, are you finished changing yet?” Myungsoo knocked on Sungyeol’s bedroom door.

“Yea, I’m about to go out.” Sungyeol replied back. A moment later he opened the door and Myungsoo walked in. Myungsoo held the music box in his hand behind his back “Sungyeol I have – “ he didn’t get to finish what he was trying to say because someone cut him off.

“Sungyeol! Myungsoo! We’re about to do gifts exchange, hurry and come over here!” Sunggyu yelled from the living room.

“Coming hyung!” Sungyeol shouted back. Myungsoo quickly put the music box back in his pocket.

“Come on. Let’s go Myungsoo” Sungyeol grabbed Myungsoo’s hand, pulling him to the living room.

---

“Hyung! Hyung! Who did you get???” Sungjong tugged on Sungyeol’s arm causing him to let go of Myungsoo.

“You’ll find out soon~” Sungyeol stuck out his tongue and sat down next to Hoya on the floor with Myungsoo on his left.

“We’re about to exchange our gifts right now so why are you asking him?” Myungsoo retorted earning a frown from Sungjong.

Dongwoo and Sungjong were sitting on the sofa with cushions on their laps. Woohyun and Sunggyu were bringing the food from the kitchen to the table in the living room. Sungjong got up from his seat as soon as Sunggyu set down the drinks.

“Gyu hyung, Myungsoo hyung is being mean to me again~” Sungjong pretended to sob while pointing towards Myungsoo as Sunggyu patted his head. Myungsoo just stuck out his tongue before turning his attention back to Sungyeol and Hoya.

“Yah! Lee Sungjong! Get away from Sunggyu hyung” Woohyun pried Sungjong off of Sunggyu.

“Aww, someone’s jealous~” Dongwoo chimed in, nudging the two love birds.

“Ew, don’t make me vomit” Myungsoo looked at them with a disapproving look.

“Anyways…can we move on with the secret santa thing?” Hoya voiced out after silently watching his friends mess around on the side.

“Let’s go in clock-wise order” Sungyeol suggested, “so we’ll start from Myungsoo” he continued.

Myungsoo handed his gift to Sunggyu and everyone else followed. Dongwoo > Woohyun, Sungjong > Sungyeol, Sunggyu > Dongwoo, Woohyun > Myungsoo, Hoya > Sungjong, and Sungyeol > Hoya. The boys opened their presents and they all seemed quite happy with what they got. Everyone was happily eating and chatting away, it was something they haven’t been able to do because of all the stress and cramming for final exams.

It’s almost midnight when the boys decided to go home. Dongwoo volunteered to drop Sungjong off at home because he lived a bit too far to walk home and it’s too late to catch a bus. Woohyun and Sunggyu left together since they share an apartment. Hoya was the last one to leave because he was helping Sungyeol and Myungsoo clean. Well, that wasn’t the only reason…

Sungyeol was washing the dishes by the sink, while Myungsoo was sweeping the floor of the living room. All of a sudden Sungyeol felt a pair of hands snaking around his waist; he didn’t need turn around to know who it was.

“Hey, I’ve got something for you” Hoya rested his head on Sungyeol’s shoulder as he whispered into his ears.

“What is it?” Sungyeol turned his face, only to have his cheek meet with Hoya’s lips.

“That wasn’t the surprise, was it?” Sungyeol blushed.

“Of course not, silly” Hoya chuckled.

Sungyeol finished washing the dishes and turned himself completely around, still in Hoya’s embrace. Hoya gave him a light peck on the lips before pulling away and dug his hand into his jeans pocket. Sungyeol was a little confused. “So what is it that you have for me?” he cutely asked, tilting his head to one side. Hoya pulled out a box from his pocket and held it in front of Sungyeol. “Open it.”

Inside the box were two silver rings with engraving of their initials ‘H ♥ S’. Sungyeol’s eyes glistened at the sight.

“They’re beautiful” Sungyeol kept staring at them. Hoya put one of the rings on his ring finger and the other on Sungyeol’s before kissing it. Hoya glanced at the clock that hung above the sink before turning his gaze back to the boy in front of him.

“It’s December 26. Do you remember what day it is?” he asked as he lifted Sungyeol’s chin up so the boy could look at him.

After a moment of thinking, Sungyeol suddenly remembers. “Our one year anniversary” Sungyeol smiled, how could he have forgotten?

“Ahem..” Myungsoo, who have been finished sweeping the floor for a while now, interrupted.

“Did you need something?” Sungyeol asked.

“Uhh…I kind of need to dump the dust pan in that trashcan next to you.” Myungsoo stated blankly, gesturing his finger to the trashcan where Hoya and Sungyeol had been blocking.

“Oh, sorry Myungsoo.” Hoya moved over to the living room, not forgetting to pull Sungyeol with him. Myungsoo quietly groaned, a little frustrated with the two love birds.

Hoya’s arms found its way around Sungyeol’s waist again. He sat on the sofa, pulling Sungyeol to sit on his lap and tightening his grip on the boy’s hips. Their faces only a few inches away. Hoya leaned in slightly to give Sungyeol a soft kiss on his lips. Sungyeol was blushing furiously, but quickly kissed him back. Hoya pulled back and whispered “I love you, Sungyeol.” “I love you too” Sungyeol responded as he places his arms around Hoya’s neck and pulled him in for another kiss. Myungsoo watched them from the kitchen frustrated, his hands clenched into tight fists.

“I’m going to bed” Myungsoo blurted out before heading to the bathroom to wash up. There was no response. It didn’t seem like the two boys in the living room paid any attention to him though, as they were too busy making out.

---

Myungsoo washed his face and brushed his teeth before stepping into the shower to let the warm water run down his body. After half an hour he came back out. The lights are off, I guess he left. Myungsoo shrugged before sauntering to his bedroom and closing the door behind him. He changed into his pajamas, getting ready to sleep.

*knock knock*

“Myungsoo, are you asleep yet?” Sungyeol knocked from the other side of the door.

“Yea…”

“Liar, you’re obviously awake if you responded”

“Ok, well I’m about to sleep. What do you need?” Myungsoo opened the door to let Sungyeol in.

“Well, since it’s Christmas..err, not anymore now…anyways, I just want to say thank you for coming with me to pick out the gift the other day. I’m really thankful I have a friend like you” friend huh…? Myungsoo couldn’t help the slight ache in his heart after hearing that word. “We’ve been friends for so long; I’d be so lost without you. We’re always going to be best friends forever, right?” Sungyeol beamed and pulled Myungsoo into a hug. “uh..yea…of course!” Myungsoo hesitantly replied before hugging him back. Sungyeol was the first one to pull away.

“Well, that’s all I wanted to say. Heh” Sungyeol scratched the back of his head.

“Haha, you’re so weird sometimes. Go to sleep, it’s almost 2 am” Myungsoo shoved Sungyeol out of his room.

“night Myungsoo~!” Sungyeol skipped to his bedroom. Myungsoo couldn’t help but smile at the sight.

“night Sungyeol” Myungsoo said as he closes his door.

-Sungyeol’s room-

I can’t believe it’s been a year already.

-FLASHBACK-

*Sungyeol’s POV*

Dec. 24, 2010

This is it! I’m finally going to confess to Myungsoo on Christmas day. Sungyeol thought to himself as he strolled down the school’s corridor to his locker.

“Sungyeol!” Sungyeol whips his head to find the source of the voice.

“Oh, hey Hoya. What’s up?” Sungyeol stopped in front of a classroom as Hoya approaches him.

“Can you come with me for a moment? I have something to ask you” Hoya had one hand in his pocket while the other scratching his head.

“Sure” Sungyeol was slightly puzzled, but followed Hoya anyways.

They both walked to the back of the school’s gym.

“What is it?” Sungyeol asked.

“Would you…uh…go out with me?” Hoya looked at Sungyeol, who is now quite surprised.

“Where is this coming from?” Sungyeol asked completely confused.

“I’ve liked you for a while now, and this is our last year in high school. I figured I should ask you now since I don’t know if we’ll be going to the same college after this.”

“Hoya…” after a moment of silent Sungyeol started, but he was cut off by Hoya “you don’t have to answer me right now. You can answer me on Sunday when all of us get together at your apartment” with that, Hoya quickly walked off leaving Sungyeol dumbfounded.

What the heck was that? Hoya likes me? I’m so confused. I like Hoya, but not that way though. How do I reject him without hurting him? Ugh! This is frustrating…maybe Myungsoo can help? Speaking of which, I was supposed to meet him after going to my locker. Crap! Sungyeol sprinted to his locker to drop off his books before heading to find Myungsoo.

“Myungsoo~! Sorry I took so long, I..uh..got a little caught up in something” Sungyeol apologized as soon as he saw Myungsoo leaning by his locker.

“Uh huh..” Myungsoo replied nonchalantly. The two walked home together.

“Hey, um…Hoya confessed to me today” Sungyeol glanced at Myungsoo who just blankly stared at the road in front of them.

“And…?” Myungsoo answered, still looking straight in front of him.

“Well, he said he’ll give me till Sunday to answer him. But –“ Sungyeol was trying to tell Myungsoo but he got cut off.

By now, Myungsoo had stopped walking and looked at Sungyeol, “Look, if you want to date him then date him. It’s really none of my business what you do.” Sungyeol felt hurt, he couldn’t believe what his best friend and crush is saying.

“Do you really mean that?” Sungyeol wanted confirmation. He wanted to know if he should continue.

“Yea. Hoya isn’t a bad guy, if you want to date him then go ahead. I don’t understand why you have to tell me this” Myungsoo was oblivious of the hurt in Sungyeol’s eyes. I knew it was my wishful thinking. Of course Myungsoo only thought of me as a friend, all those time he said “I love you”, they really were meant as jokes. Sungyeol mentally slapped himself. Alright, I guess it really is time for me to move on. After all these years of loving youand countless drops of silent tears, I’m finally going to give it up. I love you Myungsoo, but I guess we could never be anything more than best friends.

“Alright. I guess you’re right Myungsoo.” Sungyeol bitterly chuckled. The two just walked in silence after that.

-END FLASHBACK-

It’s been a year since Sungyeol finally decided to give up his first love. Although he didn’t truly love Hoya at first, his feelings for him gradually grew. Hoya was sweet and caring – probably the best boyfriend anyone can have.I know I took the easier path. I’m sorry Hoya, for going to you because I didn’t want to get hurt. But I’m glad I did because I really did grow to love you. This is a little secret that Hoya doesn’t and will never know. I’m sorry again for keeping another secret, no matter how much I love you, I know that Myungsoo will always have that one special spot in my heart. Sungyeol lifted his hand up to stare at the couple ring Hoya had given him. He brought the ring to his lips and smiled as his eyes began to close. I love you and thank you.

---

-Myungsoo’s bedroom-

Myungsoo took the music box out from the pocket of his dirty clothes and walked over to his bed and set the music box on the side table. He lifted the lid open (music); it had the exact same tune as the one that Sungyeol had given to Hoya. Myungsoo slides the compartment door to reveal a silver necklace with an engraved heart pendant that read “Be Mine”…Myungsoo had bought this a year ago. This was supposed to be for him, for his Sungyeol. It’s been one year since Myungsoo let the one person he loved most get away from him… I’ve let my chance slipped by because I was stupid. I was angry and I guess jealous because I caught you and Hoya together at the back of the gym. I was too confident, I thought you’d come to me. I didn’t think you would actually listen to my thoughtless words and go to him …I thought I was being cool, but I was wrong. I should’ve held you back. But now it’s too late…

If only I had held you back that day…if only…what would have happened to us? Would I be where Hoya hyung is now? Myungsoo sighed as he laid on his bed, an arm over his forehead reminiscing old memories of him and Sungyeol together and his lost chance at confessing. It’s been a year and I still love you, Lee Sungyeol…always

Myungsoo could feel drops of tears slowly dripping from his eyes, but he didn’t bother wiping them away. Instead, he just closed his eyes and let the sound from the music box comfort his aching heart as he drifts off to sleep…it’s alright, although Sungyeol doesn’t love me, at least he’s still here and that’s all that matter..

---------------

A/N: how is it? was it any good? was it really bad? =X

that took me 7 hours to finish. I wanted to get this done earlier but I have a really hard time trying to put my thoughts into words. I had so many ideas in my head, but i couldn't put everything into writing >.<

I'm a hardcore MyungYeol shipper, but I'm mainly writing this as a way to get back at Myungsoo for hurting Sungyeol in so many fanfics (my sister thinks i'm crazy). LOL.

ah, almost forgot. here's the original song+translation of the song from the music box, if anyone is interested. My sister helped me searched for it, I thought it fit perfectly with the story. >> Lee Minho - My Everything <<
