Bellum Memoriarum

Description

There is a common overlap between drugs, wars, and memories; they cause addiction and delusion both too sweet and too lethal for consciousness to handle.

Memories are Yoona’s sole stimulant to fight and to seek the light of her wife’s disappearance. Years of loss and longing, however, have rendered memories to be nothing but bland drugs to appease her gaping wounds. When all that sweet unreality fades, acidic reality will corrode her spirit bone marrow deep.

Only two things she all has: Heart that is too weak, Body that is too tired.

Those aren’t what a hero of the story should have, aren’t they?

But again, Yoona is no hero. Just a fool lost in a war of memories.

1st Lt. Im Yoona

Age: 33
DOB: 30 May
Occupation: Logistics Officer of 4th Engineer Batallion, 1103 Engineer Group, Capital Defense Command
Status: On Duty

Yoona is what is unexpected from a soldier; shy, soft-spoken and somehow meek. Despite her unlikely appearance, she's surprisingly one of the Sappers, the elite engineer-soldiers whose might and prestige only can be rivaled by Rangers and Special Force.

By the age of 24, she married Kwon Yuri. Not yet two years of their marriage, however, she had to lose her wife as she was confirmed MIA after departing to a mission. Seven years she has endured, faithfully waiting and looking for any possible clues that might tell about Yuri's whereabouts.

Yoona is just another human. Slowly but sure she starts to lose hope, trying to embrace the possibility of her wife being dead or just simply willl never be founded. Yet the memories she cherishes somehow desperately persuaded her to believe that Yuri is still there, somewhere.

Kwon Yuri

Age : presumably 34
DOB: 5 December
Occupation: Interpol officer at South Korea ICPO National Bureau

Status: Missing In Action

Yuri could be considered a seasoned veteran even in her early years at Interpol. Interpol officers isn't expected to dive into action like special police officers or agents would, for their duty lies mainly for liaison, but her missions had got her diving into the fray more than she could remember.

Charming and glazed with elegant appeal, it'd really easy for her to get any man or woman, yet she chose the awkward army officer Im Yoona after merely two years of close-knitted friendship and getting tied together in the vow of marriage.

However, she's missing on a mission and unable to be found even after seven years. No trace of her whereabouts is found, even Interpol itself finds her disappearance is below their radar.

A Day

▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄

» "I thought your type is more like Jungkook-ssi…” Yoona mumbled, almost unheard and drowned by hubbubs of busy café in lunchtime. “Broad-shouldered and hardy military men.”

The tan-skinned woman chuckled and waved her hand somehow elegantly. “No, he’s just another guy who fills the ‘Ideal Army Man’ archetype, and it doesn’t interest me,” she hummed.

The doe-eyed army officer gave a slight flustered look. “Um…Does that mean you’re interested in me?” came more like a pensive squeak that outlined her blushing cheeks.

“You don’t look like the type who wants to join the armed forces…” she piped, stirring slowly her hazelnut macchiato.

“You’re spot on.”

“So why you become a soldier then?”

“I used to dream to be an actress. I applied for Theatre Major at Dongguk University, but sadly I don’t get the chance to pass.”

The woman in leather jacket raised her eyebrows, clearly interested with the revelation of Yoona’s background.

“My mother passed away when I was young and my father is on the prison for a life sentence for the crime he never did. No relatives wanted to take me in and I was placed at an orphanage.” Yoona paused for a sip on her matcha latte.  “That’s why I enrolled to military academy. As a cadet, I already have my own wages even when I’m still at my education. So I don’t need to worry about tuition fees or burdening the orphanage in case I didn’t get any scholarship or income for my financial needs. And going to the academy also has guaranteed me a career after graduation. In short, my life is already on an easy track.”

“But isn’t it harder to pass the military academy’s entrance tests?”

“Yeah…” the female in uniform scratched her nape. “I barely passed the physical aptitude test, and somehow my bowlegs didn’t make me fail to pass the medical checkup. It’s not a problem anyway, not that I want to be the brawny infantryman or joining Special Ops who has to be perfectly fit in physique.”

“So that’s why you joined the geekier Engineer branch …”

“From the test result, I actually can choose between Engineer or Signal branch. Well, engineering didn’t really interest me. And in Signal branch there’s an opportunity to be Public Media Relations staff that still allow me to take parts for media broadcast and such, something quite related with my passion as an actress. But I think I filled the form the wrong way or the database was mixed up that I ended up in Engineer branch.”

The doe-eyed woman mimed a rather quick expression of dismay as she finished her story. There was a sort of sympathy the tan-skinned woman felt for having life chose not to your preferences. A different look to the circumstance, however, made her let out a warm chuckle.

“If you’ve filled your form correctly, you might have never had the chance to meet me,” she hummed, raking few strands of hair behind her left ear. “This day wouldn’t have happened.”

“You’re not wrong,” Yoona chimed with a soft smile and even softer blush.

   Author'sNote

» Let’s discusss a bit about chapter zero, eh?  Health condition requirements to enter Military Academy are actually quite vague (because most believe some health examiners purposely don’t let candidate pass unless you pay bribes to them). However, from my friend who has passed basic military paratroopers training, for military airborne training/paratroopers training candidates shouldn’t have any bone structure deformities, because it might put serious injury when they land after their jump. And we all know Yoona got cute bowlegs (and so am I, but the bend is not really visible. I also got slightly bent backbone. Gah).

Thank you for reading and please accompany me to the end hmm? Chapter One will commence soon, soldiers, so get your spirit high! OORAAAH!
