Nothing Special

Midterms were on their way again, and especially for the senior's it was a week of last minute assignments and tests running in. I mostly stayed at home during Fridays, which usually these days Yuna and I would just hang out.

But I guess she too was busy with her own studies. The only time we ever talk would be that of our homework and that's it. It used to be of random conversations of all kinds of random nonsense but now they limited.

I was about to text her after our last math test when just then I just received a message from saying we should hang out. I didn't need to reply back for my answer.

Yuna and I went to a coffee shop and ordered mocha's and a slice from the special of the day. "Will you be doing anything for the holidays?"

I shook my head. "We're probably just going to stay home, like how we always do." I say, cutting a piece and putting it into my mouth. The sweetness of the chocolate cake cut through my bitter coffee taste buds and remained.

"Wow, I'm jealous. at least you get to stay home – I’m going back to Macao with my father again." she exasperated that last sentence, and with effect she rolled her eyes in the midst of it. Yuna's dad was paid well off and able to afford such huge vacations like these. Whereas for my family, you can say they were average; we weren't too poor neither rich.

Our hang out ended early for her father suddenly called in and sternly told her to come back home early to pack. I said a quick farewell and told her to take lots of pictures, for which in return she promised to bring back a souvenir of some sort.

I was glad I came home that same night right before the snowfall had hit, for it gradually became an overnight storm. I got worried because coming back to my house there was no one there, which my mom and dad would have been done work by now.

I was warming up some rice in the cooker when I got a call from my cell phone. it was my dad. "Oh, hi dad. I just came home now."

"Oh, alright. I'm glad you came home safe. Listen, the storm is heavy out there which means I'm going to be stuck at the office for a while. Your mother also sent me a text message saying she too would be staying behind work.

"Don't wait for us to eat, Aeri. Hopefully we'll get back soon." I managed to boil some water in a pot, good enough to cook my ramen.

"Arasso, you both stay safe as well. Love you." as soon as I hung up I then got the text message from my mom saying the same thing my dad said, about her staying behind work until the storm resides. I sighed, putting the phone down and turning off the stove, bringing it where I already laid my utensils and bowl of steaming rice.

I the T.V and watched the entertainment section, laughing off with the gag sitcom. I then forgot that Yuna gave me a copy of my favorite show we used to watch when we were kids (The whole season of Cardcaptor Sakura!) and began to play that instead.

I made it to the 4th episode when I realized it was getting late. I put my dishes and washed them in the sink and grabbed my blanket. Before heading up the stairs I looked out the window of the kitchen. It was dark, but I had a feeling that it was still snowing out.

It was 11 at night. I stayed awake until probably 1, when I heard the front door open with a click and hearing hushed voice of my parents.

* * *

With the snow piled up in the streets from the storm luckily it wouldn't stay very long until the new week starts again. But least to say that I had a very interesting weekend.

I decided to get some groceries at the near market for lunch, because I was a) hungry for some melon bread and b) I also wanted to get out after being stuck in my room all day as well.

"Don't forget your scarf," my mom called over her shoulder as she was cooking some broccoli in the boiling water.

"Yes, I know." I replied, grabbing my boots and heading out. The air was chilly, but not cold enough that it would make me freeze to death. I walked across the sidewalk now covered in white, my feet making soft crunching noise of the impact of the snow.

I entered the convenient store and gathered what I needed, paid for it, and headed out. I passed by a flower shop when I quickly glanced in the window to see a familiar figure. When they turned around I was caught staring and stood up straighter in posture as they walked out.

"Aeri?" Jungkook looked at me with surprised eyes.

"Oh, hey." I waved a small hand in the air, the same one in which I was holding my groceries. I then looked down at his own hands, holding a bouquet of flowers. Noticing that I was looking he caught my stare and chuckled, holding up the flowers more upwards.

"Ah, these aren't for you by the way." I scoffed, already pulling a joke on me.

"Gee, thanks. I'm so relieved." I rolled my eyes, and a small smile came on his lips. I seriously asked him why he bought these flowers, as his response was rather vague. "I'm going somewhere, actually." he mumbled. I heard along the lines of meeting someone as well, and out of the blue he offered if I wanted to come. Frankly I wasn't planning to, but I did anyway. Somehow we made it at the end of the street at a small area where there was a worn out building along the curb.

Upon entering I followed right behind him to hear the yells of little kids coming from the other room and Jungkook greeted the woman at the front of the office.

"Aeri? Are you okay?" he sensed just how clingy I became, because being in a place like this makes me all tensed. I only nodded, rather feverishly.

"Y-yeah, sorry." I mumbled. "I-I'm just not familiar with this place." understanding he squeezed my hand in assurance, but kept holding it. I was at first flustered by the skinship; making me blush and my heart racing. But it soon subsided when he let go of it as we entered into a small room, labeled 'The Music Room'.

The first thing I noticed was that the room was filled with musical notes. From the chalkboard to the decorations hanging down the ceiling it was all covered. By the piano all I saw was the top head of someone, but I'm not so sure.

Out of no where Jungkook stepped forward and whistled a high pitch. Soon the head pivoted to the side and I noticed it was a little girl. She smiled brightly in showing a toothy grin. "Oppa!"

He hugged her tightly back, then easing just enough to ruffle her short auburn hair.

"How's my little princess doing?" he cooed.

"I missed you oppa! I've been working on my piece for a long time, and I wanted to show you last week but you never showed up! You hardly do now." she pouted, crossing her arms.

"Mianhe, Yunhee. I was really busy with school. To make up for it, I brought you something." he took out the bouquet of flowers from his back and handed it over. She smiled, thanking him with another hug.

"These are very pretty." looking up quickly she met eyes with me and she was startled; for her eyes were briefly widened. But soon she relaxed and replaced with an expression of curiosity; lips pursed. "Oppa, who is this?"

"Ah - this is Aeri. She's a friend of mine. Aeri, this is Yunhee." I bowed slightly in respect, as so did she. Again she showed her toothy grin.

“You're very pretty. I can see why Jungkook oppa is very close with you.” I couldn't help but chuckle, and Jungkook hearing that immediately flushed and scolded her gently for saying such things. Yunhee just giggled and ran off out the door, taking the bouquet with her. The latter sighed and shook his head, giving an apology.

“She's the kind to blurt out random things without thinking.” he chided.

“Don't worry about it. I know how little kids are.” we shared an even laugh. Jungkook told me that his mom works at this place, which I now realized myself was a daycare. He explained that from time to time he would come with her and upon that he ended up meeting Yunhee- a girl who was a regular during the weekdays.

Just then the door opened and a woman's head peeked in. “Oh?” her eyes landed on Jungkook and she entered. “there you are. I'm done my shift.”

“Mm, okay Umma.” Jungkook got up from his seat, as did I. “did you see Yunhee by the way?”

Jungkook's mother nodded. “She was holding a bouquet and told me you gave it to her. That is really nice of you.” when her eyes landed on me immediately I was caught in a stare. Clearing my throat, I bowed.

“Hello, I'm Park Aeri. I'm a friend of Jungkook's at school.” soon her expression changed as her eyebrows lifted in surprise, eyes glint with curiosity.

“So you're Mrs. Park's daughter? Oh my goodness!” gushing she rushed over and squeezed me in an embrace. I looked at Jungkook who was behind his mother's back, me mouthing what was going on. Frankly he shrugged, looking just as clueless. When we retracted she apologized for the sudden behavior and explained that she used to be very close friends with my mom back in college. Even I, my mom never told me such things about her past college life as much. Jungkook's mom, Mrs. Jeon, offered me a ride home then. I can tell she was more excited to see her old friend.

When I rang the doorbell I quickly apologized to them for staying out longer than I intended to. Their upset faces were soon gone when my mom happily saw Mrs. Jeon and they hugged each other tight at the door. My dad grabbed the groceries from my hand and let them inside, along with Jungkook.

It was a messy introduction: first Jungkook introduced himself to my parents, then his mom did to my dad. Needless to say it was odd to hear them converse about their old college days that Jungkook and I quietly escaped into the main room and waited until they were finished. My dad offered him to drink or eat, but he refused. Soon after 30 minutes or so it was time for them to leave. I asked dad if he knew about Mrs. Jeon, to which he just shrugged and said 'not really, no'. Then I went to mom and she gave a soft expression. “I met with her again when I was pregnant with you, and at the time she was going to Buk Du. I didn't expect her to come back to Seoul though.”

“Did you not tell her about dad?” I knew that both of them – well now Jungkook's mom too – went to the same college.

She shook her head. “I didn't want to embarrass her. But by the looks of it, I think she knows.” then she laughed. I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion.

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“I mean; your father was Mrs. Jeon's first crush. What a crazy turn of life, isn't it?” I couldn't help but nod numb, gazing down at the ground. Crazy indeed.
