I'm Straight

I'm Straight

“I might not be…uh…straight?” Jonghyun murmured. Kibum looked up from the jacket he was sewing, brows arched curiously. “Really?” the latter laughed.

Jonghyun smiled and nodded, moving closer to Kibum to rest his chin on his shoulder, basking in the younger’s perfume, a scent which he has easily grown accustomed to.

Kibum stopped what he was doing and looked over his shoulder, seeing how Jonghyun has relaxed, his eyes closed and seemingly very unburdened. Kibum smiled, his heart warming at the sight of Jonghyun so relaxed at the fact that he’s finally out to someone.

Jonghyun’s uality wasn’t a surprise to Kibum though. The surprise was the fact that Jonghyun was saying these words after they’ve been together for 7 months.

**********

“I’m straight” Jonghyun said in the midst of his study session with Kibum. The latter looked up, brows arched curiously and seriously. “Okay? And I’m not. Can we get on with the homework?”

Kibum said those words but really inside he was sad as heck.

He met Jonghyun in the library one morning while he was buried deep in math homework.

“You’re good at this.” Jonghyun whispered, disrupting Kibum. The latter pretended to be mad but inside, he didn’t mind a cute guy disrupting him from homework which he didn’t even want to do.

“Can you teach me?” Jonghyun asked later on, disrupting Kibum once again.

Jonghyun was terrible at math, while Kibum was really good at it. They clicked right away and easily became friends, but Kibum, not being straight, easily developed a crush as well. He later on learned that Jonghyun was actually a year older but was behind on his math lessons.

They weren’t exactly friends but they were pretty close. They slowly formed a schedule of their ‘library time’ in which Kibum helps Jonghyun with his math while he does his own thing.

At the same time they studied, they flirted.

In Kibum’s defense, it was mostly Jonghyun who started the flirting to distract both of them from their homework, but the guy was cute so Kibum let it go most of the time.

When Kibum actually started getting comfortable with Jonghyun, that’s when he came out to him as gay. All Jonghyun said about it was “Okay. Cool.” which honestly was a burden lifted off his shoulders.

Despite that, Jonghyun continued flirting and over time skinship was thrown into the mix. It confused the hell out of Kibum but he went along because he was enjoying it.

So when once again Jonghyun reminded him that he was, as he said, straight, it made Kibum question their relationship and what they’ve been doing, but really he just wanted to live in the moment.

“Stop staring and get back to your homework.” Kibum murmured, knowing well that Jonghyun was trying to distract him by the poking he felt on his leg.

**********

“My friend is having a party this friday. He rented out a whole club and stuff. Do you want to come?” Jonghyun asked as soon as he took his seat beside Kibum who was already buried in school work like he usually is when Jonghyun gets to the library.

Kibum looks up, eyes hidden behind his bangs. “Would I be safe with someone like you?” the latter joked.

Jonghyun rolled his eyes and faked a laugh. “Don’t you trust me?” the older carefully fixed Kibum’s hair, running his hands through the younger’s hair so that he can see his eyes.

Kibum moved his head away and scoffed. He hated when people touched his hair - Jonghyun knew that - but what he didn’t know was that he was an exception. Kibum actually loved it when Jonghyun played with his hair.

“I don’t trust drunk Jonghyun.” Kibum gave up on trying to do school work for the time being, opting to talk to the boy seated beside him.

“Oh please, Kibum, You haven’t seen drunk Jonghyun yet. He’s actually very trustworthy!”

“Well I don’t trust drunk me either. So how are we going to do this?” Kibum smiled at Jonghyun’s persistence to make him go to this party.

“That’s why I want to bring you. I want to meet drunk Kibum too.” Jonghyun smirked playfully, which earned him a hit on the back of his head.

“Drunk Kibum is probably very interesting.” Jonghyun laughed quietly, finally opening his books and starting on his homework.

“If you finish your homework before me today then sure, I’ll come.” Kibum rolled his eyes as he turned back to his books, knowing that he was going to finish his homework before Jonghyun does.

He didn’t.

**********

Friday rolled around soon enough and Kibum had already planned out what to wear.

Graphic tee, army green jacket, ripped jeans and doc martens. No revealing clothes to wear to the club today. It was also one of the rare events in which he’d wear eyeliner; not too thick but enough that people would notice he did something.

Jonghyun came at 6pm, just as he said he would the day before.

He stood at the doorway of Kibum’s apartment for a few moments, mouth slightly agape as he took in Kibum’s entire look.

“Earth to Jonghyun?” Kibum snapped once he started feeling self-conscious.

“Hm? Yeah. You look really good. Do you usually go clubbing?” Jonghyun joked as if he wasn’t staring just a few minutes ago.

“Used to go clubbing during weekends before I started college.” Kibum answered anyways, feeling nostalgic of the days when he spent the weekends out with friends instead of being buried in school work.

When they got to the club, Kibum had noticed Jonghyun’s fidgeting and the rare silence between them, especially since they weren’t in the library.

“You’re quiet.” Kibum pointed out.

“Well… I don’t go to clubs very often.” Jonghyun admitted sheepishly.

Kibum just laughed and put an arm around Jonghyun. “You’re with me, Jjong. We’ll be fine.”

“What are you? King of the club or something?” Jonghyun joked as they entered the club.

“No! But I do know how to handle myself!” Kibum shouted through the music blaring.

The latter went straight for the bar, Jonghyun following suit. He was older but he was actually a bit lost.

“Hey Jinki! Two bottles of beer please!” Kibum shouted. The fact that the latter knew the bartender’s name made Jonghyun spin his seat to see who this Jinki was.

“How do you know him?” Jonghyun asked as they were handed their beers.

“Thanks hyung!” Kibum said before turning to Jonghyun. “Friend. Old love interest. I told you! I used to go clubbing a lot!”

Jonghyun simply nodded and drank his beer.

The two didn’t do much other than drink and talk - or flirted. Kibum had tried to get Jonghyun out of his seat and to the dance floor, but the latter wouldn’t budge and stayed glued to his seat.

“You really won’t dance?” Kibum hiccuped, obviously a bit drunk. Despite that, Jonghyun smiled and shook his head.

The younger rolled his eyes as he emptied his current bottle of beer. “If you won’t dance then I will!”

Kibum left for the dance floor without a second glance and as soon as he was there, Jonghyun kinda regretted not saying yes.

Jonghyun watched Kibum intently and with admiration. He was a good dancer and he was y. Jonghyun easily enjoyed the sight.

It was a few minutes later though, when the song was at its and Jonghyun had a new bottle of beer in his hand, that he no longer enjoyed the sight.

A woman, obviously drunk and obviously used to a club setting, had joined Kibum, her dance moves almost matching the intensity of Kibum’s.

It was usually no problem - seeing a friend dancing with a woman - but this time it had Jonghyun feel a bit unsettled. He couldn’t help but turn around, facing the bar once again as he downed his current bottle of beer.

“You know…he likes you.” a voice came up and Jonghyun was honestly surprised to see the bartender from earlier talking to him.

The bartender - Jinki - smiled as he continued to wipe the wet glasses lined up on the counter. “He still comes over but not to drink or anything. Just to chat with some friends. He talks about a guy he’s had a crush on for quite some time but never told us a name.”

Jonghyun raised an eyebrow in curiousity. “How’d you know it was me then?”

Jinki hummed, seemingly unfazed by the question. “Brown hair, brown eyes, a bit short but muscular. Flirty! - that’s a word that stuck to me.” the bartender laughed at his own remark.

“I’m straight though.” Jonghyun says, still confused at why exactly this person - practically a stranger - was telling him these things.

“I know.” Jinki smiled as he walked away.

Jonghyun was surprised by a hand on his shoulder but immediately relaxed as he heard a voice. “Hey. Let me get one last drink then we can go.”

Jonghyun nodded, getting another drink for himself. If the buzzing in his head wasn’t there though, he’d ask for them to stay longer.

“W-We’re gonna take a…cab home…” Jonghyun struggled to stand straight with Kibum’s full weight against him. He was drunk, but Kibum was more so.

“Geez Kibum…how many drinks did you have…” Jonghyun said as he helped Kibum get into the cab.

“I…don’t know?” Kibum hiccuped as he moved closer to the window, making the distance between him and Jonghyun even bigger.

The cab ride to Kibum’s apartment was quiet, save for the occasional slurring and hiccups from either of them.

“Don’t you want to stay in your bed?” Jonghyun asked as Kibum crashed onto the sofa. The latter groaned a’no’ and buried his head into the throw pillows, making himself comfortable.

Jonghyun sighed as he lifted Kibum’s legs, taking off his shoes first before taking a seat on the other side of the sofa, his legs tangling with Kibum’s.

“Jonghyun!” Kibum screamed and got up abruptly, surprising Jonghyun out of his drunken daze.

“What?”

“Are you sure you’re straight?” Kibum’s words were slurred but Jonghyun understood the question and it caught him off guard.

“Yeah. I’m sure.” Jonghyun tilted his head back, avoiding any eye contact with Kibum.

“Hoooow are you… sure?” Jonghyun could feel Kibum resting his head on his lap and he had to resist the urge to take a peek.

“I don.t know. I just am.”

“Well have you ever kissed a boy?” Kibum got up again, a hand resting on Jonghyun’s thigh which made him just a tad bit uncomfortable.

“Nooo Kibum. Stop asking me… things…” Jonghyun tried to shrug Kibum off, and he would have successfully done it if Kibum didn’t invade his personal space.

“How would you be sure that you were straight if you have never kissed a boy?”

“I’m not gonna kiss you Kibum.” the words slipped through Jonghyun’s mouth.

Kibum raised an eyebrow in curiosity, a smug smile on his face. “Want to try?”

Jonghyun shook his head furiously. “No. I just said I didn’t want to kiss you!”

“Come on, Jonghyun. Let’s experiment!”

“Experiment what?!”

“If you’re really straight!”

“Okay so you kiss me then what? We wouldn’t know anyways.”

Kibum rolled his eyes and pouted. “Come on, Jonghyun. If you enjoyed it then you’re not straight. Besides, you owe it to me.”

Jonghyun couldn’t help but laugh at the younger’s last statement. “Owe it to you? In what way do I owe anything to you, Kibum?”

“You waltz into my life all dream boy and but you’re straight. I deserve one kiss.”

Jonghyun groaned as he slid off the sofa in defeat. “Fine but just one kiss.”

Kibum smiled in triumph as he inched closer. “We’re drunk anyways so you won’t remember.”

“I won’t remember? You’re more drunk than I am, mister. It’s you who won’t remember kissing me.”

Kibum laughed. “You’re mister dream boy, remember? Pretty sure I won’t forget kissing you.”

He didn’t even wait for a reply before leaning in for the kiss.

Both of them remained unmoving, Jonghyun on the floor and Kibum on the sofa giving them a weird position but it didn’t change the fact that Kibum’s heart was beating too fast to be healthy.

Once Kibum had his share of the kiss and was just about to move away, Jonghyun made his move.

The older ran a hand through Kibum’s hair and rested it on the back of his neck, pulling him in just a bit closer.

Kibum realized he made a mistake by moving in closer as he fell off the sofa, landing face first against Jonghyun’s thighs. Both were left laughing, still drunk but also in a bit of a daze from the kiss they had just shared.

“So? Did you enjoy it?” Kibum asked, all smiles as he made himself comfy on the floor.

Jonghyun hummed in thought but he was smiling as well. “I might’ve enjoyed only because it was you.”

Kibum laughed as he got up and faced Jonghyun, his chin resting on the back of his hand.

“So you’re not straight for me?”

Jonghyun scoffed and gently pushed Kibum away. “Shut up, Kibum. I am straight.”

Kibum laughed again. He was so happy and seemed so free that it made Jonghyun effortlessly happy as well.

“Say whatever you want, Jonghyun.”

**********

“I might not be…uh…straight?” Jonghyun murmured. Kibum looked up from the jacket he was sewing, brows arched curiously. “Really?” the latter laughed.

For the 7 months that they’ve been together, Jonghyun had been in the closet. It was a bit hard but Kibum understood the fact that Jonghyun needed to come to terms with himself first before coming out.

“I’m straight.” were words Kibum heard all the time - whether they were making out or doing homework or even just eating lunch, Jonghyun never failed to remind him. Despite that, they did anything and everything boyfriends do and when Kibum asked if they were dating, the older would just smile and change the topic.

“Can I finally say I love you?” Kibum asked as he intertwined his fingers with Jonghyun’s. The latter laughed and shook his head. “I want to say it first.”

Kibum smiled and nodded.

The two sat in silence for a few moments, Jonghyun rubbing his fingers against Kibum’s palm and his chin resting on the younger’s shoulder.

“I love you.” Jonghyun whispered, planting a kiss on Kibum’s cheek.

“Now go do your homework otherwise you’d stress out again and you stressing out stresses me out.” Jonghyun laughed as he let go of Kibum to let him go back to his work.

“So you’re really not straight?” Kibum asked again, laughing as he picked up the forgotten jacket and his sewing materials. Jonghyun simply smiled as he flipped through his math book, staring at numbers he still didn’t understand. It was okay though because Kibum was there to help.

Chapter 1: Chapter 1: I know Jonghyun's struggle to come out.gosh its a very confusing thing. So realistic. Nice little one shot.
I also hate it when ppl totouch my hair, but except when my girl does it. That moment really is very awkward. XD

Chapter 1: I agree with Rellamellow, very nicely written. It must be hard to just "know" that you're one way when everything inside you is pointing you another. So glad that Key could see the inner struggle Jonghyun was going through and patient enough to stay by his man!

Chapter 1: I loved how realistic this was, oh my god. In a lot of fanfics, people come to terms with their uality /so/ quickly and I loved how this didn't happen here. Love is confusing, ualities are confusing. Thank you for writing a fic that shows that. <33
