FINAL

Been Here All Along

The first time Kris met Kyungsoo, he was rendered speechless.

No, he really was speechless.

He was a third year exchange student in SM University, finally going to his new dorm room back from his orientation with the other exchange students. His newfound friend, Luhan, thought it would be great to have Kris wear a sign around his neck as a way to let people know he was new transfer student from another country.

"Hi. My name is Nerdfan. (which Kris had crossed out to say Kris instead) I can't speak or understand Korean fluently yet but I want to be your friend," the poster read, full of glitters, hearts, and stars on it. Kris tried to worm his way out of wearing it but he figured that he had seen the way Luhan kick a soccer ball and it looked like it hurt. So when Luhan raised his foot to deliver the same blow towards the back of Kris’ thighs, he had no choice but to relent.

Kris walked into his small but cozy dorm room and he looked around, admiring everything in sight. Thinking that he needed a bit of sunlight, he opened his window and was promptly met with the sight of his neighbor's dorm room about 2 meters away.

Kris was about to lament about the fact that he’s not going to be getting any sunlight for the next two years in this campus when he was met with the glimpse of the said neighbor who looked like he had been pacing back and forth in his dorm room.

Huge, warm brown eyes.

Dark hair.

A cute smile on heart shaped lips.

Yifan felt like he forgot to breathe.

They stared at each other for a very long time, frozen in their spots before his neighbor started moving towards his desk that was facing towards his window - and ultimately - towards Kris.

Kris watched with curiosity as he saw his neighbor grab a marker and a sketchbook pad. He started writing something quickly and tore the sheet and held it up for Kris to see.

“Hi, Nerdfan. I’m Dyodoro. I hope we can be friends too.”

Kris swore he’d fallen in love.

*~*~*~*~*~*~

Kris found out the day after that he’s way in over his head. It just so happened that his new neighbor (and crush...maybe husband one day if he’s lucky) was actually Do Kyungsoo - one of the most popular people on campus who was famous for making song covers on the internet. Kris felt like he had fallen even more in love as soon as he clicked on one of Kyungsoo’s covers and heard his smooth, velvety voice singing ‘The Last Time’ by Eric Benet - one of Kris’ favorite songs.

Were they meant to be or what?

Luhan and the rest of Kris’ new friends, Joohyun and Chanyeol, laughed at his expense.

Because Kris is one of the most reserved, shy person on the planet and of course he just had to have a crush on someone way out of his league.

Needless to say, it was hard for Kris to avoid Kyungsoo so they continued their friendship. They’d grab lunches together, hung out in each other’s dorms, and watched the latest movies together. And at the end of the day before they go to bed, they’d find themselves in their respective dorms, armed with a marker and a sketchbook pad, talking about anything and everything.

Days turned to weeks, weeks turned into months, and suddenly Kris found himself saying goodbye to Kyungsoo as they went their separate ways for the summer. They both promised to keep in touch with each other and Kris couldn’t help but give a loud squeal later that afternoon at the airport when he saw the “Take care hyung. I’ll miss you.” text he received from Kyungsoo.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

By the time the new school year arrived, Kris had no time to think about anything but school work. Having divorced parents meant that he was shipped from one country to another and that was exactly what happened when he found himself flying from China to Canada nonstop during the break. As a result, he did not get any summer homework done at all.

So he decided to go back to school a week early.

Kris sat on his desk that is placed against the window (directly across from Kyungsoo’s) and got to work. Majoring in linguistics meant that a lot of his school work was based on reading and writing in multiple different languages.

He was typing away when he heard the door in the room across from his open. A smile tugged on his lips, the marker and the sketchbook pad already waiting on the far corner of his desk.

“But like, his room is on the other side of campus. I can’t live like this. Can’t you just transfer me to this dorm building? I don’t CARE how you do it. Just get it done!” Kris heard a loud female voice yelling. His eyebrows furrow into confusion. He had been talking to Kyungsoo on and off for the past 2 months (granted they haven’t been in touch with each other for about a week due to a delay in Yifan’s travel and Kyungsoo’s busy schedule) but he felt like if Kyungsoo had moved to a different room, he would have at least mentioned that to Kris. Had their friendship meant nothing?

A pang of hurt runs through  Kris but before he can say anything a young woman emerged from behind the door. She gave a vicious glare at her phone and shook her head before making eye contact with Yifan. Her eyebrows furrow in disdain. “Who the hell are you?”

Kris, despite being fluent in 4 different languages and studying the ART of language, was tongue tied.

The woman was beautiful. She had long blonde hair, perfectly maintained skin, body, and clothes. Kris could tell she was very rich.

“What the hell are you looking at?” she snapped at him.

“I’m so--”

“Ugh the last thing I need aside from this dinky dorm room is a peeping tom next door,” she practically screamed.

“Sunyoung? Are you here already?” a familiar voice cut through her rant and Kris had never seen anyone’s attitude change so quickly. From fire breathing dragon to innocent puppy in a matter of 3 seconds.

Kris almost breathed a sigh of relief when he saw his neighbor (and love of his life) enter the dorm room. As soon as he got a clear view of Kyungsoo, Kris blanched.

He was expecting to see cute, tiny Kyungsoo.

He wasn’t expecting to see a tan Kyungsoo with the arms of a Greek god.

He looked good. He looked REALLY good. Kris wanted to jump off the building and roll like a buffalo back to China because he can’t handle y Kyungsoo at all.

Kris felt his pulse quicken and his face getting redder every second.

“Kyungsoo oppa I can’t believe you’ve decided to stay in this dorm,” Sunyoung said worriedly. “Plus you’re so close to your neighbor. That’s a little weird, isn’t it?”

At the mention of his neighbor, Kyungsoo looked directly towards the window and made eye contact with Kris and his face lit up right away. “Hyung! I’ve missed you. How are you?”

Yifan waved back pathetically.

“Sunyoung, I need to introduce you to each other,” Kyungsoo started, motioning for Sunyoung to come closer to the window which she did reluctantly. “Sunyoung this is my neighbor and best friend, Yifan. We call him Kris for short. Yifan, this is Sunyoung. She’s my--”

Before Kyungsoo can finish, his phone blared loudly, not giving him a chance to introduce Sunyoung properly.

However, it was pretty clear with the way that Sunyoung had her arm around Kyungsoo as he spoke on the phone and him letting her do that that Sunyoung was definitely Kyungsoo’s girlfriend.

Heartbreak never felt so painful.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

After the revelation that Kyungsoo had a girlfriend, Kris excused himself from the lovebirds so that he could mope discreetly in Chanyeol’s dorm.

Chanyeol, upon seeing his friend’s distraught appearance, ushered him in with no questions.

“Dude, be glad I decided to come in early this year,” Chanyeol said, shaking his head as he walked towards his study chair and motioned for Kris to lie down. Kris relented, grabbing Chanyeol’s Rilakkuma plushie before plopping down on the bed unceremoniously.

“Why are you here so early anyway?” Kris wondered.

Chanyeol grinned. “Because my boyfriend finally got admitted to this school so I’m here to spend some quality time with him since he had to come in early for orientation.

Kris groaned. “You’re in a relationship too? I’m officially surrounded by taken people.”

Chanyeol frowned. “Yah. What do you mean by that? Why do you sound so surprised.”

“I mean, I’m just saying. You’re clumsy, have a bird’s nest looking hair, you have yoda ears and a creepy smile...and you’re somewhat taken.”

Chanyeol kicked Kris who almost fell off his bed. “WHAT WAS THAT FOR?”

“For your information, Baekhyun loves my hair, my ears, and my smile, okay? He thinks it’s adorable.”

“Is Bacon blind?” Kris asked.

“It’s BAEK-HYUN. Not Bacon,” Chanyeol said, shaking his head. “So we have Joohyun who’s with her boyfriend Yonghwa, Luhan and Minseok;...who else?”

“Kyungsoo. My future husband and lover.”

Chanyeol gasped. “KYUNGSOO IS TAKEN AND IT’S NOT BY YOU?”

Kris dropped the Rilakkuma he was holding in fear that he might break the plushie in two with how angry and sad he was about Kyungsoo. “I saw them together. She seems awful.”

“Who is he dating?” Chanyeol asked. “I’ve been checking his new uploads and I haven’t seen anything. Except for his duets with that hot singer, Sunyoung.”

At the sound of the name, Kris exhaled.

“Sunyoung?” Chanyeol asked, laughing. “Dude. They’re not dating. Just singing partners. At least according to Kyungsoo. Here, why don’t you check out their vide--YAH!” Chanyeol yelped as Kris pushed him aside.

“MOVE OVER, YODA. LET ME GO THROUGH HIS VIDS.”

Chanyeol kicked Kris who fell off the chair. “Contain yourself, peasant. You know, for someone who claims they’re in love with Kyungsoo, I can’t believe you haven’t seen his latest videos. I’m disappointed in you, Kris Wu.”

Kris spent the rest of the afternoon holed up in Chanyeol’s bedroom, getting himself updated with Kyungsoo’s videos

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~~*~

A few nights later, Kris was in the middle of doing his homework when he heard the abrupt opening of Kyungsoo’s door.

“No it just doesn’t work like that,” Kris could practically hear the frustration in Kyungsoo’s voice. “If we make the sound more pop and not acoustic, then we lose the essence of the song.”

Kris watched Kyungsoo pace around his room.

He looked adorable even when he was angry, Kris thought to himself.

Wow, he really WAS a goner.

“You know what? Why don’t we sleep on it and reconvene in the morning. How does that sound?” Kyungsoo asked whoever was on the phone, wearily. He hummed in agreement a few times before finally saying goodbye and hanging up.

Kyungsoo closed his eyes and rubbed his fingers against his eyelids in frustration.

Kris grabbed his notepad and wrote down, “Everything okay?”

He waited for a few seconds before he saw Kyungsoo finally look up towards at him. Kyungsoo reads his message and gives a weary smile. He sits down on his study table across from Kris and writes down, “Just stressed because of the recital.”

Kris, totally forgetting about his homework, jots down a quick, “I’m sorry to hear that.”

“It’s okay, Kris hyung. It’s not your fault.”

“Is there anything I can do to make you feel better? You look miserable.”

Kris tries not to punch himself for that last part of his own comment. Kyungsoo ALWAYS looked perfect. Even when distraught.

“You’re coming to my singing recital, right? You have to come, Kris hyung.”

“I wouldn’t miss it for the world. But I don’t know why you want me to come. I mean, you have so much fans, Soo. You don’t need me.”

Kyungsoo pouted and Kris wanted to crawl into a hole and die as he watched Kyungsoo his heart shaped lips. “You’re not just a fan, Kris hyung. You know that. Anyway, I have to get to bed. Goodnight, hyung. Sweet dreams.”

“You too, Soo. You too.”

Kyungsoo waves to Kris before closing the blinds and walking away.

“He said I’m more than a fan,” Kris said, giggling to himself. “It’s time to celebrate.”

So despite the fact that it was 1am and the neighbors were complaining, Kris spent the rest of his night dancing (quite terribly) to Big Bang’s Bang Bang Bang.

Unbeknownst to him, Kyungsoo had been watching him from the dorm room across, laughing at Kris’ attempt at copying GD.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Just when Kris thought that things were getting better, things actually became worse.

A few days after Kris and Kyungsoo had their heartfelt conversation, Kris came home to find the usually open window across from his completely shut with the blinds down.

His heart sank, opting to text Kyungsoo. “Hey Soo. Saw your window was down. Is everything alright?”

No response.

“Well, I hope everything's going okay. I don’t want to bother you because I know you’re working on the recital but if you need anything, I’m here. If you’re free tonight, come over and we’ll watch a movie together. Around 7? I’ll order our usual jajangmyeon and I’ll make you some ginger tea since I hear it’s good for singers.”

Kris hovered over the send button and before he could chicken out, he pressed send and threw his phone on his desk before ducking under the covers of his bed.

He fell asleep with a broken heart, trying to ignore the fact that he did not get a response back.

At around 7 in the evening, Kris called the local jajangmyeon place and placed his order for two bowls. He had the ginger tea ready and he sat on his bed, playing with phone.

Despite not getting a response from Kyungsoo, Kris wanted to prepare anyway.

7pm turned to 8pm...8pm turned to 9pm...and it was midnight before Kris knew it. He found himself staring at the wall clock in vain. Kyungsoo wasn’t coming. Judging from the still closed window across, Kris could tell that Kyungsoo hadn’t been home at all.

Kris sighed, getting up from his bed. He was about to throw the cold jajangmyeon away when a soft knock broke his reverie.

Without bothering to look at who was knocking, Kris opened the door and got himself an armful of Kyungsoo who was hugging his waist tightly, like Kris was his only lifeline.

“Don’t say anything. Don’t. Just let me have this,” Kyungsoo murmured.

Kris nodded, despite his shock, and maneuvered himself so that he was able to bring Kyungsoo in his dorm without breaking their hug and shut the door behind them quietly.

As soon as they were both in, Kyungsoo finally let go and Kris finally got to see Kyungsoo’s face for the first time in days.

Kyungsoo squirmed under Kris’ gaze uncomfortably. “I know...I look like I’ve been through hell. I’m sorry I haven’t responded to your messages. I have been stressed out over the performance for this year. I haven’t even been inside my dorm in days. I’ve been sleeping over Jongdae’s room. Sunyoung’s been over to get me clothes and that’s it.”

Kyungsoo looked worn out. His eyebags were prominent, his hair was a mess, and his eyes were red like he hadn’t slept in days.

And yet Kris couldn’t help but find him handsome as hell.

“Don’t worry about it, Soo. You still look handsome as always,,” Kris said, shaking his head. Kyungsoo shot him a shaky smile. “I still have some jajangmyeon and ginger tea. Would you like some?”

Kyungsoo nodded his head as Kris reheated the food and drinks. He made himself comfortable on Kris’ bed as he usually did, taking off his shoes to lie down.

After heating the food and the drink, Kris sat beside Kyungsoo. “So what movie are we watching?” Kyungsoo asked.

“Inside Out,” Kris said.

Kyungsoo nodded, smiling brightly. “Let’s go for it.”

They spent the rest of the night in their own little world. Kyungsoo, for the first time in weeks, felt like he could breathe again.

*~*~*~*~*~

On days when he didn’t really have a lot of homework, Kris would find himself inside the campus cafe with his friends to catch up.

“Seriously, you guys? We’re going to get kicked out,” Kris all but whined as he watched Luhan and Chanyeol throw around the sweet custard buns across the table. The servers were already glaring at their table, unamused. “Joohyun, do something!”

Joohyun looked up from the book that she was reading. “I’m sorry - what?” She stared pointedly at Kris before returning back to her book.

His friends were hopeless.

Before they could even create a bigger mess, Kris felt a tap on his shoulder. He turned out and froze as he looked at the easily recognizable woman in front of him.

“S-s-sunyoung?” he stuttered.

“Yeah, I need to talk to you for a second,” she said rudely. “So can you get moving as soon as possible or should I just talk to you in front of these...people?” She gestured to Luhan and Chanyeol.

“Excuse me?” Luhan asked, flabbergasted.

Sunyoung rolled her eyes. “Whatever. I don’t have the time or the energy for this. Yifan...Kris..whatever your name is...I need you to stay away from Kyungsoo.”

Kris remained frozen in his spot. “I..uhm…”

“Yah!” Chanyeol cut in. “Who the hell do you think you are to make that kind of request?”

“Kyungsoo is going to be a huge star one day. But he can’t even get through this stupid recital because he’s so distracted….and you’re one of the reasons why. Don’t you get it, Kris? You’re holding him back. Plus it’s almost painful to watch Kyungsoo hang out with someone like you. You’re spoiling his image--”

The sound of a thick book hitting the surface of the table cut Sunyoung’s tirade off.

Sunyoung looked at the owner of the book, irritated, until she recognized who it was. “S-S-Seo Joohyun sunbae?”

“Park Sunyoung what do you think you’re doing?” Joohyun asked, voice dripping with malice.

“Sunbae…,” Sunyoung laughed nervously.

Luhan scoffed. “Joohyun, you know this ?”

“Of course I do. The diva wannabe of the music department. She dropped out of college a year ago to pursue a career under SM Entertainment but they dropped her from the label not too long after.”

Luhan scoffed. “An SM Entertainment reject is here insulting us? How shameless.”

“Yah!” Sunyoung yelled.

“Sunyoung,” Joohyun began, “I suggest you leave my friends alone - especially Kris. He had done nothing wrong. Had you taken the time to get to know him you’d realize how much of an amazing person he is. Let it go and go back to your practice. We all know you need it. Just letting you know that I will report this incident to your counselor. Kyungsoo will also hear about this.”

Sunyoung stood there, in shock. Joohyun, who was about to debut in the same company she got kicked out of, was not someone to be trifled with.

“Now please apologize to Kr--” Joohyun paused, shocked to see that Kris’s seat empty.

It seemed that Kris had walked away without anyone knowing.

“Good job, ,” Chanyeol said, bumping Sunyoung on the shoulder roughly before running out the door to find Kris.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Kris sighed, lying down on his bed. He had been lying down there for hours, ever since he was sought after by Sunyoung. He’d gotten quite a bit of messages from Luhan, Joohyun, and Chanyeol, even Kyungsoo, but he chose to ignore it.

He’d always wanted the best for Kyungsoo so had Kris really been such a distraction to him?

He tossed and turn on his bed, not bothering to open the lights even though it was already night out. He wanted to wallow in his sadness.

Kris was too busy being depressed that he did not hear the window opening across from him until he heard a sweet, familiar voice.

‘If I told you I was perfect, I’d be lying...if there’s something I’m not doing, boy I’m trying. I know I’m no angel..but I’m not so bad….”

Kris wanted to squeal because he loved Nothin’ On You and Kyungsoo was singing it and his voice sounded so heavenly.

But no. Kris was wallowing tonight. He refused to let that smile threatening to spill from his face get through and he refused to look at Kyungsoo.

“You should know that beautiful girls...all over the world. I could be chasing but my time would be wasted they got nothing on you, baby. Nothing on you, baby…”

Kris covered his face with a pillow to prevent himself from fanboying. Why was Do Kyungsoo like this?

“They might say hi and I might say hey. But you shouldn’t worry about what they say ‘cos they got nothing on you, baby. Nothing on you, baby….hey yeah,” Kyungsoo finished the song.

Kris’ heart was about to burst out of his chest but he tried his best to keep still.

After Kyungsoo finished the song, Kris thought that he’d had walked away so he peeked behind his pillow, his eyes meeting Kyungsoo’s. He gave a squeak before covering his eyes with the pillow.

“Kris hyung, I know you’re still awake,” Kyungsoo said. Kris could hear the playful tone in his voice. “One because you’re still wearing the pink Piglet socks that you stole from Jongdae and stretched out so he couldn’t wear anymore. You hate wearing socks while sleeping….and number two because you just made eye contact with me three seconds ago.”

Kris sighed, knowing that he was caught. He sat up from his bed, his lalp and looked at Kyungsoo who was smiling at him. “Can I come over, Kris hyung?”

Because he was a pushover when it came to Kyungsoo, Kris found himself nodding. As soon as Kyungsoo ran out the door, Kris found himself trying to frantically clean his room, which wasn’t at all that messy in the first place, but still.

It took less than 5 minutes for Kris to hear that familiar knock on the door. He opened the door and Kyungsoo came barrelling in with pizza, which he placed unceremoniously on Kris’ desk.

“Where did you get the pizza, Soo?” Kris asked.

“I sang a song for you and everything and all you could think about is the pizza?” Kyungsoo asked playfully.

Kris sputtered. “That..that song was for me?”

Kyungsoo nodded. “Kris hyung…” he then paused and shook his head. “Wu Yifan..,” he began again. Kris blushed, hearing his full name come out of Kyungsoo’s lips. “I heard about what happened with Sunyoung.”

Kris was about to protest but Kyungsoo shook his head no.

“Let me continue, Yifan,” Kyungsoo interrupted. “I apologize that she had said all those things to you. Not only was it uncalled for, it was completely untrue.”

Kris stood there in silence, unable to speak as he watched Kyungsoo’s eyes fill with tears.

“I’ve been so stressed out over this recital because music companies would be there to see if I’d be worth signing and it’s scary, Yifan. It’s scary to know that I’m so close to my dreams and I want to run away. But then I think of my family. I think of my friends, and I think of you...and suddenly I’m not so afraid. You give me the strength. You’ve always been so supportive of me. The movie nights when I can’t fall asleep, the cups of tea when my voice is hoarse from the singing, the midnight dance parties when I’m on the brink of a breakdown...how can I not try my best? How can I NOT fall in love with you, Yifan?”

Kris stared at Kyungsoo, frozen. At this point, Kyungsoo was shaking, tears streaming down his face. Kyungsoo then reached for his back pocket, showing Kris a folded up sketchbook paper. Kyungsoo slowly unfolded it and showed the words to Kris.

“Dyodoro loves Nerdfan” it read.

Kris sighed, like a huge weight was lifted off his shoulders. He then wordlessly went to his study table and picked up the piece of sketchbook paper that he had tucked away carefully.

He then walked up to Kyungsoo and said, “I’ve had this saved since my first week on campus,” he said. He then unfolded the paper to reveal the words, “Nerdfan loves Dyodoro.”

Kyungsoo dropped the paper in his hand as he jumped in Kris’ arms, connecting his lips to Kris’.

They both landed on Kris’ bed ungracefully. Kyungsoo disconnected his lips from Kris’ to take off his shirt, giving time for Kris to sit up on his bed. Kyungsoo then sat on Kris’ lap, half with a teasing smile on his face.

Kris wasted no time grabbing Kyungsoo gently by the neck and connecting their lips once again in a frantic kiss.

*~*~*~*~**~

“Okay, seriously, this a RECITAL not an EXO concert,” Luhan groaned, trying to hide his face.

“Just let them be, honey, I think it’s cute,” Minseok commented.

The two of them looked at Kris who was carrying a huge LED sign with Kyungsoo’s name plastered on it in bright pink. Then they looked at Chanyeol who was carrying an equally huge LED sign with Baekhyun’s name in the same color.

“MY BOYFRIEND IS THE BEST,” Kris cheered.

“SHUT IT, KRIS. MY BOYFRIEND IS THE BEST,” Chanyeol argued.

After their night together, Kris had plucked up the courage to ask Kyungsoo to be his boyfriend.

Then it was a few weeks after that Kris and Chanyeol found out that their boyfriends were in the recital together.

Needless to say, it was nothing short of a fandom war between the two.

“Okay, you both need to calm down before I throw this book on your heads,” Joohyun said, causing the two to pipe down and sit on their seats quietly. Luhan shot Joohyun a grateful smile.

A few seconds later, the lights in the auditorium dimmed and both Kyungsoo and Baekhyun walked out to open the show. Kris and Chanyeol, forgetting about their fight earlier, stood up from their seats together, cheering loudly, clutching each other by the arms.

Luhan sank down further in his seat, embarrassed. He definitely needed new friends.
