Part 1

Midnight Horizon

The ocean and love are kind of similar, the more curious you are the more dangerous it can be.

The deeper you wonder in the harder it is to escape.

This love was everything. Deep as the ocean, countless as the sand, just everything

Sunset on a desolate area near shore a muffled

melody can be heard. A melody that sings with the ocean. Amid in the fragments of junk washed onto shore Jonghyun lays humming.

He struck his hands through the grainy sand that dug under his nails, not enough care to think. Jonghyun had only been sure of one thing about the state he was in, that should anyone see him they would die. He’d seen a person once and they just flat out fell dead before he could utter a sound. Several years later he'd seen another person and the same thing happened. The last person he saw had just fled but he didn't have any doubts that they weren't dead by now. The number was small, but the memories were scaring, the lifelessness shell they would become. Not sure if it had even been his fault or not. He felt his existence was dangerous. He felt guilty, but as he got used to it he spout nothing but hatred for himself. When he was spotted people usually acted in either infatuation or fear, or among the same analogy of feelings. The twinkle that his scales shined even in the lowest of lights hadn't diluted even by a drop within the countless years he had been trapped. He was stunningly beautiful. Yet the life in his eyes drained dry and cracked. He was cursed and just as full of life as the dead carcases he felt responsible for. And to his nightmare in front of him Jonghyun he saw another person who he expected was soon to be doomed to death by his fault of merely sharing a glance, or whatever it was that he was somehow involved in. He assumed somewhere along the line that that’s the reason no one comes back, why no evidence of mythological creatures ever surfaced perhaps. Little did he know the one who was doomed was himself. The figure stood there, hooded  and clenching what looked like shoes in one hand. Jonghyun was aware that he was fully visible but he just can't get away from the land even at the expense of taking life expense. It made him feel human again- his only desire. A facade that brings him life.

The days, weeks, years all blurred into this constant nightmare. But this instance couldn't live up to that because of how incredibly tense it felt he swore he could hear his ears ringing. Looking at this shadow he felt warmth from inside his chest, a warmth he seriously forgot exists. The boy in front of him is also different. His face is so sympathetic he must be an angel. He had forgotten people could look such a way, as if he could cry in pity at any moment. Their gaze held for so long it reminded Jonghyun how relevant time was. The sound of the gentle waves kissing the shore mixed into the distance and everything became mute except the sound of the man's feet against the sand approaching. Jonghyun sat on his side the best he could and observed. This was a first. His arms felt weak as the man kneeled down not but a couple inches apart.

It had been ages since he used words with another, but now in particular nothing audible could escape his mouth which was cracked open  from the confusion his mind and body aroused. He wanted to flee but his body froze. He nodded without speaking.

What is your name?

The words rang in his head in a sensation that felt like he was under attack. The boy sat himself down on his side too almost mimicking. He was dressed in a large black hood that swallowed half of his hands, hooded and half his face covered in black that was a mix of hair and shadow cast from his hood. The boy examined the his lower side. Jonghyun's scales faded in to his skin seamlessly. They were black, almost looked dark blue because of the sky. His fin draped into a very mysterious and captivating dark purple mixed with strands of black,  It reminded the boy of midnight. He tried his hand to touch them. Soft.

Jong...hyun?

He sounded unsure. He had disconnected with that name  long time ago, the name given to him as a human. To him it meant nothing more than a reminder of what he once had and will endlessly never get whereas it also felt like the only human part of him he had left and immediately restated.

Jonghyun.

He hadn't even spoken to another living thing for too long. His head was racing, you could tell even with only a glance. All these dead feelings began to stir again, leaving him confused and in the dust. Who is this boy. What is he. How is he still alive. What's happening. The boy reached for his elbow and touched gently

Jonghun... You're... A mermaid.

Suddenly he felt defensive, like he forgot or something. He didn't want to be called a mermaid, he only wanted to be human like he once was. Mermaid... What did that word mean to him. It meant to be trapped. But when he looked in the boy's eyes again he couldn't help but say,

Who... are you?

He meant a lot of things when he asked that. What are you. What is your name. What are you doing here. How are you here.

Kim Kibum.

Kibum...?

Kibum.

Jonghyun was in his own world and just stared at him. Before he knew it he felt warmness trickle down his face, cleaning a trail in the sand stuck on one of the cheeks that was planted on the ground. And then he realized he cried . All because of the fortune he has brought upon such an innocent and pure person like the one in front of him. Guilt. But it was odd. Very odd. Was it really true or was he just delusional. The boy was still breathing moving, speaking. His eyes still followed him. He even held a conversation with him. He was alive, unlike the various others who deceased before they could even approach. His curiosity awoke again. His lost hopes sparked. What's going on.

What are you.

Everything felt so real. He'd put himself to sleep as a coping mechanism. The boy gave him a puzzled look. He wiped Jonghyun's cheek with his sleeve in his fist.

I'm a human.

It was silent.

Are you... sure?

The boy’s smile shot through Jonghyun. A smile...

Yes, I'm sure.

Jonghyun moves closer to Kibum and falls in his chest and huddled into his neck. They fumbled on the sand, Jonghyun remained locked in his chest. He bawled.

...

And bawled.
