1. To stat typing, use the text tool.

Then, click on the desired area on the canvas before you start typing.

You can move the text layer around with the move tool.

2. You can change the font, font size, font colour, text alignment, indent, line height and letter spacing all from the toolbox as shown below.

Otherwise, you can also edit font, font size, font colour and text style (bold, italics, underline, strike through) from the mini toolbox on top of the text box when you are selecting the text layer.

Anything you change from the main toolbox on the left will apply to the whole text layer while anything you change from the mini toolbox at the top will only apply to the specific letter/word you highlighted before applying the change.

#note: do not scale up your text using the scale tool, change the font size directly if you need your text to be bigger scaling the text layer will lower it's quality.

I'm currently learning how the coding works here (since there are quite a lot of code pieces that don't work here.) These are pretty good guides :)

Chapter 11: You have, by far, the most helpful tutorials I've seen around! Seriously, I've been reading coding tutorials these days and I still had questions left hanging even after I read those tuts! I think it's because you're not just showing one way to do something but that you're showing what happens if you do this and not that. I'm looking forward to your scrollbar tut as I'm having problems making the scrollbar transparent on top of a background image. I know it will take a long time before we even get to that tutorial but I'm hoping it's one of things you will address! Thank you and have a good day!
