Chapter 1

Immortals

It’s true that Leo almost got himself reduced into a pile of ashes and that the situation was dire at that point of time; but B couldn’t resist herself but to check out the vampire. It was also then did B came up with a conclusion: Leo was a fine male specimen. B was introduced to N previously since he took up as the head of the household. However, she was never given the chance to get to know the other five vampires living under the same roof as N: namely Leo, Ravi, Ken, Hongbin and Hyuk. She had known the existence of the other five vampires through the profile notes and photographs that N had provided when they first moved to the city. Ever since she received Leo’s profile and photograph, B had been deeply intrigued and drawn to the vampire that she now had the honour of meeting. B knew Leo was definitely a ladies’ killer; with his sleekly muscled body that was without an ounce of fat after touching them when she was helping him earlier. Not to mention the fact that the gaze that he has never fails to make ladies’ swoon over him. Hell, he certainly wouldn’t starve, as B was positive all the ladies out there would be willing to donate their blood to Leo as long as he charm his way. And with B giving off a similar reaction, she knew it could spell trouble for her job as a vampire enforcer. A vampire enforcer's job is to ensure that vampires stay hidden in the shadows and that humans lived their peaceful lives. As long as the vampires were feed properly; which means no dead humans, the vampire enforcers generally leave the vampires that they are in charge of alone, minding their own businesses. Vampire enforcers aren’t hundred percent human too, they are more like a hybrid between the human and vampire species. Upon reaching the age of 22, under strict rules and regulations that humans are unaware about, humans who were deemed to possess the potential of being a vampire enforcer were injected with a pink serum. One becomes a full-fledged vampire enforcer if the change was successful. The rewards of being a vampire enforcer were enhancing eyesight, greater strength, faster speed and the ability to be immortal, just like the vampires. Vampire enforcers are able to walk under sunlight too. While most felt that vampire enforcers were the best of both species, it was not necessary the case as most, if not all vampire enforcers, died within the next eight years of immortality, often due to dying in the line of duty, caught between the constant power play between humans and vampires. Despite being a vampire enforcer for two years, B had still not adjusted to the life of it. After all, it’s not as though she could go running around publicizing the fact that there are vampires living amidst amongst the humans; and the fact that she had to work during ungodly hours to accommodate to vampires sleeping patterns. However, she was happy with her job, since she get to work together with two other vampire enforcers, Baro and Gongchan, who were helpful in many ways. Additionally, under the area that B was in charge of, there were only six vampires that the trio had to take care of. As B snapped back to reality, the issue that Leo almost got himself killed means that something major was going to happen to the city, which was something that B was not thrilled about. There were rarely cases where vampires attacked their own kind, but when there are; nothing good comes out of it. “Baro ah, we have a problem, a major one in fact.” B said immediately as soon as Baro picked up his cell phone. “Define major B.” He replied as B related the incident that happened moments earlier. “I don’t like the sound of this B, not one bit.” Baro answered as B sighed. They both knew very well that things would spiral out of control from here on out. One wrong move could escalate into a full blown vampire clan war. There were no way the vampire enforcers could control anything that massive without casualties; humans or vampires.  “Is Leo safe?” Baro asked. After all, Leo was their charge, thus their safety are equally important. “For now, he is. But we need to find out who wants him dead as soon as possible before things get any worse than it is. If something really happened to Leo, I doubt N would let the matter rest and if he went to complain about this to boss, we will all be damned and screwed.” B replied as she shudder involuntarily. The horror of facing their boss’s wrath was something B was determined to avoid at all costs. “Right. I will brief Gongchan on this. You should begin investigation soon.” Baro continued as B hang up the phone, climbing back into her Lamborghini and travelled to as the sun begin to rise over the horizon. B’s face broke into a frown as she stared at the spot where the ashes of the vampire she had dusted an hour ago was supposed to be there but was now clearly emptied. As she glanced around the alley, it was so undisturbed as though there were no signs of a fight that happened. Whoever cleared up during that one hour gap when she sent Leo home did a wonderful job and it proved that the task at hand was going to be more difficult. Sighing loudly, B knew it’s time to retire for the day and grabbed some sleep before continuing investigation proper later. Leo took his first breath for the night and sat up immediately, wincing from the pain that was throbbing painfully at his stomach. Taking a quick glance at it, he noticed that the wound was fully healed, leaving a long pinkish line that he was positive would be gone tomorrow. Dressing up quickly, he left the room only to find Hongbin standing outside his room pacing around, his expression full of concern as he saw Leo entered. “Hyung, are you feeling better?” Hongbin asked immediately as he inspected Leo from head to toe to see if there were any major complications. “I am alright Hongbin; the blood and a good sleep had healed me quickly. Not to worry.” Leo assured the younger one with a small smile and a pat on his shoulder. The two of them left the basement to the living room and notice the rest were already there. “Leo, are you feeling better?” N asked the moment he saw Leo, who took his usual seat beside N. “Yeah I am. If it was not for B’s timely arrival, I would be dead by now.” He asked. “Who on earth would want hyung dead though? I mean, we haven’t been mingling with other vampires and were just minding our own business.” Ken interrupted as Leo shook his head, unable to identify who would want his life either. “I think we should ask the vampire enforcers’ help on this.” N commented and it was just when the doorbell rang and the scent of a human hit them. Leo knew exactly who was standing right outside and immediately used his powers to open the door mentally, letting her in. B raised an eyebrow in amusement as the door of the vampires’ house opened dramatically, revealing the six vampires that had gathered in the living room. Taking a deep breath, she strolled into the house with her usual confident pose and despite the fact that B appeared to be relaxed, her muscles were tensed, ready for action in the event that the six vampires decided to treat her as food instead. She knew the vampires would not hurt her, but nevertheless, it was best to take some precaution. “This is a surprise B. And here I am just about to contact you.” N said kindly as B gave the vampire a smile. “Well, whatever happened earlier on was nothing that we intend to take lightly so I thought it would be best we start the investigation as soon as possible. Baro and Gongchan are making preparations as we speak.” B answered.“Please, take a seat, don’t just stand there!” N replied as he gestured the seat nearby, which B took, yet unable to relax her stance as she felt six pairs of eyes staring at her intently. Leo could feel the tension and nervousness that B is emitting, though she did not do it willingly. Leo admired her courage because most humans would have screamed and fled off once they realized they are in a room with a bunch of vampires; B was different. She remained poise and business like. Leo knew she was a little terrified as he could sense her emotions. “Leo, are you feeling better?” she asked, her eyes full of concern as he gave her a half smile. Ever since he was a vampire he had stayed far away from humans; barely in contact with them and yet, there is now one sitting nearby asking him about his well-being. It’s more than enough to throw him off. He is unsure as to what was he supposed to do in such situation. “Thanks to you, I might not have survived if not for your timely arrival and help.” Leo answered, unwillingly extending a thread of his powers to her so that she could relax herself. While she was like a prey in the predator’s den, none of the vampires had any intention of harming her. However, she frowned almost instantly, as though she knew exactly what he was doing to her and broke the eye contact immediately. Leo’s eyes narrowed in confusion. He wasn’t aware that humans can break off his powers so easily. “May I know why you were at the alley last night?” B asked with her business-like tone, not acknowledging the fact that Leo tried to charm her earlier on. “I was there to feed and was about to leave when a vampire appeared out of nowhere and attacked me with a stake. I managed to kill him before he could assault me further and tried to get away but three more vampires appeared. The rest of the story you should know because you were there as well.” Leo replied. “The human that you fed on, do you happen to recognize her?” She continued. “I guess I could if I see her face again. But I could tell she was slightly intoxicated so I am guessing she was previously at a club or pub. Is it important?” Leo answered as B shrugged her shoulders. “Too early for us to tell whether it is important. But we will figure it out sooner or later. Anyway, I should get going. I will contact you guys once I have more information.” B stated as she stood up, ready for her departure. Moments after B’s departure, N’s cell phone rang as he looked at the ID to realize it was the chief of the police department. While most humans were clueless about vampires, there were a selected few who knew about vampires, such as the chief of police department.  When the chief decided to call the local vampire, N knew there was trouble brewing. He picked up the phone. N felt his powers growing uncontrollably, drawing to him as the other vampires stirred in their seats uneasily. Amongst the six of them, N was the most powerful and clearly they knew N was pissed. Leo was the only one who had gathered his powers, ready to protect the younger ones in the event N decided to unleash his powers. N hang up moments later and stood up as silence engulfed the room; the other vampires watched N fearfully as they took in the fact that N’s eyes had turned silver. N took slow, lethal steps towards the youngest; Hyuk, who had broken out into cold sweat as N approached. “Hyuk, what the hell did you do last night?”
