Closest to heaven.
Non-FictionAnd I'd give up forever to touch you,
Cos I know that you feel me somehow
You're the closest to heaven that I'll ever be,
And I don't want to go home right now.
And all I can taste is this moment.
And all I can breathe is your life.
Cos sooner or later it's over- I just don't wanna miss you tonight.
-Goo Goo Dolls, Iris
The doctor's clinic had fewer people this time around. As he played with her fingers, while they waited for their turn, he noticed a lady sitting right across from them with twin toddlers. One of them was sleeping away in its carriage, while the other was making a fuss, pulling the lady's hair and jumping away in her lap. He smiled at the sight and turned to In Ha, who was flipping through one of the coffee table magazines that were lying in front of them.
"What if we have twins?"
In Ha looked up from the magazine, and stared at him, "Huh?"
"What if we have twins?" He repeated.
She smirked, "Do you have twins in your extended family?"
"Not that I remember. Maybe I should ask hyung..."
"There are no twins on my side. All normal kids. But I think there was an aunt though who had triplets," she said thoughtfully.
"Triplets?" He gulped. "That would be a handful!"
"And twins wouldn't?" She smirked again.
He nodded towards the twins in front of them. "They look pretty cute."
She smiled and nodded."I feel bad for the mom, though. Double the nappies and tantrums."
He laughed as they were called in, for their turn.
"Annyeonghaseyo," said the nice old doctor, as they greeted him, "How is the morning sickness?"
In Ha grimaced. "Pretty bad. The headaches and nausea haven't stopped. I wake up with a headache that only subsides after I throw up"
Dr Yoon nodded. "Could it be possible that something is triggering it? What is the first thing that you do in the morning?"
"Umm.. Freshen up. Breakfast. Coffee..."
"Ah," said the doctor, in a slightly reprimanding voice, "You aren't supposed to be drinking coffee, you know."
Dal Po's face paled. "It's the smell of the coffee? That makes her throw up every morning?"
Dr Yoon smiled. "Quiet likely. Anything else makes you queasy? Any other smells or foods?"
She shook her head. "I haven't really been having coffee. The throwing up leaves me with no appetite at all. That's a first." She paused, "Toast helps. It makes me feel less queasy."
The doctor nodded. "That's good. Try having things that make you feel better. It's always different for everyone. I'll write a prescription for something that might help keep your food down. Also, no caffeine. Even if you have teas, make sure you don't overdo it. Once or twice a day. Not more. Okay?"
She nodded.
Beside her Dal Po looked petrified.
"Ki Ha Myung-shi, don't look so tense. She's fine, aside from the morning sickness..which is something very expected at her stage."
Dal Po gulped. "I should have looked it up. I should have made sure she ate right. Instead, I made her coffee." He sounded like he wanted to crawl under a rock and die.
In Ha looked at him and seeing the guilt on his face, she understood why he was fretting away. She grabbed his hand. "It's not your fault. I insisted. And no harm done..." she said with an almost pleading look. Knowing her husband, the way she did, he would be blaming himself for this for a long long time, if she didn't stop him.
Dr Yoon smiled at the pair. Their concern for each other was so ridiculously evident, that regardless of the world around them, they seemed to have their own personal bubble. Love like that was pretty rare these days.
Dal Po looked at In Ha apologetically while she drew patterns on his hand almost reassuring him that she was fine and it was not his fault.
