Foreword
I ran faster, praying to every god out there that I wouldn’t miss the bus. I was not looking forward to getting stuck in this rain. Black London cabs sped past, splashing muddy water onto my shoes. The cabs would get good business today. If only I had money to afford one…
I was about to turn onto the next street when my gaze came to a stop on a homeless pregnant woman huddled in the corner, her frantic eyes pleading the rain to come to a stop. I stood still, unable to fathom the misery of the poor woman. Without giving it second thought, I ran over and gave her my umbrella.
“This isn’t much,” I said, “but I hope it helps.”
The woman looked at me in disbelief, and I turned and jogged away. My eyes were burning, and I don’t deal well with tears. I don’t like being emotionally overwhelmed- it takes away the control I always have on myself and my life. I was breathing hard by the time I came to a stop. But this wasn’t voluntary. I had crashed straight into a very firm chest.
Fantastic. I looked up in embarrassment and mumbled a few sorrys as I took a step back.
“It’s okay,” the person replied. He sounded so amused that I looked back at him. I wished I hadn’t. I almost fell into the water collecting next to the pavement.
“JIMIN?!” I screeched, rubbing my eyes in shock.
His eyes widened and then settled into sparkling dark pools as his lips curved into a grin.
“I didn’t expect anyone to know me here,” he murmured and rubbed the back of his neck. I was still staring like a demented goldfish.
“I didn’t expect to see you here either.” I choked on my words and that made him laugh.
“Well do you want a picture or something?” he asked warmly. “Um…sure?” I breathed. I slowly pulled out my phone, and flinched when his arm went around my shoulders.
“You okay?” Jimin chuckled as I fumbled with my phone. He slowly pulled it out of my hand and expertly took a selfie. I was so surprised that my mouth was a gaping hole in the photo.
“Let’s do this again, please…” I said, and Jimin smiled and nodded. He is so damn cute!!! The little voice in the back of my head was losing it. Swallowing nervously I turned around and faced the camera. Jimin leaned forward and I felt his cheek brush my ear. I was beginning to question if this was a dream, or maybe I was hallucinating because I slipped in the rain and hit my head on the pavement somewhere.
“Smile!” Jimin exclaimed and a second later, the best selfie I had ever been in appeared on my phone screen. Without thinking, I blurted out, “Oh gosh, you make me look good. It could be a sunny day for all I know!” Jimin’s laugh made me realize my ridiculousness and I blushed furiously.
“You’re cute,” Jimin said, smiling brightly at me.
“Thank you?” I replied, my mind blank.
“You don’t believe me…” he said, his eyes glittering with mischief.
“I’d like to,” I responded, very, very surprised that I was able to talk at all.
Jimin laughed loudly and his voice rang in the rain filled, abandoned streets. “You should,” he said softly, and then with a friendly wave he walked away.
