Foreword

Half-asleep, half-awake, Jongin makes the effort to step on the pedals of his bicycle. He has overslept again after last night's reading of his recently bought novel. He agrees that he should tone down his bibliophile tendencies when it's the start of classes, but to his lack of luck, he can't escape his addiction.

Every morning, Jongin goes for a 30-minute bicycle ride from his home to his school. Tiring, yes. But he prefers to save some cash instead of riding a bus. You know, for his leisure reading purposes.

Jongin is a high school student now, 11th grader to be precise. Two more years and he is off to college. To be honest, he hasn't been interested in any major yet. All he knows is that he loves reading and dancing. Maybe he'll focus on those.

Jongin is halfway through the road when he sees a girl whose bicycle has broken-down. She is wearing the same uniform as his, probably a 10th grader, basing from her physique. Jongin decides to approach her.

"Looks like the chains got jammed." Jongin gets off his bicycle and bends down to the level of the other's bicycle's rear wheel. He looks up at the girl only to be met by a face holding back tears. She has been biting her bottom lip for a long time, Jongin decides, for it is white from the force.

"Um, uh, don't worry. I think I can fix it," is the only consolation Jongin can think of at the moment.

Jongin rummages his backpack for a spanner. He is prepared for the worst scenario after all. That is why he always brings his trusty tool. And well, you may never know when to use it next—maybe for smashing down thieves.

Jongin loosens the nuts of the rear wheel, and puts back the chain into place. He secures it again by tightening the nuts. He also tightens the cable in case the chains come off the cog after some time.

"There. Piece of cake." Jongin smiles at the girl to lift her spirit. But she still has the same expression as before. Jongin starts to panic. "Is—Is there anything else I can help you with?" She shakes her head from side to side. "Do you, perhaps, want me to leave?"

There is odd silence between them. Not a single movement is exchanged. Finally, she shakes her head in approval.

"Okay then. Be careful out here," Jongin says before leaving her behind.

There is a strange feeling Jongin has been having since the moment he left the girl in the middle of the road—guilt, perhaps. Maybe he should have stayed a little while. Maybe he should have probed into her problem a little more. Maybe he should have offered her to join him to go to school. But those are "should have"s now.
