Can someone please explain me why so many fanfics are now Subscribers only?

I wanna see if the fanfic is good (foreword and synopses can lie) then I go to the first chapter and BAM since it's subscribes only the only taste of the fanfiction I can have are just two lines and that's it…

Seriously, why?
