CBH Extra #3: Ryu's Character in Come Back Home

Same question but for Ryu.

Ryu is ed up.

He has no tragic back story nor does he have something happen to him that messed him up to make him the way he is. He was always this messed up. He was the kid whose parents feared him because he killed the neighbour's dog.

And it didn't change when he got older and, most likely, killed his parents.

He's a man that takes the gang boss titled to another level and views himself as a soldier at war with the world. He wants power and he is willing to take out as many people as he could. He wants the most territory and essentially wants to rule the underground world.

Money is his commodity, and the one thing that he wants more in the world other than Eun AH's mom.

There was never love between the two of them. There was never some far past where Ryu was normal and just wanted love, he always wanted to own people like objects and Eun Young was one of those things.

He brought her over to his clan because he wanted her but when she fought back, not wanting to be with him, he realized that she isn't as easily controlled as he first assumed, but that didn't change the fact that he never took no for an answer. The only way to get her would be to threaten to destroy everything in her life, ever friend she made, every acquaintance she had and anyone who as much as knew her name.

She was the leader's fiancée, but she was as good as his dog.

He snapped to the point of no return when Ah Min betrayed him and stole his fiancée. Not because he broke his trust, but because there was someone who tricked him, who outsmarted him and made him look like the fool.

He felt stupid for trusting someone and bringing them into his gang and then having them turn on him and steal his 'girl'. It's embarrassing because it makes him look like he can't handle his own gang and has no control over his people.

That's why he had a vendetta on Eun Ah (since he never knew that they had Himchan). He wanted to destroy the thing most important to them but when they chose to protect her with their lives, he had to get rid of them for good, even Eun Young.

Ryu fell off the deep end with his fascination with her because even years after their death, he is still after Eun Ah even though her death wouldn't really effect her parents, but what a lovely surprise it was, when he found out his greatest rival was married to her. All the more reason to put in the effort to go after her.

He was obsessed the same way he was about her mother. He'd give his life just to make sure that she was dead.

He's a psychopath, a sociopath and probably someone with deep seeded psychological issues. I don't want to foreshadow too much into it, but Ryu is on the brink of a mental breakdown and the longer things turn out differently than he wants, the closer to the edge he becomes pushed.

He's walking on a thin line and as it shows with his easy disposal of his blood brother, Ryu doesn't really care for others, even the people who support him because at the end of the day, as long as he moves forward in life, he'll be okay, which is also why B.A.P and EXO's tight knit group confuses him. Why would they allow themselves to be weighed down by each other when they can just go off on their own and be as crazed as he is? He is the definition of every man for himself. He takes it very literally. No doubt.

There is only one reason why Ryu never got along with Kris or Yongguk: they weren't like him.

He didn't understand how someone who was as powerful as Yongguk or had as much potential as Kris would chose to give in a gang but not exploit their power. In his eyes, people with the power and the means, should use them to get more powerful, but Yongguk uses it to get rid of people that Woon wants but doesn't have the ability, as a cop, to go after.

So they become Ryu's natural enemy because what they are doing is basically unravelling his life's work instead of joining forces with him. He believed that him and Yongguk could've done great things and gone places if they teamed up and he's almost butthurt over it.

And that sort of fuels his enchantment with Yongguk. He's almost impressed by him and his intelligence. It's a battle of great minds and greater endurance. Yongguk is this young guy that doesn't seem to cower against him and every challenge he instigates, Yongguk meets it head on, without fear and without being emotionally rash. Sure, Ryu hates him, but competing with someone who he seems to admire (albeit slightly) is amusing to him and he finds it almost like playing chess with a master when he thinks of himself as the best.

That's also why he antagonizes Kris. First of all, it seems like Ryu knows a bit about Kris's past and his hatred of being called Yifan (go back to their phone call) and it's because Ryu doesn't take him seriously. Like how adults don't take their children seriously. He thinks that Kris is all talk and doesn't have the wit nor the strength to move mountains like Yongguk did. He's too weak minded and gets riled up easily. Hell, Yongguk gets riled up too, (when Eun Ah got kidnapped) but look how he handled that situation. He spread s out and searched everywhere for her. He still acted rationally and Ryu respected that to a certain level, but that didn't mean that he liked Yongguk or feared him.

Ryu doesn't fear anything.

Not even death.

Not unless someone returns from the ashes.

Ah~ Ryu. I simply hate him! XD He's creepy and psychotic and posessive and bloodthirsty and the scary thing is... he's not crazy, just power-hungry. He plans well and thinks things through. He's level-headed enough to cut his losses (including his brother) and figure out the best wat to get what he wants by doing what he thinks is necessary. Obviously his morals are FAR from a regular person's but that's because he doesn't seem to have an conscience. The love of power is a scary thing and the scarier thing is that it's so common it happens in regular life. Ryu just takes it to the extremes. I can't wait to see him face his only fear!!!
Thank you for posting these character blogs! 8D *It's great to compare my interpretations to the canonical character descriptions!*

Scary psychopath... Indeed he's the Devil in disguise... Yongguk is a true leader... Luhan is like a twin version of him but, he's too lazy or maybe disinterest with the leader title... That is indeed a very worse decision... Kris as the author have described, is a sheep hiding in wolf outfits, while Luhan is a wolf hiding in sheep outfits... I still rooted for EunHan or EunGuk... EunFan or EunKris is a NO NO... xoxoxo

"Ryu doesn't fear anything; Not even death; Not unless someone returns from the ashes."

Well said.
I wonder.. Just how empty his heart is when he left his dying blood brother without hesitation during one of those scenes. He isn't called the Devlin Ryu for nothin'.

This! Yes! I mean... he's not a nice person to meet or know, but that's what makes him a great character to have in this story! *more commenting to come* ^^
