NELL - THE DAY BEFORE MV INTERPRETATION (I CRIED LIKE A HELPLESS BABY)

I stumbled upon Nell by the vocalist featuring on Epik High's new song AMOR FATI. I loved the vocalist's voice and searched for their song and BOOM. The Day Before MV that made me bawl like a baby.

For this interpretation, I based on other people's interpretations as well.

Basically, the mv is about a friend (or sibling, lover, whatever, important person) watching the last video of his important loved one before he died by suicide, and reliving it as if he was in the same time as him, until he finally comes to terms with his death, understand, and goes on the path to closure, forgiveness, acceptance.

The MV starts with Korean actor Lee Minki, writing a note on a book, stopping at times to probably think of what to write, and continuing. The way he looks far away and his body language tells he's thinking deep, and is not in the best of moods, maybe frustrated that he cannot just put to writing what he wants to express (thus the making of the suicide video). These scenes also appear to me like he's waiting for something--rather, someONE.

Between these clips, Korean actor Song Jaerim was also seen, setting up a camera and after the clip of the piano (signifying the start), he was shown closing the camera case, going somewhere--to the place where the video was taken. The scene closes up on his face and he looks nervous. He stops, encouraging himself, "come on, it's meeting an old friend." and embarks on his journey. The song is titled, The Day Before, so I presume, this happened a day after Lee Minki's death in the mv and probably, the video Lee Minki left him was meant to make Jaerim understand why he killed himself.

Then we see Minki writing the rest of his message on the book. I find it interesting that he puts a period at the end of his message and flips at a blank next page. Like he was a story finished too soon. Like he never got the chance to write the next page because he put a period (an end) on the previous. He ended his life.

Then a shot of a tea cup. It is noticeably used, and just filled up again, so it symbolized to me a re-living of a moment, a re-telling of Minki's final moment. It was a big hint telling the scene already happened, and Jaerim was just going to re-capture the moment and re-create it, know Minki's last words and feel him like he was talking and sitting right in front of him.

Jaerim sets up the camera as Minki reads through his book. It was John Berger’s ‘And Our Faces, My Heart, Brief as Photos’. According to a research of another person's interpretation of the song, John Berger writes about the images of the dead living on into present thought. Jaerim smiles noticeably not looking into the camera, but that's because he was already starting to picture Minki right on his seat, reading. So it was also a big clue that what transpired is nothing but Jaerim's imagination. He was a day (or days, if not taken too literally) late.

He plays the video and sits down, nervous. But here it goes.

Jaerim speaks seriously (or awkwardly), as seen on his face, but Minki replies something lighter as told by the smile he gave. Maybe the video started on a lighter tone, like it was a normal conversational video instead of a suicide video. It cheered up Jaerim, he smiles and taps his feet, as he continues to imagine a light-hearted talk between him and Minki, except that Minki wouldn't get to hear Jaerim's replies. Note that their feet were placed forward to each other, like they were reaching to each other but not quite close enough to touch.

But then Jaerim flicks an object on the table towards Minki's direction, either he was starting to get fidgety for the inevitable, or was trying to distract from what will soon happen. And then Minki finally stopped reading the book and placed it down, signifying as according to another interpretation, "Min Ki is delivering to Jae Rim words that get heavier." This was finally the serious turn of events.

He pours a clear liquid onto his tea (It was funny how the poison was depicted as a clear substance, like it was what he decided, the SOLUTION to the darkness that he is)

It was interesting to note, basing on an interpretation, "Though on the table lies unfinished wine and bread, the Christian symbols for remembrance and forgiveness."

Jaerim laid out remembrance and forgiveness on the table, unfinished. He moves the wine glass with his fingers like he was turning the lens of the camera. You do that to cameras to adjust the focus, to get a clearer view. With this, I think it means he's trying to search for clarity, finding it in himself to imagine and remember him as if he was in front of him and also, readying his complete forgiveness of what he'd done to himself.

The tea cup gets emptied, like in the first scenes, and it tells us everything was coming to its inevitable end. Minki leaves his last words and Jaerim imagines every detail of his face, including his precious smile. And tears fill his eyes. It was goodbye. Jaerim smiles to him a final time, like he hopes he'd see it, despite him being just a figment of his imagination now.

His tight-lipped smile symbolizes his helplessness. Face of the struggle for acceptance. Letting him go, even though it hurts. Attempt to understanding. Minki slowly succumbs to his death, but manages a final smile of thanks to Jaerim.

Jaerim gulps and more tears fill his eyesight. But he refuses to let them out. Maybe because it will blur his vision of Minki, and he refuses to let him go just yet. He looks ike he wanted to speak, but bottles his feelings up, because even though he wanted to stop him, he knows he can't. He can't anymore. (He ing can't T__________T)  Minki struggles through his poisoned state and continues to give him his parting message, while Jaerim just listens intently, tight lipped, helpless.

Minki died by throwing his head back, not slumping onto the table. Like it meant he was happy. Like he was freed from the depressing things that weighed him down. He was finally at peace as well because he finally said all what he wanted to tell Jaerim. "This is all that I can say." It was all captured in the camera.

The little elephant (eraser?) Jaerim was toying with that he dropped on the table refers to the HEAVY burden that was continuously carried and toyed around. The burden was dropped. Jaerim had to let Minki go now. He was shaking because he wasn't ready. He didn't let go willingly, but rather, it dropped from his fingers.

The feet scene where Minki disappeared and only Jaerim's feet was shown. He was reaching out to a person he can't reach anymore.

He's still tight-lipped but slightly nodding his head. He was starting to accept, little by little. Minki was gone, he's said what he wanted to say. and he's really gone, as proved by the shot of an empty seat where Minki was.

Last scene was the suicide video's last frame. Minki was peaceful. and Jaerim closes the camera. He was finally accepting the closure. He was on the road to letting go but not quite there yet because he didn't delete the video, but was strong enough to have the courage to close the camera tight.

YEAH. So this is the first MV I cried so bad and I just wanted to wake everyone at 3 AM in the morning just to make them feel my misery.

This is my interpretation. I could go on with the lighting but I think the other interpretations explained them well, although I cannot say that I agree that the cup was filled with coffee LOL It looks like tea to me ('cause I knew a song that mentioned meeting over wine and tea so... yeah. tea and wine for their final meeting.)

Honestly, take some of your time and watch the MV. It's time well spent.

TALK TO ME AND CRY WITH ME!!!!!!!!!!!!! T____T
