What can karma points be used for?

I was just wondering. I know that it can be used to upvote, change the usernames, and I guess to donate, but why do people want it? Like, what does it do?

People who ask for karma points want to advertise their stories. Since you need a loooot of karma points to win the bid of the day you want to advertise your story, people ask for karma.
