traits —Curious, limited (due to her illness), kind, stubborn, a bit spoilt, gets disinterested easily, indecisive, bubbly

personality —

Although weakened physically by her illness, there isn’t a single force upon this Earth that could hinder Maya’s spirit and curious nature. Spending the beginning years of her life confined inside of the palace for her own protection have made her extremely sheltered and she knows little of what life is like beyond the boundaries of the Northern Water Tribe, although she has travelled all over the world in her thoughts and daydreams, and she is always extremely eager and overexcited to learn of new techniques and customs from the neighbouring countries and factions. She wishes nothing more than to be as independent as her brother is, to set foot upon foreign soils without hoards of guards at her back, and during her excursions around the land of the Northern Water Tribe it is likely that she will make the most of whatever outside time she is gifted in a variety of different ways. Many of the locals would describe Maya as a kind and spirited girl, one with vastly more bubbly and hot energy than her brother, but one locked within a weak, fragile casing that can never quite seem to keep up with her apparent high-flying energy. She’s a curious girl who likes to have fun and poke her nose into things she shouldn’t, and although she’s kind she’s extremely stubborn in her ways and will always push the boundaries of her limitations in order to get what she wants the most.

Maya has a fascination for beautiful things, and to her the most beautiful of all things is snow. Maya also feels extremely calmed when in snow and she seems to have a natural love and affinity for the weather. She adores snow so much that the waterbenders working for the palace arrange for it to be snowing a vast portion of the time mostly for her sake; this may be one of the reasons why Maya has a small but undeniable spoilt attitude, as people from the palace and her family have been doting on her (partly through concern at her ailments and also partly because of her royal status) and performing actions specifically to make her happy for the whole of her life. Maya has a low tolerance for boredom. Dynamic and exciting she's easily bored, and favors variety in all things. She probably has multiple interests, each holding her telescopic attention for short bursts. When she is asked to choose etween two things, this is where we see another of Maya's darker qualities; indecision at its best. She has a hard time making her mind.

background —

Born as the Northern Water Tribe princess, life was supposed to be smooth sailing for Maya. Though she wasn’t the next in line for the throne, with the spot being taken by her elder brother Ananada, she was still destined for greatness. She was beautiful, she was kind, and she showed signs of waterbending at an early age; she was everything her parents could have hoped for.

Except,  Maya was limited. She was born as a very sick and very frail child initially, pale as snow and lungs incapable of keeping her as fit and as healthy as she needed to be. Health checks run by the best medics in the entire Water Tribe concluded that  Maya had problems with glands that produce mucus and sweat and a lot of it was clogging up airways in her lungs, commonly making it difficult for her to breathe. She was prone to frequent lung infections and nasty coughs, as well as recurrent bouts of fatigue, and so for a lot of her childhood the little princess was kept where she was safe and doted upon in any way that would make her feel better.

On the days where she felt healthy, little  Maya would spend every waking moment playing with her big brother, Prince Ananada.  Maya adored her elder brother so, and sometimes she would ask for him to help her practice her waterbending skills when he had free time and wasn’t feeling quite so ill or so tired, but the practises and movements were often taxing on her poor body and they could never carry on for very long.Ananada was patient with her, however, and would often make it snow for her when she was especially upset or sick. Maya loved Ananada more than anything and would often strive to be as independent and as free as he was, despite the weakness of her own body. When Ananada went away to the Waterbending academy Maya was made to stay home as her parents still disliked the idea of her moving around too much, and so the princess began her training toward the art of using waterbending for healing purposes. She was only given free roam of the city when she turned fourteen, and even then she was constantly flanked by guards and specialist waterbenders of the palace who would protect or help her should she come to harm.

When Maya turned eighteen, news came to light that her brother would begin his travels around the world. When Maya first heard, she cried herself to sleep that night. The idea of her beloved brother leaving for long times on end, even so much as a few weeks, was a bad enough concept in itself, but more than anything she was jealous; she was jealous of the fact that he could leave the North Pole whenever he wanted and see the world that her eyes had so desperately been aching to see for so many years, and she was jealous of all the amazing stories he would have to tell when he got back or of the bronze glow to his skin that would always give hints to his time spent in the Fire Nation. She begged and begged her parents to let her travel like her princely brother did, but illnesses still kept her weak and bedridden at times and they were adamant about the preservation of their baby girl’s health and safety. She hopes that Ananada can change their minds, but for now she resides in the Northern Water Tribe boundaries, desperately wishing for a way to sail away from her bonds into the horizon she sees from her window every morning.

trivias —
- Maya isn’t a very strong waterbender, unlike her brother. She knows how to manipulate small bodies of water and can move or shape them to her will, but not much else in the way of it. However, as a replacement, Maya has been receiving formal training since a very young age in the art of healing using waterbending, and has become surprisingly good at the skill. She can heal all manner of extarnal problems, such as burns, lacerations and broken bones, and can also remove diseases caused by external issues such as pollution or toxins in the air.

Interactions —Love hurts. Love stinks. Love is blind. There are many degrees of one-sided love and Maya's case is the worst...at least from her point of view. She is head over heels for him who doesn't even know her name. When she befriended him and finally gathered the courage to to express her undying devotion—mere attraction—to him only to get rejected with the standard, “Oh you’re sweet…, but you’re not really my type. But she didn't just walk away in defeat and go for her next potential obsession; she swallowed in misery and refused to accept rejection. She kept trying to get close to him and make him notice her.
