    For me, it depends on the situation. For example, when it's you who had said/done something to make the atmosphere awkward, you could apologize and ask him/her if what you said/did struck a chord. If it's him/her who had done something to make the atmosphere awkward, instead of running away, you could straightforward tell him/her. Or, if that's rude, you can change the flow of the conversation(discreetly, of course.) Still, remember to confront him'her about what he/she did to make the atmosphere awkward!
