The Fanfiction Bandwagon of a K-pop Fan

Right; I'm still rather new and trying to accomodate myself to the site as well as all the bits and pieces it has to offer, so please bear with me :)

The thought that a very limited amount of people if not no one will read the post has come across my mind, but I figured typing it all out is better then keeping it to myself.

Fanfictions has become another accessory to a typical 'K-pop' fan; not everyone wears it per se, but having it as part of your description is of the norm along with things such as tumblr, kakaotalk, and forums. Becoming a fan myself was already an unimaginable feat that I'd managed to seemingly overcome (not that I regret it in the slightest) but I was never really one to fangirl, let alone follow groups and then later proceed to read/write stories about them. As you can imagine the process of becoming a fan was a rather interesting one, I was confused and surprised with myself to say the least. Once I embraced it however, it became an emotional rollar coaster ride which never seems to let you have a break.

Thinking about it now, throughout my entire time being a fan of korean music, I seem to have initially rejected alot of the things I love the most now. Even when it comes to songs, sometimes I'll have to listen to it a couple of times before truly getting into it.

Likewise the thought of reading/writing fanfictions hadn't even crossed my mind, for me it was unthinkable and for various reasons.

One of them being, when it comes to books and reading I am extremely picky; which is ironic since I enjoy a wide spectrum of genres. I think it has more to do with how the story is presented, I may be interested in the plot but not the writing style. Another reason was due to a common theme found in many fanfictions; shipping.

I ship friendships; not ual relations between members of groups :) I have read a few boyXboy fanfictions (mostly because of friends) and I will admit to enjoying some of them, but I read them as they are sent to me and not because I have looked for them. Needless to say if I was alone at a book store I wouldn't be at the boyXboy section.

Funny enough it was because a friend had specifically told me not to read fanfictions that I became curious. I decided to do a small search for myself and though I found a few to read with original characters; it was more to fill time rather then for enjoyment and so I never got into any. Truthfully the specific members I was looking for are shipped together quite a bit, trying to find something that was out of the norm in a site I wasn't accustomed to wasn't as easy as I'd hoped =.=''

It wasn't until a boring summer day which brought me back to the site, and when I came I was greeted by the featured section, which this time around caught my attention. Though at the time, I was still merely a casual fan of the group being promoted in the story, and if anything didn't know so much about the main member of the story. Looking back I'm glad I didn't as well, because I got to appreciate the character as the character of the story, rather then an idol playing the character of the story.

One of my guilty pleasures (I have many) being a well written drama romance, which the story had seemed to be about; I appreciated the authors writing style from the forward and decided to give it a go.

I'm so glad I did. so so glad. To be honest I want to run to the author and give her a big hug, but I understand thats a bit odd coming from a hidden lurker.

It was one of the first stories I'd read which led me to change my perspective of fanfictions and allowed me to spend some time to search and find those other hidden jewels. In the end it became a group of authors which had caused me to make an account (.... also because some of their stories became subscribers only lol) and even maybe start thinking to make one of my own ;)

I'd like to thank each of those authors; but I'll do so in another post. I have a tendency of writing essays T_T

What can I say; looks like I've joined the fanfiction bandwagon ;)

continued --> I totally get you about writing essays, as you can see in this second comment since I alreay hit the limit, OTL.

I think it's great you chose to write down your thoughts becaus there is always someone to read it and letting go of thoughts helps clearing one's mind.

I hope you'll have a nice journey on AFF! ^^

Although I've been barely reading fanfics lately, I am still writing, so my journey hasn't ended yet. :)

First of all, wow. I never thought there was someone with a similar journey of becoming a fangirl. I totally understand you!

Just like you, I was never the type to "fangirl", so it took me a while to get used to it and embrace it.

As for the songs, it's the same for me. I realised that many of the songs (and also other things) I really love are things that I hadn't liked all too much at first.

Honestly, I didn't even know a site like AFF existed where people wrote "fanfiction". I had barely gotten into contact with fanfiction until then, so it was very new for me, so it was just as unimaginable for me that I'd actually read fanfics, let alone write fanfics one day.

And oh my god, yes, yes, yesss!! Finally someone who gets me! This is also what first caused me to overlook fanfic that were mentioned on tumblr. I'm not into shipping romantically (let alone ually). I do ship, but more of a bromance, a strong friendship is what I enjoy and cute friendship moments, but nothing more. I did read some of them, though, but only because everyone praised their beauty. So I made an effort and overcame my actual "dislike" towards it and read a few of those. However, I have to say that I'd still rather stay from those.

That's actually what I prefer when both reading and writing stories. I try not to view the character as the idol, but more as the character the author (or I myself) created. It's more about reading stories than fanfictions for me.

That's really sweet and considerate of you, but you know, I think, especially on the Internet, it doesn't matte whether things come off as odd or not. Awkwardness is basically non-existent here, so just doing as you like is absolutely fine. I'm not just talking from my perspective, but I think many people wouldn't mind at all! ;)

It's great to hear that you've joined the bandwagon and don't make it a "maybe think about making one of your own" but a "definitely" ;)
I think, the more you try out, the more fun it'll be!
