Ships (The only kind I can be on without getting seasick)
So, let me just start by saying that I have been a hardcore shipper of many ships—my original one was the Mulder/Scully pairing of The X-Files. Which, insofar as Wikipedia can be used as a reference, is the pairing that really got shipping off the ground (I think that was a pun?).
That’s right. I been shipping since shipping was barely a thing. I’ve jumped on and off ships, been witness to many of them sinking, and even ones that just sailed off without anyone’s knowledge. What can I say? I’m a romantic at heart and I gravitate towards strong chemistry like a moth to a flame.
Thus, without further ado, my list of current Kpop ships.
Ships I’m Currently Onboard
Pinkfinite: The original 7-member line-up of A Pink with Infinite. I mean, 7 on 7, perfection much? The idea of them all pairing off appealed to me soooooo much, but now they’ve gone and edged Yookyung out, which means poor Woohyunnie would be flying solo (yes, I wanted them together).
Myungsoo/Naeun: Infinite’s visual Myungsoo (L) and A Pink’s visual Naeun. Both obsessed with the color black, both a perfect blend of both angelically innocent looks with an indefinable sensuality, both seemingly holding more beneath the surface than their carefully-crafted stage personas would suggest. I feel they would be the couple that would have their own special rituals and code words, that couple that could talk to each other with just a look. I totally wanted them to be on We Got Married, even if I feel that show makes like no sense whatsoever, but if they were able to get these two beautiful people together doing cutesy things or even just staring at each other, I would’ve been there every week. And in a totally shallow way, they would look fantastic together!
Sunggyu/Chorong: Infinite’s leader Sunggyu and A Pink’s Leader Chorong. Well, they’re both leaders of large groups, kinda heodang (you know, ditzy, but in a totally adorable way), and apparently obsessed with leopard prints. Oh, and apparently bad drivers. Another Pinkfinite match made in heaven. I feel they would be that couple that bickers outside the movie theater over which film to watch, then spend the entire running time making out. And get lost driving somewhere out in the country and refuse to ask for directions. And when they finally do, they realize they’ve literally been circling their destination for the last ten minutes. Then they’d laugh sheepishly and make out. HA.
Hoya/Eunji: Infinite’s dance machine Hoya and A Pink’s ace Eunji. I know a lot of people are shipping Sunggyu/Eunji after her Running Man revelation that Sunggyu is her ideal type and his Han Solo-level-douchey-cool remark of, “Oppa will think about it”, but my heart lies with this ship. The Reply 1997 couple. The Busan couple. The triple threat couple (between them, they got singing, dancing, and acting covered; Hoya also raps! Their kids will be super-talented). To me, this is the only Pinkfinite ship with any sort of steam. I mean, they were together for months shooting Reply 1997 and then there were other random appearances where they were all sorts of adorable together. I feel they would be that stable couple that everyone thinks of as the backbone of the group, you know, you think they’re going to be together forever because they’re friends first, a couple second?
Seungho/Seung Ah: MBLAQ’s leader Seungho and Rainbow’s vocalist Seung Ah. This one is totally without any merit. I don’t even think they’ve ever shared any screentime. Doesn’t matter to me. The Seung couple would rock it, in my opinion. They’re both amazingly mature people, both intense, but not without humor. Seungho is this powerhouse of a leader, plugging away with MBLAQ, who are criminally underrated in my opinion, and always keeping it as real as is possible in the idol world. Seung Ah stole my heart on The Romantic and the Idol where no matter how shoddily she was treated, she kept it classy. True grace, that one. I think they would be all kinds of awesome together.
Cheondoong (Thunder)/IU: MBLAQ’s visual Cheondoong and power vocalist IU. Sigh. Well, I know some people ship this, too, but again, I think it’s also without much merit. Most people know they were good friends during their trainee days (and apparently, still are), but they seem quite content to keep it that way. Which is cool, but I think they’d make a fantastic romantic pairing as well. And look fabulous as a single unit. If they went around together, they’d look like they stepped out some romance manwha, I’m sure!
Bonus: Pairings I’d Love to See in a Drama
Myungsoo/Kim Yoo Jung: Yeah, I know she’s super-young, but the main couple of Ma Boy was years apart too, and that didn’t hurt the chemistry at all. They’d be so sweet in a high school set drama. I wouldn’t care how cliché-ridden it was. They would make a fantastic chaebol/candy pair. They could throw every trope in there—birth secrets, mean hero’s mother, gambling debts—and I’d still watch it if this couple was at the center of it. Gorgeous together, aren’t they?
Hoya/Kim So Hyun: I swear I’m not trying to be gross! Yes, there’s a significant age difference, but they could play the main couple’s younger counterparts and the plot could revolve around how she was too young for him in the past but now they’re older, it’s okay to be a couple. I don’t know. The vibe of these two makes me think it could work. They both have these “touch-me-not” façades, but they can play friendly and vulnerable as well.
What are some of your favorite ships? Why did you board them?
