Into The New World

Today marks the sixth year anniversary of Girls’ Generation. They debuted in the year 2007 with Into The New World which is, for SONEs, the best debut song forever. The song was supposedly a pop-dance song but why is it when I listen to it, instead of getting myself in the mood to dance, I get so sentimental? Oh the power of nine.

I first ‘knew’ about them four years ago. I think it was the time when they were promoting Tell Me Your Wish. I was never a fan from the start. I just know about them but I disregarded their presence. Before, I was on my way of being an otaku. Just on my way, since I never dug down as much as my sister anyway. That gave way for me to be a JPOP fan then later a KPOP fan. However, I was never fond of girl groups. I only admired the boy groups and the ones that I remember that I stanned hard during that time was Super Junior. Yes. ELF was my first fandom. I was still considerably young back then, around 13 years old. Yes.  13. Maybe I was. No. I was an immature fan back then. I feel possessive over my oppas that when I heard about the rumors about them and Girls’ Generation, I automatically close door for the girls. I didn’t hate them. I just basically didn’t care about them. Funny since during that time when we celebrated United Nations week and our class represented Korea and Japan, I recommended that we dance to Girls’ Generation’s Tell Me Your Wish. Maybe it was because, like I said, I didn’t hate them.

There was a time when my sister told me about the black ocean incident. It was stated in an ELF’s point of view. Did I hate them by that? No. I just didn’t care. As years goes by, I expanded fandom as well. It didn’t take me long to explore different KPOP groups. It wasn’t that hard to be honest.  I become a great fan of B2ST and SHINee. I spend my time surfing the net every weekends, just weekends.

One of my friends is considerably ‘interested’ with Girls’ Generation. He would download their music videos and we’ll just copy mp4 files from him anyways. I have a particular liking for Time Machine even though I wasn’t a fan that time. He introduced EXO to us. Yes. We weren’t that updated before because internet in my place and it’s on ‘okay’ level. Along with it was TTS’s Twinkle MV wherein EXO-K had guest appearance. I remember my sister ignored me for a while because when she said something about Tiffany, I said, “Maybe you just envy her.” Woah. I sounded protective that time, didn’t I? And no. I don’t know who’s who in Girls’ Generation before. I think I don’t even know who Yoona was.

It was during the first days of December when I ran out of new music videos and group to check out while I was on Youtube when I saw Taeyeon’s cover of Rihanna’s Take a Bow. I decided to click it and watch it so as to ‘waste’ time. I was amazed to be honest. I remember that one of the first few comments I made on YouTube was on that video. I said something like, “I’m not a fan but I must admit she sang it well.” And then I watched Tiffany’s cover of Rolling in the Deep. After that, I bugged my sister to tell me who’s who in Girls’ Generation. Yep. My sister pretty much knows all of them. Her reason was this, “If you’re hating someone, you should know who you are hating.” Well, it doesn’t really matter anymore since my sister is not an active-anti who posts death wishes for Girls’ Generation. She just… really doesn’t care. Funny, because she actually entertained me and tells who’s who. It took me like 15 minutes to be able to identify them. I had the hardest time differentiating Tiffany from Taeyeon. Unusual? Yes. I think so. People would normally find it hard to differentiate the triplets instead.

The next days were all spent to know Girls’ Generation more. I didn’t started with their music, I started by watching their ‘funny moments’ and different fan cuts. Jessica was my first bias. (And she is still.) Was it because she’s beautiful? No. Was it because of her voice? No. It’s not like she’s not beautiful nor is her voice not that good but she became my bias after watching her cut in Strong Heart together with Sunny where she revealed her ‘erted’ side. I find it funny and amazing. I get to love them more and more each day. I experienced a different kind of happiness than from what I experience from the groups that I first stanned. I would even stay in the house until their current song’s music video ends on playing on the local television even risking the possibility that I’ll go to school late. I was never ashamed of showing my love for the girls. I’d tell my classmates about it. They’re not new about me being a KPOP fan anyway but they’re new about me stanning on a girl group. They’re the first girl idol group that I ever stan. I don’t know but I fell in love with them—fast. All of this happened within a month. Unbelievable? Yeah. For others, maybe. But if you know Girls’ Generation, you’ll probably know why.

Kim Taeyeon, Jung Sooyeon, Lee Soonkyu, Hwang Miyoung, Kim Hyoyeon, Kwon Yuri, Choi Sooyoung, Lim Yoona and Seo Joohyun, the nine girls who change the lives of many. They inspired us to be better. They showed us what family is. They helped us during the hard times. The ones who painted smiles on our lips. The ones who literally made us laugh our asses off. The ones whom we admire the most. The reason why we stay up all night. The ones who made us cry. The ones whom we dedicate our time and effort to. The ones… the ones we love. We love them ever so dearly and even we don’t know why. The bond between them is magical and so does their bond with the fans. It isn’t just a mere like anymore. It isn’t a mere fond of anymore. It is love. It is neither because of their faces nor their voices, though it does contribute, but their personality, their whole selves, everything about them, the love they have for each other, them being a family, the soshi bond that made us fall for them deeper.

Girls’ Generation, when you step on the stage in the year 2007, you step into a new world. In that world, you welcomed us and let us in. The journey wasn’t always easy but you made it through. I will always be proud of being a fan. I will always love you. You make my life complete. <3Today marks the sixth year anniversary of Girls’ Generation. They debuted in the year 2007 with Into The New World which is, for SONEs, the best debut song forever.
