Fanfiction Trends

Fanfiction is becoming an outlet for ual fantasies.

Don't you argue with me. You know it is.

I've browsed through some of the 'popular' and 'recently featured' fanfictions, and guess what trends I've found?

Poorly written paragraphs riddled with grammar mistakes and scenes aplently.

I'm not saying that my writing is loads better or anything, because I know that my writing still has many flaws and needs improvement, but it disappoints me to see such stories get such critical acclaim. Half of these writers can't even tell the difference between 'there' and 'their' and they're (pun intended) getting hundreds of reviews and subscribers?

Here's the thing: if the so-called popular fics consisted of quality writing, with little grammar errors and an innovative story line (ie. 'My Only Angel' by darkice), I have high respects for such a promotion from their readers. Because they are deserving of that much attention. But, believe it or not, your regular high school is not an underground brothel and girls do not randomly get it on with the guy sitting next to her, in front of her, AND behind her in history class all at the same time. Not every rated story has to have a rated scene every minute. Honestly now, these characters have so much I don't even know the actual plot of the story.

And to authors who are so obsessed with writing the "APPLY" & [Celebrity] fics, have some confidence in yourself, will you? Just because you're hesitant about writing and you want more readers, doesn't mean the rest of us should have to rake through the list on winglin just to find a decent fanfic with a legit pairing.

And those who are starting to write the "You (reader)" & [Celebrity] are completely misusing the idea of 2nd person fiction. I'm sorry but "you walk to the couch, 'accidentally' fall on top of Jaejoong, and you guys make out " is not how the 2nd person voice works. And I'd rather not do such a thing, thank you very much. And those fics seem a bit demanding and dictatorship-ish, dont' you think? "What can YOU do for your country?", my foot.

I remember last year or perhaps...1.5-2 years ago...winglin still had a lot of real stories with real pairings, and despite the lack of fluent English and flawless grammar, at least they had put some thought into their writing and wanted to write a story with purpose that had some meaning. Not a ual fantasy to 'feed your need' or to make up for a fangirl's lack of a life.

Yes, and that is all. Just felt the need to voice my opinions.

Response to lovelywonderful: The fact that not all "You" stories are poorly written is indeed true, but if you really want to get technical about this, your statement "Everyone loves her fanfics" should also be considered as a generalization. I'm sure that the general consensus likes her stories, but, like you said about me, has everyone read her stories? Probably not.
Perhaps what you consider ‘quality’ writing may not suit my taste, because I personally rather not read a fanfic about myself. But I respect you for expressing your opinions, so differences accepted. Plus, if you had read my paragraph on "You" fiction, I did not say that all of them aren't good-- rather, I said that they are "misusing the idea of 2nd person fiction", which, if you have studied English/literature, is the case. Stories about “you” do not fall in the literary fiction category. But then again, I do understand that this IS fanfiction.

Anyhow, I feel that I am entitled to my own opinions and through observation, I think that the trends I’ve observed in the past few months hold true in many fanfiction sites.
There are "YOU" stories that are really good. Like Dbskgirl4ever. Everyone loves her fanfics. You can't always say that "You" stories aren't that good or anything. Have you read all of them? probably not. Of course, there will be the bad ones and good ones. You just gotta look.
