Spain and stereotypes: Are they true ?

Every country in this world has its stereotypes. Some more famous than others.

Who has never heard that England is a rainy, cold mess ?

Who has never heard that french people are arrogant ?

Who has never heard that Spain is paradise of good weather during summer ?

So here I am, to explain you the stereotypes of this country and, most importantly... are they true ?

1) Spain is sunny and warm 24/7.

Conclusion: FALSE.

Explanation: Spain has a mediterranian climate in most of its territory. Mediterranian climate is dry and hot during summer. But ! I said most part of Spain, not everywhere ! Northern Spain is really cold, and during summer it rains quite a lot. The thing is, that when tourists say that 'Spain is soooo warm', it's because they probably only visited the south, where the hottest regions are. Catalonia, Valencia, Canarias and Balears islands indeed have splendurous beaches - but hey, Barcelona's beaches are nasty. Horrible -, But if they say that Spain is warm, you have to understand this: They say it because they came here for beaches. And most beaches are in the warm zone of Spain, so no doubt at all this rumour has been spreaded around so easily. I live in a valley in the Pyrennes, and during summer it can easily be around 30ºC easily. But Barcelona is so much hotter ! And what's in Barcelona ?

Beach and clubbing clubbing clubbing all the waaaay !!!

Yeah. Where most of this country's problematic teenagers live. Not difficult to understand at all.

2. Madrid has gorgeous beaches

Conclusion: FALSE

Explanation: Madrid is in the center of the Iberian Peninsula due to military strategies - because it's more difficult to reach the capital if it is in the middle of the country - eversince it was made the back then empire's capital. That means that, no, and I'm sorry.

It's just that I've seen that in so many fanfics and it disturbed my poor mind.

Just going to explain this right in few words. The nearest beach - as it is called with sand, and sea water - is about, at least, 500 km away from Madrid. 500 KM ALRIGHT. NOT 5.

See Madrid there ? IT'S IN THE FAKING MIDDLE ):DDD. If you're interested to know where I live, search in northern Catalonia (Cataluña) for 'La Seu d'Urgell'. I live near there !

Please. If you plan to do any fanfic/story/novel where the action occurs in a foreigner country:

a) Only do it if you know well the country (Lived there, been there several times, have family and close friends living there)

b) Take advantage of the great variety of ethnies in this website ! If you put, for example, Poland in the searching engine up there, I'm sure you'll find someone from Poland ! So, why not ? Why not making friends from a new country and ask that person for things about his/her country for your fanfic !

I tell you this seriously. Please, don't make things weird for us anymore.

3. It's some kind of familiar tradition to go to San Fermín

Conclusion: FALSE.

Explanation: The spanish word for bull is toro. As you know, bulls are a cultural distinctive of Spain. Like, when you think about Spain, you always think about bulls, flamenco, paella, sunny and warm weather, beaches and on these recent years clubbing has also been added to that list.

But that doesn't mean everyone is idiot enough to run in front of a bunch of bulls in narrow alleys and streets. Don't get me wrong, I respect the country a lot. But the thing is, I think these peple risk too much. What if a bull steps you or hurts you badly with its horns ? You can't imagine how many peple get hurt or just die every year.

So, is it a tradition ? Not at all. Most people only watch and would never, ever step inside the security limits in their sane minds.

4. Everyone listen to flamenco.

Conclusion: FALSE

Explanation: Most of you don't know this because you're new to my new blog posts but those who are friends of mine for some time know that my bestfriend Marina is from Andalucía, where flamenco comes from. Well, she was born from Catalonia but all her family comes from there. And by her own words, she said this to me:

"Only my grandparents and, sometimes, my mother listen to flamenco. I don't like it all, but I have a small liking towards it because it's the music from my origins."

In a general basis, only grannies and grandpas listen to flamenco. And, sometimes, my friends' parents as well. But not that much. And ah, here in Spain we call it sevillanas from Seville.  I still didn't understand where the word flamenco came from.

Most people listen to mainstream american and spanish music.

5. Spanish are olive skinned, black haired and have brown eyes

Conclusion: FALSE and TRUE.

Explanation: AYO, WE'RE SPANISH NOT MEXICAN TO BEGIN WITH ! I've seen my bunch of 'spanish people' appearing in american shows and the actors and actresses are ALL MEXICAN. There's this CSI NY episode - yeah CSI !! - where a supposed investigator from 'Mossos d'Esquadra' scientific division - a.k.a  CATALONIA's police - goes to investigate the crime scene where a spanish business man was murdered.

Here's the vid with catalan subs:

AND NOW, REASONS WHY THIS MAKES US LAUGH OUT LOUD.

a) Mossos d'Esquadra are the police from Catalonia, not only Barcelona. C-A-T-A-L-O-N-I-A you get it bro ?

b) Mossos d'Esquadra speak in catalan, not spanish.

c) Mossos d'Esquadra don't have mexican guys ahem ahem. Because I've never seen any mexican here in Spain. They're not dumb ! They go to the States, following the American Dream ! Why coming to a poor country like Spain ? Muahaha no.

THESE ARE TRUE MOSSOS D'ESQUADRA SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATORS. Judge by yourselves:

Are they olive skinned and black haired ? I don't think so.

6. The only official language is spanish

Conclusion: FALSE

Explanation: In Spain there are four official languages. 4 !!! Besides of spanish, there's euskera/basco, catalan and galician.

7. We eat tortas de maíz with food, everyone eats paella and tapas are a daily snack

Conclusion: FALSE.

Explanation: I have cousins in the US whom I speak to every week. And guess what ! They said to me that their schoolmates are fairly surprised when they say them that in Spain and Portugal we eat bread with our meals.

Wanna know why ?

Because they though we eat tortas de maíz like mexican do !!

*epic facepalm*

I'M NOT GOING TO REPEAT THIS AGAIN, PEOPLE. WE'RE NOT MEXICAN. WE DON'T EAT MEXICAN FOOD EVERYDAY. NOT EVERYONE LIKES PAELLA. IN FACT I HATE PAELLA. I ONLY ATE TAPAS ONCE IN MY LIFE, EVEN THOUGH I LIVE IN SPAIN FOR ALMOST 9 YEARS. SO, NO, NO, NO. PLEASE NO MORE 'HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER' EPISODES WITH SPANISH BARS IN BARCELONA FULL OF MEXICAN PEOPLE EATING TAPAS DURING ALL DAY. NO NO NO NO !!

Lol I totally understand, but despite everything, it's understandable that people that are not from Spain or other country make the mistake of stereotyping. They don't live there and if you sum up the fact that not all of them know someone from Spain, their knowledge is limited, but yeah at least I wouldn't put wrong information of a country in a fanfic for example, doing some research doesn't cost anything. In my case, people always confuse Uruguayans with Argentinians, must be because we're small and our cultures are similar in various aspects. But at least Spain has stereotypes, I don't really think my country has them... lol

PS: Escribi en ingles para que el resto lo pueda entender xd

O.O Interesting though I haven't heard any of these stereotypes. I'll keep this blog in mind when I take my characters to Spain. Hahaha, I wonder which fics you saw. They could have at least asked Google.
