The Last Wednesday

As some of you may know, Persian new year is actually tomorrow and really, why wouldn't I post a blog post about it? :D

So, in this blog post, I will tell you guys about something fun that we Persians do on the last Wednesday of the year! Actually, it's late Tuesday night, and because we celebrate almost till dawn, it counts as Wednesday.

This special night is called Chaharshanbe Soori. Chaharshanbe means Wednesday and Soori means Feast which is actually an old word for Sorkh, which is a word for the colour red.

And seriously, how could something be fun without a flame or two? Yes, we celebrate this night with fire-related stuff, and now you know why the word Soori goes back to the word Red.

The main thing we do on this night is that we make a fire and jump over it. Now, the size of this fire depends on the level of your craziness! Me, myself, I wait until the fire is so tiny and even then I jump from beside it (a scared little bunny, I am); but some of my cousins...they bring hell. They make huge fires and just...walk through it! That's what it seems to me, at least.

And it's not that we're so mad that we jump over fires for no apparent reason, it's actually very meaningful. First of all, the fires are lit to "keep the sun alive." till the morning when the sun comes. Furthermore, while we jump over the fire we say "zardi-ye man az to, sorkhi-ye to az man" which literally means "my sickly yellow paleness is yours, your fiery red color is mine"  This means that you want the fire to take your yellowness (your sadness, problems, sickness, etc) and in return give you its redness (warmth, energy, happiness, etc). So you'll be blessed for the new year. Isn't it just amazing?

This is an ancient Persian festival dating back to at least 1700 BCE of the early Zoroastrian era~ So old, man.

On this night, we also have fireworks, firecrackers and those kind of stuff. It makes it very fun but it also makes the parents worry a lot because the probability of something happening to someone is rather high because, well there are fires everywhere. But you should see my dad, guys... You have to be careful around him on these days, you never know when he might lit a firecracker near you and BANG!...you're deaf. Yeah, he's such a responsible father.... ^_^

I like this celebration a lot because it's full of colours and fire is my favourite element and then I get reminded of the way a special British friend says "fi-ah" and so it's just so awesome. Everyone gets together and we have FUN. Yeah.

I wanted to write more but I guess I forgot. So instead of more, I'll enlighten you guys with a picture that I like a lot! Actually, that man is....like, the Persian Santa Clause? ... if that makes sense, even! Maybe I'll write about him in my next post! Yes, I do plan to write more blog posts because it's new year and I want my friends to get to know my culture~ Yay!

Tonight will be so much fun! *dances around* ^^^_______^^^

P.S : If only SalmonLovesTaBi comments on this I'll be so done with life because she's Persian! :D
