To go or not to go public?

During the IU-Eunhyuk drama, I started to think to myself what if my OTP is real and goes public. Whether it was caused by a blunder or caught by paparazzi, what will be the consequences? Is it good or bad for them?

Why do most idols prefer to keep their dating lives private? Well, except for Sunye who is dating a non-celebrity and is less pressured by all the attention. But even so, do note that James did get some hate tweets. If I were him, I’ll ignore a troll acting like 5-year-old but him being a missionary obviously cared and bothered to reply the troll. Look, the guy’s not even in showbiz but he purposely got a twitter account to support his girlfriend and he still had to tolerate hate tweets from fans. Let’s see from Sunye’s point of view. She’s happily in love and wants to share it with the world and yes, she gained support mostly but everywhere she goes on interviews, she may get a “Do you want to make a shout-out to your boyfriend? Or, how’s he like.” She’s fine with it but if it gets too often, it can overbearing, I feel. It’ll get 10times more overbearing if James is an idol and I tell you Sunye is sooo not going public if that is the case! Look at HaHa and Byul and the amount of privy intimate questions they are already getting… and they are not even idols!

Taecbin is a popular ship with International fans but honestly, in Korea, no one gives a sh*t about them(which is actually kind of a good thing). People are mostly interested in SM artists and SM fanbase is HUGE. Years ago, Taec got ‘scandalously popular’ because it’s not one girl but a few girls in SNSD got linked to him. So when you see a Jessica or Yoona article, you might just see his name pop up in the comments section. Hypothetically, let’s say he were to go public with Yub, will he be able to get rid of those old scandals? Maybe, a little, but you will still see comments like “Oh, you sure? Maybe he does the same to Sica…” or “He’s such a player, from SNSD to WG!” or “Why Yubin didn’t choose TOP?”etc. These comments will not end there!

Kpop fans are just this way. They only see idols in a light they want. They won’t be able to accept it even if the TRUTH is revealed. So there you go.. another reason why idols prefer to not go public. They won’t get all the congratulatory messages from everyone, and consequently cause a drop in their fanbase numbers.  Sohee once said she will never go public if she is in a relationship and recently there is Doojoon who said that too. Notice these 2 idols are part of a group who has at least one member publicly dating someone? Don’t you think Sohee and Doojoon said such because of what they have been observing of their fellow members?

A k-netizen quoted this “If you decide to go public with your relationship and end up marrying that person, it's a decision that deserves everyone's blessings... But if the relationship ends badly, then it's just another tag that will stay with you for the rest of your life. It's a career that depends on exposure, and being careful with how much you choose to expose is a big part of that.”

Can’t agree more?

But, yeah, a part of me can’t help but want my ship to go public because it might just shut up the other delusional ships somehow. But that’s just me. In all due respect, I would prefer my OTP to enjoy a comfortable relationship with no privy questions every time they appear in an interview.
