Flower power review

Firstly, I was really happy with the release. I woke up early to watch the video once it was uploaded but my enthusiasm didn’t last long. I was rather disappointed after I watched it for the first time. So, let’s break this song down and examine how well or otherwise it is.

Song (beat, melody, voice etc.)

This song was catchy and upbeat, which resulted in my addiction to it after listening to it for the first time. However, the starting was a bang instead of getting into the beat slowly and at the last bridge part, the melody doesn’t flow well. It’s upbeat and then suddenly they went quiet. That kind of killed the mood for me. I’m like all high with the chorus then suddenly Sunny’s quiet solo.  Ok so enough with the melody, now to the voice.

Firstly, Taeyeon . Taeyeon’s voice is always something I would die to hear for and it’s also one of the many things that I can be proud of as a SONE. However, throughout this song, Taeyeon hardly has an opportunity to flaunt her powerful yet sweet vocals so this is a disappointment for me. The other members couldn’t do so too because the song is too tuned. Now I wonder how they are going to sing it live. Lip sync, maybe?

So overall, out of 10, I would give this song a 6. That is, before we look into the lyrics.. :/

This part makes some sense in the first 2 lines but what’s with the 3rd and 4th line? Someone explain?

Still don’t understand. “The people I serve, Do you wanna be my lover” sounds a bit ..erm ..matured contents? So is this part trying to say human nature is not revealing your true self? Cause that’s what I understand from it. The 3rd and 4th line, well, at least I tried to understand it.

The lines makes sense on their own by combining them gives you a headache to understand it.

Chorus!!

Alright, so overall, it’s a 4 out of 10 for me. Hardly anything makes sense but I’m glad that the chorus makes sense cause that’s the most memorable part of a song and it’s important that it has meaning. With the translation now available, it’s hard for me to recommend this to my non k-pop friends who would laugh already when I tell them the title. The title, yes, it makes sense if you relate it to the chorus.

Dance

Honestly, I have always looked forward to SNSD’s choreography. I mean, who wouldn’t? They are the best at dancing! But I was disappointed at the dance for this song. It’s messy, disorganized and it has dance parts for those who are not singing. Although it’s bad, I like the idea of the standing-in-line-and-waving-your-hands dance at around 1.50 of the original mv. But it would have been more organized if only Jessica was different from the others instead of having Tiffany doing the different movement with Jessica who is singing that part. Also, the formation is good since they are standing to form a butterfly from bird’s eye view which relates to the lyrics of the chorus. However, I cannot understand why Yuri and Hyoyeon, the 2 best dancers of SNSD, are at the back for most of the chorus. You cannot even see Yuri’s face in some of those parts!

So for the dance, it’s a 6 out of 10. I’m sorry, fellow SONEs, I really don’t like the dance.

Video

It’s another boring video from SM artists. Yup, dancing in a room with good lighting. This time, they don’t even have a set with nice decorations like in Oh! Mv .

Ever since the video was out, I guess Yurisistables have been complaining about screentime. I’m a Yurisistable too and I think her screentime decreased a lot from the previous videos but there are members with lesser screentime than her. Members like Jessica and ..Jessica.  So it’s not a big problem for me if she doesn’t get lots of solo shots but it’s annoying to know that she is standing behind Sooyoung  and Seohyun in the 1st chorus and shoved to the far end in the 2nd chorus. I mean, you can’t even see Yuri’s face!!! But I must say that although she has little exposure to the camera, she still gives off the y and fierce vibe that suits the song. But seriously though, I thought “Flower power” was going to be a cute song when I first heard the title.

So video, 5 out of 10.
