APPEARANCE His overbearing height, alongside his lean body type, is the first thing people notice, but his softspoken voice + bright smile completely eliminates any fear or intimidation people might feel from his height when they first meet him. He is lanky af with his long arms + legs. Minus his signature glasses (which, on-camera, is actually fake frames + he wears contacts for his vision), his other charm point is his sharp square jawline.

 

FASHION STYLE Outside of his onstage performances, he's not the type to wear anything that would be considered wild, flashy or edgy. Instead, he tends to mix and match vintage + neat/smart casual styles together (think light/dark academia). Others occasionally how he dresses like a middle-aged man because of the way he tucks his typically collared shirt into his pants in order to hold it up, since he's too skinny.

Somehow, even in the practice room, he manages to look neat. His default look in the dorms is a white T-shirt and some baggy pants.

ELABORATION Nagi intially comes off as a smart, mature, gentlemanly type, but in reality he's just no thoughts, head empty. He's almost airheaded in a way, but this is how Nagi is able to keep himself sane after growing up with so much stress when he was younger. Perhaps as a result of burnout from his school years, nowadays as an adult he's a bit slow to process things in his head; he has never been the naturally smart type, but all his achievements up until now have been the result of pure hard work.

If it's the things he is truly passionate about, Nagi's the type to be able to dedicate a loooot of mental energy + analysis to perfect something. Unfortunately, this also means he is prone to pushing himself over the limit to the point of sacrificing his health; his body is not very strong to begin with, so he wears himself out very easily, whether physically or socially (he is introverted, as much as he is friendly with people). But no matter how tired he is, Nagi's the type who cannot stop thinking.

Sometimes, his own overthinking habit drives him to neurosis at night, creating an endless cycle of exhaustion. Which then leads to him coping by smiling dumbly most of the time. But at heart, even though Nagi looks like a rational/logical, heads-first kind of person (judging by how studious he is), he feels strong emotions within + is a sensitive boy.

His pessimistic side is hidden from the public, for he tries his best to be a moodmaker when people are around. There is a fear within him of being unloved; after all, after feeling like a disappointment + a bad son to his parents because his heart for entertainment won out making his parents proud, he wants the feeling of acceptance again. His hypocritical side comes out when he tells others to cheer up when he is discouraged himself. He often lies that he is fine; from Nagi's point of view, if the intention of the 'white lie' is to lessen the burden of others, then it's justifiable.

Chasing over the feeling of being loved by the masses, his social personality is extremely affectionate + caring. He isn't *loud* per se, but he is radiates a warm, nurturing energy that isn't abrasive, but is gentle. One can compare his personality to a puppy dog, or a mama. However, once he gets very comfy with people, his flamboyant wild side can start to show, and he is shown to have a humourous personality too. Overall, being an idol, even though the journey to get there hasn't been easy so far, but Nagi definitely feels a lot happier than ever on this path.

BACKGROUND The area of Japan where Nagi is from is famous for its powder snow. Growing up with both parents being doctors + being an only child, Nagi was raised in a highly academic environment and was privileged to be exposed to many interests/hobbies outside of school such as snow sports (skiing, snowboarding, etc.), ikebana/flower arranging, handmaking ramen, etc. However, it was never really music--or any performing arts for that matter. He has a close relationship with his grandparents since they were the ones who took care of his little self while his parents were away at work during his early childhood.

Having grown up smothered with attention, yet also having the pressure of two successful parents behind his back, Nagi felt a lot of pressure at school. He had always enjoyed whatever exposure to music he had back in school, and during middle school he started dabbling in J-pop idol culture. However, he kept his idol otaku side a secret from his family + many of his friends because everyone saw Nagi as a 'perfect role model student', a high achiever in academics + dedicated to studying.

Even though he did well in his studies + passed the exam to enter a top ranking science high school in Tokyo, his motivations to follow his parents' footsteps to become a doctor completely crashed. This didn't please his parents, who had deliberately transferred their workplaces + moved to Tokyo with him to support his education. He was at his most stressed during this point of his life to the point that Nagi thought he was going through depression, but it was the idol scene that saved him. As a form of escapism in order to cope, he started becoming more and more invested in the J-pop idol scene to the point that he had thoughts of becoming an idol himself, which shocked even he himself. He started spending more time picking up dances rather than studying, and finding a balancing act between his hobby + his studies was difficult without the sacrifice of sleep.

In late 2014, Nagi saw a major opportunity when he came across Marine Entertainment, a record company established in 2004 specialising in voice actor content from drama CDs to seiyuu music, scouting for members to the company's first ever 'virtual idol group'. Auditionees were required to be completely new to the entertainment industry, not associated with any label, and the anonymous nature of being in a virtual idol group greatly appealed Nagi. He ended up being one of the finalists for the auditions, and he alongside a bunch of other boys were trained in dance + vocals under Marine until 5 members were finalised for the debut of the new idol group by the end of 2015.

However, it was a crazy chaotic year for Nagi as he was dealing with his college entrance exam preparations on top of preparing for debut, all whilst keeping his double life a secret from his parents, who--luckily--were often too busy at work to keep close tabs on Nagi so they just assumed he was in cram school every night. Taking singing + dance lessons however, was extremely fun for Nagi, so the training period never felt too stressful at all; in fact, it was a great chance to get away from the stress of exam hell.

Yes, Nagi reckons that if it weren't for him multitasking with his training + his studies, he would've gotten a better result in terms of his college extrance exam. But he survived in the end, and although his academic performance didn't really *wow* his parents nor his schoolmates + he didn't get into his #1 preference uni, he wasn't too pressed anymore, now knowing at heart that his true passions lie in the entertainment industry. He officially moved into the dorms with the rest of the K&D members in 2016, whilst maintaining his parents' worries from a distance by saying that he is living on campus in uni.

As for how he got into K-entertainment in the first place, well, let's just say many of s are huge fans, which in turn, converted him too. The irony now is that out of all the K&D members, Nagi is the biggest Koreaboo in the entire group, and no one would expect that he would take that to another new level when Nagi manages to convince the big boss of Marine Entertainment to let him audition for PD101 this season.

RELATIONSHIPS Nagi is going on this show alone, for the rest of the K&D members were not comfortable exposing their full faces on TV for everyone in the world to see. However, s are supportive of him, and during Nagi's absence they simply just focused on making more variety content on Youtube instead.

As for his parents, ever since he moved out from home, they don't really contact much. But Nagi tries his best to message his parents to make sure they don't worry for him so much. Despite this, Nagi finds it difficult to communicate to his parents fully since he is still keeping a facade about what he's doing with his life; even when he was about to fly to Korea for PD101, he messaged his parents saying that he will be travelling to Korea for an exchange semester for uni and left it at that. The only relative Nagi has revealed about his secret idol career to is his grandmother a few years ago, a bit after the passing of his grandfather. Although she struggled to understand the concept of virtual idols, she fully supports whatever Nagi's doing.

STAGENAME Nagi (나기)

 

POSITION Vocals/dance

 

TRAINEE LIFE He, along with the rest of the K&D members, only trained for 10 months before official debut. He was actually never much of a singer prior to the auditions--he mainly got through because of his dance + personality. However, during his short time of intensive training, he was one of the members who improved tremendously in the vocals department, thus landing him in the position of being one of K&D's main vocalists.

 

IDOL LIFE He is well-loved as a virtual idol; fans particularly like him for the gap between his tall height + his cuteness. He is known for his 'polite' singing voice. Compared to the average idol, Nagi does get a little more freedom due to the anonymity of being a K&D member, and he is able to carry out a normal life outside his idol activities. In fact, not everyone who knows him in real life even knows about his idol career! Him stepping into PD101 will be the first time he would be officially outing himself to the public as a K&D member (although fans who have seen the group's live concerts before will not be surprised by his appearance)

 

LIFE ON PRODUCE 101 He's a bit overlooked as a trainee on P101 as his skills are not particularly *outstanding*, but he is known as the gentle bespectacled giant that everyone loves as a person + adds a fun personality in the show. His meek, clumsy image he initially comes onto the show with gets changed over time, and he is shown to be very bright and animated with his reactions + antics.

 

OPINIONS ON THE MENTORS 

Nagi is hella scared of Cheetah, periodt.

 

THE AUDITION In order to showcase his dance ability, he has decided to audition with Teen Top's Rocking, his outfit similar to C.A.P's in the video; a checkered red & black collared shirt underneath a black tee + black skinnies. He doesn't dance much during the verses that he sings, worried that his vocals would become unstable during it, but he breaks out into full power to the best of his ability during the dance sections. Compared to the badass coolness of the original performance, Nagi is a lot more smiley + cutesy. His glasses accidentally flies off towards the end of the song (3:06 min mark in the video when they snap their head to the side), and for a split second he has the most hilarious expression of shock on his face, garnering laughter from the audience, but he pushes on till the end of the song with a bigger grin on his face than he already has.

Judges would probably express concern for his glasses afterwards as he goes to pick them up, laughing embarrassedly. But Nagi reassures that his frames are fake, and he's wearing contacts.

SEAT NUMBERS & PREDICTED RANK He is slow to approach the chairs as he lets the other more competitive guys run to grab their spots first. Nagi does kinda kinda eye at the 7-15 and 16-26 rows but eventually he hesitates and moves to the end of the 27-38 row (38th spot).

As for the predicted rank, Nagi says that A and B are way too good for him, so he wants to be C at least. He shivers at the thought of getting the X sticker.

Knight & Day is a 2D/3D J-pop idol boyband, debuted in Oct 2015. Their concept, unique to J-pop at the time, is "flipping between 2D (become 'shining knight-like idols' who will protect their fans from the sad boredom + loneliness of everyday life) and 3D (their normal 'day' selves)", and their MVs often jump between dimensions (not depicted in their twin group). Their real faces are usually kept hidden minus their live concerts, which fans get the special privilege to see the members face-to-face.
